Inverness Airport - Draft Master Plan 2020

Thu Feb 18, 2021 3:35 pm

HIAL have released Inverness Airport's draft master plan 2020 for public viewing and feedback here:

https://www.invernessairport.co.uk/wp-c ... ersion.pdf

Interestingly they have an option (which is also the most expensive) to move the current INV terminal to the railway line beside the new Dalcross railway station that is due to be built:

Very interesting.

Whilst the most costly, Option 4 would provide the opportunity to design an energy efficient, carbon negative / positive building. There should be enough room between the railway line and the centreline to design to Code 4E standards, which will more than suffice. I expect the largest pax type you'd be designing for is a 767-300ER or 787-8, and even then only as VIP / HoS transport.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum (the ruler of Dubai) owns a massive estate in the Highland's, I'm sure if the runway could handle it, he'd fly in on one of his 747s :D

Joking aside, I would hope that HIAL would look at the bigger picture and move the terminal by the new railway station. The current terminal (only built in 1999!) could be used without any major disruption as the new terminal was built. Ultimately it will come down to the decision of the Scottish Government as owners of HIAL as to what direction the airport redevelopment goes in.

I have to wonder how many people want to fly to Inverness.

It is somewhat remote from the main population centres.

I wonder if they do go for option 4 and build a new terminal in the south of the field, will they sell off all the land where the current terminal is and in fact the land where the diagonal runways are placed? Don't really need them.... airports, if built from scratch, could be very long and thin but as a lot of UK airports are old RAF bases where they have the 3 runways in a triangle layout, there is a lot of unused/unnecessary land. If you get me...

What would be wrong with building a modest railway station and running a shuttle bus between station and terminal whose schedule matches the trains ?
Building a new terminal sounds very expensive...
