FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: Back on time this week, hopefully that's a permanent change.

Wow, the report is out early this week! Thanks, as always, for your work on this, enilria!

AS' hacking away at the former VX route network continues. So much for synergies and offering consumers a better competitor to the Big 4 that they promised with the merger.

Encouraging to see AA with so many March adds. Although, as I think I posted in last week's thread, with many schools cancelling Spring Break, I'm not sure how much of that demand will still exist this year.

This is when it is supposed to be out, but it's been late upstream from me
:)
I think AS accomplished nothing with the VX buy except community service for the industry of eliminating competition. If they really bought it to stop B6 from growing I think that failed pretty miserably as AS is ceding the transcons bit by bit and B6 is taking them.

As always, thanks for all the effort to put this out each week. The AS transcon cuts are not surprising and seem to suggest a potential for more and a realignment of the strategy once AS enters OW. I can see them axe LAX and SFO out of JFK completely down the road, but maintain and grow SEA, PDX, and the recently announced SAN route which would better complement AA's offering. SJC-EWR always seemed like an odd-ball route for AS.

On the contrary, I had really expected AS (and it looked like they were going to, for a while) to build up SJC at a similar level to SAN at one point. I expected EWR would have been followed by BOS/WAS/MCO but I guess AS had other plans.

SJC-EWR did okay, not great before Covid. It was almost all business driven demand though. The route performed a bit better once UA left. A route with no leisure demand isn’t going to work anytime in the near future.

I thought I'd point out that although these 2 routes indicate a decrease in frequency, it is because both routes are upgraded to mainline service; from 2 EMJs/day to 1 739 in one case and to an A320 in the other. In other words, it's not all reductions in service and cutting this and that. I feel that we are just starting to see some positive indications at last!

I have no idea about other routes in AS's network but I'm sure there are many similar cases.

Also, keep in mind that most of the fractional numbers shown for AS in March are due to the March schedule being effective on the 18th of the month this year.

Thank you Enilria for all the effort you put in to keeping this great thread coming to us week after week. It is very much appreciated!

Wow, this looked like a very impressive step up in capacity for AA, middling for DL and a step back for UA.

As COVID death rates structurally decline in the USA (hopefully), we may be on the brink of a major capacity boost in the US. My guess is international stuff only begins to recover deep into July, with major recovery happening by October.

AS isn’t exiting JFKLAX/SFO. They don’t have antitrust and that would only raise suspicions. They are in fact already adding JFKSAN. On their earnings call they even mentioned how the lack of a high-CASM lie flat plane is to their advantage right now on these routes, which is absolutely true. JFKLAX is essentially a leisure market this summer.

Really strong (relatively) March for PHX/AZA. I assume combining international travel restrictions with Spring Break bodes well for Arizona, since the states pretty well opened up. Really surprised to see YEG-PHX on WS back at 1.4 for March, I assume that will be chopped back a bit.

Pre-COVID, Allegiant was operating about 12X per week (about 1.7).

Southwest is entering the route and there will be on-going COVID impacts, but it looks like Allegiant for now is not backing down.

PHX isn't just targeted at local demand - demand for the entire Mountain West is up as folks seek travel to the National Parks and "outdoorsy" areas.

YEG-PHX I would expect to drop back down to .4x or whatever they had been running YYC at - WS hasn't been updating their PHX transborder schedule until about 30 days before each month.

It's interesting they haven't moved to collapse JFK. I assume the rivalry with B6 is big time at play and a reluctance to admit that the VX purchase with the goal to stave off B6 in transcon has completely failed.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but the COVID restrictions on the NY area are pretty tough. Without COVID it might be very different.

I think the cuts AS has done in SAN recently have fairly little to do with SAN and a lot to do with intra-State Cali flying doing poorly in the COVID world and AS failing in non-SEA transcon post-VX merger.

I was just looking at TSA today, traffic is increasing a lot, but it tracks normal seasonality so we are still at about the same point from a year ago.

