FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I did expect WN to reduce frequencies on its initial ORD routes with demand to BNA, DAL/DFW, DEN, and PHX from Chicago being significantly lower than was the case prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (not only on WN but also on ORD-BNA/DFW/DEN/PHX on other airlines) and with WN still having a significant amount of nonstop service to DAL, DEN, and PHX out of MDW.

WN might also be planning on adding a few more nonstop routes out of ORD such as ORD-ATL/HOU/LAS with (a) ATL, HOU, and LAS being top destinations traveled to from Chicago on WN, (b) ATL, HOU, and LAS being hubs for WN, and (c) connecting opportunities available at ATL, HOU, and LAS on WN. I had also mentioned that HOU (Houston Hobby) is the largest U.S. airport by number of annual passengers without any nonstop service out of ORD, even though IAH (Houston Intercontinental) already has nonstop service out of ORD on AA, UA, and NK.

Thanks for all your hard work again.

So VN is going to ANC? That's an odd one...

DL seems to have high hopes for a rebound in April. Lots of NYC additions and additional flights planned. LGA-ATL especially.

Interesting. Not great news for FSM that AA is going that far out and pulling flights, especially if you assume that DL isn't returning on their 2x ATL-FSM.

DL basically extended their March schedule through April 11th hence the appearance of partial month changes in April.

The recent iteration of DL MIA hub was nothing but overheated a.net fantasy, promoted by partisans who can't do network math, or by people eager to see it 'fail'.

Forty-one flights by AA/DL/UA/WN to a domestic destination does not a hub make.

With this expanded network, Delta will offer 41 daily non-stop options between 10 U.S. airports and Miami...

No reference to a DL MIA hub, nor even MIA as a focus city, in this pre-covid press release Jan. '20. https://news.delta.com/delta-bolsters-m ... ship-latam

Yep...DL basically extended its March schedule through the week after Easter in April and hasn't trimmed/adjusted the full month of April yet.
Probably due in part to there being a longer lead time booking curve for inelastic Easter / Spring break related travel.

Cross-posting from the Ohio thread- CMH-LAX has now been dropped by both AA and DL, which is disappointing, but I can't believe it'll stay that way once the world returns to "normal". That route was 2x AA/1x DL daily in 2019. Maybe AA returns to the route via a codeshare with B6 if the latter comes to town.

Perhaps encouragingly, CMH-SLC resumes in April, which I figured would be the route to go if they dropped one of their western routes.

CVG-PHX gone on Delta is not terribly surprising. AA has been running pretty good frequency on it since the Fall and then you have Allegiant catching low yields. A tough market nowadays

NK does a big March and April retreat. That smells like lower than expected bookings to me. NK is smart if the booking are not there I don't think things will improve or change that much so soon. The spring break people who want to travel will be a set number , we all know there will be a boost but it's not gonna be as much as the airlines has hoped and temporary . Expect a lul after spring break. People will have gotten their travel in who "needed it" and will see people holding out for summer

Perhaps, or they are just doing poorly. These flights were filed recently, so it is not as if they didn't know COVID was happening when they were set.

Thanks, as always for your work on this.

There was some discussion over in the Chicago thread about WN having some potential difficulty with gating at Terminal 5. Here is the revised departure schedule:

0600 DEN
0630 BWI
0700 BNA
0840 DAL
0915 DEN
1025 PHX
1125 BWI
1215 DAL
1245 DEN
1345 DEN
1600 BNA
1740 BWI
1815 DAL
1945 BNA
2040 DEN

After 1300, this comfortably fits into a single gate and the whole thing fits into two gates all day without any trouble. That doesn't answer your question conclusively, of course, but it suggests there might be something to the gate issue. FWIW, close-in bookings (next week) to PHX look very strong and the other cities seem about average for pandemic bookings.

The operation was brought up in Delta and LATAM’s ATI filing. The public version which is redacted but included many new routes DL plans to add under approval. MIAMCO/TPA will ultimately launch as the plans become more clear and if the ATI is approved.

The interesting part to me is that the routes are scheduled to start next Monday Feb 14. They chose to make the frequency trims before the service started.

Thanks as always for sharing this, enilria!

Note for everybody on the DL changes for April. It looks like they have generally pushed the reduced March schedule through 4/11 and the rest of the month is the full "placeholder" schedule.

Because of that April looks like DL is bringing back a bunch of suspended routes but at a lower-than-traditional frequency. But what you're seeing is generally the average between "0" flights for the first 11 days of April and "normal" number of flights in the placeholder schedule for the rest of the month. A similar thing with many other reduced-frequency routes seeing an apparent bump up in April when it is simply an average of 11 days of reduced schedule and 19 days of the placeholder.

