Official: LAS to be renamed for Harry Reid

Thu Feb 18, 2021 11:03 am

Seems Clark County Commission has taken the final (and unanimous) vote on renaming McCarran Int'l airport to "Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport"

https://onemileatatime.com/las-vegas-ai ... arry-reid/
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

What?

Not to the much more appropriate "Las Vegas Siegfried & Roy International Airport"?

I can understand wanting to lose the Mccarran name due to the racist and anti sematic background, but honestly, they should have gone for a neutral name like Las Vegas International.

Harry has done a lot for Las Vegas and Nevada, but something neutral would be better.

Why? And neutral is not neutral to everyone. Someone’s always going to have an issue with something.

Yeah, until someone find something about dear Harry Reid not fashionable with the values at that time, I am afraid Las Vegas may have to change the name of the airport again.

I'm all for the renaming of LAS given McCarran's racism and anti-semitism, but it would be smarter IMHO not to name airports or other places used by many for politicians. Yes Harry Reid transformed NV on the political map etc...etc...but would be smarter to stick to something neutral, or just call it Las Vegas International Airport, which is what it is after all.

It will only be Las Vegas Airport for 99% of the people

very much not a fan of harry reid. Also not a fan of renaming airports in general. But like others have said. 99% will just call it las vegas airport. As time rolls on most won't even know who Harry Reid is in the first place.

Naming an airport after a person is always a bad idea. You'll never know who will end up having skeletons in their closet years later. Muhammad Ali impregnated a 16 year old while 32 and married himself, and a town he barely even lived still named their airport after him.

Help me understand who could get their panties in a knot about “Las Vegas International”?

The U.S. Post Office had a good rule (it ended about ten years ago): Nobody would be put on a stamp until ten years (later five) after their death. That gave people a chance to consider the entirety of the life.

It's still Washington National for me, and Houston Intercontinental.

Ted Stevens Convicted Felon Anchorage International Airport wouldn't really roll off the tongue. (He was exonerated months later, fairly noted.)

I beg to differ. Locally, McCarran is widely known as just that, "McCarran." Further, while my evidence is mostly anecdotal, I would argue that that some airports have a significant amount of people that use particular airport's (nick)names, even outside of the local area. For instance: "Sky Harbor," "O'Hare," "JFK," "John Wayne," etc.

That being said, I'm not convinced "Harry Reid," will garner the same usage as "McCarran." I also think a name that does not refer to a person would probably have been a better route to go with.

That is true. My friends in Austin will call the Airport "Bergstrom" as opposed to just "the airport". Many people in Atlanta will call the airport "Hartsfield" Of course in Houston we refer to the airports as "Hobby" and "Bush" because we have two of them but even in places with just one they will call them by the name.

If you look as far as Wikipedia, you will find plenty in Harry Reid's resume that is less than stellar.

Best not to name airports after people.

This is patently false. Off the top of my head...

BOS = Logan Airport to the locals
BDL = Bradley to the locals
AUS = Bergstrom to the locals
ATL = Hartsfield to the locals
SNA = John Wayne Airport to the locals
STL = Lambert Field to the locals

I'm sure there are many more but you get the point.

Best to avoid naming any piece of public infrastructure after anyone if possible.

This is incredibly stupid by LAS. Just keep it generic and name it Las Vegas International Airport.

Does anybody call SJC "Mineta"? Or LIT "Clinton"? Better to compare more "recent" airport renamings than the examples you listed, which have gone by those names for decades.

It is interesting.

Regan and National go hand in hand to me.

Hartsfield never gets called Jackson

Intercontinental still trumps George Bush

Little Rock is never referred to as Clinton

Not going to get political here, but I'm generally against naming airports for anyone who is still living. More like JFK and not IAH, now LAS.

Might as well name it after a local stripper or prostitute, they have more character and integrity than Reid does, and will be remembered longer.

No one remembers who Fiorello La Guardia was.

I mean, perhaps speak for yourself? Mayor La Guardia's pretty well remembered here, for better or for worse.

The fact of the matter is that locals, no matter the city, rarely refer to their airports as [CITY NAME] Airport. It's either noted by the airport name, a former name, or even the neighborhood name (more common in Europe, I suppose). There's no one-size-fits-all approach, so YMMV. Not worth fighting over ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Those are names with longer historical timeframes. Even out-of-towners call Logan Logan. But does anyone refer to BWI as Thurgood Marshall, or Newark as Newark Liberty? I propose the latter as the stupidest most worthless name change ever.

Bet to differ. I live in the Atlanta area and most people calls it "A T L airport" (naming each letter); and those who work at the airport say they work at "midfield", "international terminal" or "domestic terminal", and it's understood what you're referring to.
If people mention the name Hartsfield for the airport, then they tend to call it Hartsfield-Jackson.

It's case by case not sure why there's an argument. For instance, in my old back yard, YYZ is called "Pearson" by pretty much everyone. However, few call YUL "Trudeau" as it was called Dorval forever. YOW is usually "YOW" or "The airport" the "John A McDonald" never really stuck. GVA is GVA, but ZRH is definitely Kloten.

No, I know the airport as McCarran, and everyone I know calls it McCarran. Now we'll probably start calling it Reid, but could take a while to get used to.

As many others have pointed out, LGA is LaGuardia, JFK is Kennedy, and on and on, and yes we still know who Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was.