Looks like it still begins on March 27 but goes down to 2x weekly (Friday/Saturday from SEA, Sunday/Monday from PVG) with a stopover in ICN for April and then goes nonstop again on May 8, daily. It also looks to go from 787-8 to 772.

I think LAX-ORD on AS will be back at some point. VX struggled with the route and AS struggled with the route, there was no need to hold onto it during this crisis. Even today on a Tuesday in the depths of the pandemic and shoulder season, UA is flying it 3x B753, AA is flying it 3x (1xB738, 1xB772, 1xA321), and NK is flying it 1x A320. In addition WN is flying LAX-MDW 3x. There's just no room for a fourth/fifth player in this environment.

3x/daily in March? That practically qualifies as hourly shuttle service on G4.

The weird thing is that according to their website they're $1100+ roundtrip. That seems a bit excessive. Maybe that's enough to guarantee a profit if they get one booking. I know some commuter airlines in Africa are essentially charging the breakeven cost to go - if they get one pax, they ask the pax to pay the rest of what they need to break even or they don't go. I wonder if that's the same arrangement here. As far as I can tell none of these flights have operated in the past week.

Also, I wonder if they're using their King Air, their Mojave, or their Navajo (the Navajo was used when they briefly flew AVP-PIT in 2018), although they didn't have their King Air then. Also it looks like the B1900C Public Charters owns is going to end up on this certificate. It ferried CAK-AVP in October after flying MDW-MBL under the Ultimate Air Shuttle certificate this fall before the route was taken over by Cape Air.

I did more research and they applied for the authority to operate the ACY flight with their Mojave (their Commuter authority had been revoked after being dormant for over a year after they stopped flying PIT-AVP. Their King Air and Navajo are essentially dormant (Navajo last flew FRG-AVP in December 2019 and the King Air hasn't flown since October 10). However, The Mojave has not been to either ACY or BWI any time recently. It has done a lot of training flights and a few charters to ABE, HEF, and several charters this month to HGR, but nothing to ACY or BWI..

SJC to EWR is, as others have pointed out, overwhelmingly a business route, and business demand is all but dead. Generally, NYC to SJC has never really worked. it has been tried, stopped and re-started a number of times. It's a very thin route.

AA removing SEA-PVG for April? Does this delay it?

There is no need in AA making the same mistake both DL and UA made by attempting to fly to PVG nonstop. It is still a nightmare scenario where at least in UA cases it was taking 4-5 additional hours after the flight arrived in PVG for the crews to be tested receive those results be escorted to there hotels. As if getting to the hotel wasn't nightmarish enough then there were the constant disruptions to their sleep as the hotel served meals on their schedule, their terms, which didn't mesh well with the crews trying to sleep.

It's best AA launch SEA-PVG with a stopover in ICN and avoid that situation altogether.

The OAG says "PA2". Probably the Navajo as primary and the Mojave as backup.

I was always skeptical how low cost F9 could make high cost EWR work.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but the COVID restrictions on the NY area are pretty tough. Without COVID it might be very different.

I agree with you @Enliria, re JFK. I think AS can make SEA, PDX, and SAN work, essentially doing that flying fro AA (AA would likely never start JFK-PDX and has suspended SEA and SAN a while back for a number of reasons). AS does not offer a compelling product on LAX/SFO where competition is fierce and all of the players (B6, DL, AA, UA soon) offer an elevated product in the premium cabin that AS cannot compete with, what is essentially standard domestic first.

Crazy for sure. I think their only other city pair that has seen frequencies like this is LAS-FAT. I believe in years past they may have had 3 or 4 daily.

AS has always said that while the transcons were a nice perk and had some good revenue from the merger, the purpose for the VX merger was to gain real-estate in LAX, SFO and JFK, not the specific routes. Many people keep saying that VX was great and all which they were a hip airline and had some neat touches, in reality they were barely profitable and in 10 years didn't really keep innovating with their onboard product. The value of the company was the people and the real-estate (including slots) and that the routes and aircraft were basically zero value because either not profitable or leased in the case of the aircraft.