Delta seems to have been more of a full-month-at-a-time, but with Easter being 4/4 pushing the March schedule through 4/11 covers most of the spring break travel. They might well not be comfortable guessing the rest of April yet as demand forecasts (especially leisure) probably shift daily given the vaccine and improving weather. Maybe some of the suspended markets do return in mid April, but at this point that's not what they've done.

In the Chicago thread the person who I think is the most familiar and up to date on what is going on not only at terminal 5 but ORD overall @jrwc56 stated this isn't a gate availability issue. I tend to believe jrwc56 because looking at ORD's international arrivals and departures there should be plenty of gates even with the construction at terminal 5 for Southwest to fly their original schedule. There is something else at play here and I think it is either A) the demand WN hoped for hasn't materialized; or B) WN's ORD flights are not impacting AA and UA as much as some people on this site originally hoped for when the WN announced ORD service, instead ORD could be impacting WN's own MDW operation by diverting much needed O&D traffic from MDW to ORD.

The fact that WN (the strongest domestic carrier) is reducing frequency on every route out of ORD and some of those routes are reduced through JUL or even AUG is telling in and of itself.

Availability isn't the issue so much as moving around, which it sounded like was a possibility at least with the original schedule. Note the comments that they could not guarantee a stable gate assignment.

DL typically has only run CVG-PHX Feb-April (ish) overlapping with spring training. With limited, and possibly no fans (in addition to the possible change in the baseball schedule) its not to surprising that this was cut for the year.

I'm actually somewhat surprised AA is keeping it 6x weekly through April. Must be doing okay for them.

There's no issues with WN and gating at T5. WN was able to access T5 working around a fully gated Summer 2020 season. So whatever the reason the reduction, it wasn't this.

The DL updates to the April schedule are deceptive as they only go through April 11th (oops, I see a couple people already mentioned this). They will positively make updates/cutbacks to the rest of April schedule at a later date. I can guarantee they will not be going from 8x daily on LGA-ATL on April 11th to 16x daily on April 12th.

There's no issues with WN and gating at T5. WN was able to access T5 working around a fully gated Summer 2020 season. So whatever the reason the reduction, it wasn't this.

I understand that WN was told that they could not be guaranteed a stable gate assignment in T5. What's the practical impact of that statement? Will WN actually be moved around day-to-day or within days?

DL closing down the planned routes out of MIA might have something to do with YX closing their crew base. The majority of those routes were set to be operated by YX, but their crew base in MIA closes April 1st, with all operations set to end in the few months after. Would be very difficult to route aircraft in/out of MIA for DL/YX.

Surprised this ones getting cut, Floridas the one place that actually has demand right now. They did this with RSW/TPA a few months back and then both got reloaded at 2-3 daily so might be something that gets changed later.

I was also surprised. A little bit of backing off on B6 at JFK and BOS. Not sure why. Maybe the AA deal has changed their attitude?

No airline has a guaranteed gate assignment at ORD's terminal 5, all gates at terminal 5 are common use gates. The reduction in WN frequencies at ORD has nothing to do with gate availability, gate space or guaranteed gate assignments.

I certainly understand your vested interest in WN's failure at ORD (and the failure of any carrier whose name does not rhyme with . . . Punited) but you are conflating the distinct concepts of common use and predictability in assignments. Across the country, carriers use common use gates day in and day out with little practical difference between common use gates and leased gates. Common use can - but doesn't have to - mean that gate assignments change a lot. Look how at T5, AA and UA tend to stick to their respective wings.

I have no vested interest but WN service cutbacks before they start shows the demand is not as expected. I am not are why they think it will be such a big hit. Prices are nothing special and flights are already robust on other carriers.

ABQ maybe but TUS isn't know as a heavy tourism destination and the problem with the previous flight was more people were still willing to choose to connect through PHX/DFW and the non-stop pricing power didn't exist.

Might just be the fact that PBI isn't the strongest of the FL demand points right now so the aircraft time could be getting reallocated to another to be announced route/frequency.

Demand from BOS and NYC is still pretty low even to FL.

Wow this is a touchy subject for a certain someone.

At no point did I every say or imply that I have a vested interest in WN's failure at ORD. Secondly please provide one shred of evidence to back up your assertion that I have a vested interest in the failure of any carrier. Enough of my posts are archived on this cite so I encourage you by all means search and fine one time where I've advocated, stated, hope for or implied I wanted a carrier not named United to fail.

Don't get all bent out of shape simply because WN is reducing frequency out of ORD before they even launch, heck look at United, our JFK re-launch crashed and burned. Do you think that is what I wanted to see happen? United had to delay our return to JFK because of a lack of demand and there is a good chance it could be delayed yet again. I didn't like the news when United announced it but I didn't attack other people who posted they could see this coming from a million miles away. I know this isn't what you expected but the more you try to make this about not having guaranteed gates the more ridiculous your argument becomes. Just accept the fact WN has trimmed their schedule either do to a lack of demand or because ORD is negatively impacting O&D numbers to these destinations at MDW and just move on. Lashing out at people in anger and making false statements because you don't like the news isn't productive at all.

I’d be glad to look at whatever evidence you have that WN doesn’t like the demand it’s seeing ex-ORD. As I mentioned upthread, close-in bookings look good but not great on most O&D city pairs. What I do know is that WN hasn’t gotten 100 percent positive news on T5 gating, but I don’t know and won’t speculate on whether the news I’d characterize as 80 percent positive is acceptable.

As far as personal interest, good service on BNA-ORD would help me immensely personally. The MDW rental car experience isn’t good so I’ll probably move all of my suburbs travel - much of which is to points closer to ORD - to ORD. T5 really isn’t competitive for trips to the City.

SMX HAS NOT BEEN CUT! It hasn't started yet and is now pushed back to Sep 30, 2021. SMX was supposed to restart last year in June but has been pushed back several times. The airport had lots of service during the prop era but lost all service several years ago (except for Allegiant). UA*, AA*, and DL* all had dozens of flights to LAX and UA* also went to SFO in the 80's and 90's. Sounds like the city is trying very hard to bring something back.

TUS/ABQ have historically struggled with flights to East Coast hubs, with the exception of the longstanding DL ATL flight from both cities. B6 tried TUS-JFK, and CO tried TUS-EWR several times. AA attempted JFK-TUS as well a couple of years ago as well.

From ABQ, UA used to do IAD-ABQ, WN used to do Florida flights during their peak at ABQ, and CO ran both EWR/CLE from ABQ at one point.

US tried TUS-CLT immediately after the merger and it didn't work, and AA brought it back a couple of years ago as well, almost the same time they introduced ABQ-CLT. One would think that they would work, especially given AA's strength in the TUS market. I was told that loads were exceptional but the yields weren't that stellar.

CLT-SJC also had a similar issue. The loads were great, and the flight was quickly upgauged to an A321 from an A319 the follow season (which was extended) but the flight never returned.

I see CLT-SJC coming back before ABQ or TUS. COS is another route that I think would make sense ex CLT.

I’m not set on anything. WN wanted gate certainty. WN didn’t get that. Again, access =/= certainty. Whether that is enough for a schedule change I don’t know.

Interesting. Not great news for FSM that AA is going that far out and pulling flights, especially if you assume that DL isn't returning on their 2x ATL-FSM.

AA.com is still showing 4 daily DFW-FSM in Aug and Oct. In fact its the same schedule every day from April thru Oct, two Envoy and two SkyWest flights. Those anomalies in the AA schedule reporting to the OAG are still haunting us! And in this case with no actual change in the schedule, we may never figure out what's causing the problem.

Enilria--I've tried real hard to narrow down what's causing this problem with AA but I'm at a loss.

Thanks for the explanation and makes sense. YWG on DL won’t be returning before May at the earliest due to the new border restrictions. Also, AC announced 17 more route cuts today. The transborder ones aren’t reflected here yet and will show up next week, including the suspension of all LGA ops.

This isnt the first time they’ve pulled the plus on PBI-BOS and JFK. They did a few years back when B6 came to town, and then eventually returned.

As for PBI, it has been an interesting season. Of all the B6 adds to Florida from PHL, PBI has been the weakest, even with AA using 175’s and F9 not flying it. The only thing I can think of is that the seasonal folks with houses never left last year when Covid hit, and that the winter weekenders who regularly do Thursday night down - Monday morning up have stayed put as well.

The only carrier that had a predictable gate was BA with the A380. Outside of that, even today every carrier understands (some reluctantly) the concept it's what's best for the building, not what's best for any one airline. They understood and acknowledged this coming in especially with construction now in full swing. So again, their reduction had zero to do with the issue of gating. Every carrier that proposes new services is told this, you have access to a gate, but not a specific gate. EL AL even understood this concept and their security demands are through the roof.

I get the point you're trying to make, but it's wrong. The success of T5, based on how many airlines operated in there pre covid was being built upon being as fluid and flexible to limit impacts and delays, and to maximize the use of the facility.