AS hasn't argued their first class cabin competes with B6's mint, UA/AA/DL's first/business class cabins, they weren't going for that market and it appears to be good move at the moment not to invest in the more expensive first class cabin.

I suspect because of CASM all or most of the transcons are loosing money with little to no business travel currently, probably good idea to trim the worst performing transcons.

The Frontier cuts seem pretty extensive. Any ideas as to what's provoking them?

They could bring back Tyler, Longview and Wichita Falls and add Texarkana,

I don't see any of those being high priorities.

My post was entirely related to the AS buildup of SJC and how starting the route signaled to me that they intended a couple of years back to make it a mini-SAN...

Even before Covid, I gave up an AS an SAN due to their launching and cancelling routes constantly. I get that Covid made things worse but it’s hard to stay loyal to AS if you are San Diego based, as much as I would love to.

AS has been doing the same thing with SJC, even before COVID.

TUS had come and gone twice. SNA and BUR come and gone. RNO come and gone. AUS started, cut, and back again. Same with SJD and PVR. JFK was short lived. Now EWR gone at least for now. GEG was added and cut; I think it’s back again. EUG didn’t last long. Looks like RDM may be cut already. DAL was short-lived. This is at least the third time they’ve started SJC-PSP. I hope SJC-MSO sticks, but I’ll believe it when I see it. They even did SJC-SMF as a triangle with BOI and advertised it, IIRC.

All valid points. Not sure AS was looking at JFK specifically as a major source of assets when they decided to buy VX although VX did have LAX/SFO/LAS and a weekly PSP. I think AS will retain a presence at JFK, but it will shift dramatically in terms of focus.

Well any other TX city that wants to pay for UA service, like SJT, probably could get it.

F9 finally giving up on a BOI resumption . I hope, they are a non-factor there it seems.

AA extending DAB-PHL not long after extending DAB-DFW is HUGE.

Not that I necessarily doubt it because they keep pushing it back, but in a quick Google search I didn't see anything about them giving up for this year. Can you link to a source?

SJC-EWR always seemed like an odd-ball route for AS.

It's interesting they haven't moved to collapse JFK. I assume the rivalry with B6 is big time at play and a reluctance to admit that the VX purchase with the goal to stave off B6 in transcon has completely failed.

I was always skeptical how low cost F9 could make high cost EWR work.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but the COVID restrictions on the NY area are pretty tough. Without COVID it might be very different.

I think the cuts AS has done in SAN recently have fairly little to do with SAN and a lot to do with intra-State Cali flying doing poorly in the COVID world and AS failing in non-SEA transcon post-VX merger.

I was just looking at TSA today, traffic is increasing a lot, but it tracks normal seasonality so we are still at about the same point from a year ago.

It doesn't seem to be helping them in all these dropped transcons, but it would not be the first time a CEO "perfumed the pig" in a quarterly call.

I think SAN is more of a challenge because the geography means no connections to speak of, but generally agree. It's the pre-merger strengths.

The other thing is that VX would have almost certainly merged with someone. AS was not only in the best position to do so at the time, but by doing so prevented B6 from growing in key west coast markets. B6 would have a lot more LAX real estate right now if AS hadn't purchased them. The current problem AS has is that they're the odd airline out anywhere but the Pacific Northwest. It will be interesting to see how they do once they exit COVID.

DC took such a hard hit during Covid and at least in the case of IAD, it just gets worse and worse

Actually NK is operating around 65% of it pre covid flight schedule out of DTW. The flights that are not operating are the non leisure destinations. So I'd say the demand from Southeast Michigan to Florida is pretty strong and it's good to see G4 stepping up and filling the void. I am sure now that G4 is the number one carrier at both FNT and GRR.
