FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It's interesting to see B6 go to the 'legacy standard' of a rolling 330-day schedule but I'm not going to have much faith they will really operate anything like 100% of those routes and frequencies in September. The April frequencies loaded this week for F9 and DL - they seem a lot more likely to be flown.

The reason they had a 180 day schedule (or whatever it was) was to reduce reaccomodation costs by publishing the mostly "final" schedule. They are now realizing that with COVID there is no such thing as a final schedule, so the trade off changed. I would not be surprised if they switch back in a couple of years.

Interesting how UA can just discontinue ORD-OGS. OGS is an EAS city and the contract says they must operate flights to both cities. I knew they had an exemption to stop the OGS-ORD segment during the first round of fares funding, but I don’t know about now.

I even found someone who did a triP report about going from IAD to ORD with a connection in OGS...

Pretty cool that someone decided to connect in a small city like that

Don't know what's happening here. The EAS expired Jan 31 and nothing has been said about a replacement. Advanced is still serving SVC but will only book flights thru Mar 13.

Didn't think this would work with only one per day. I can't see the state of Wyoming giving up on CYS, maybe we'll get AA* back to DFW once the pandemic and its variants ease up some.

Is this route going year-round now, or are they just flying it for the holiday season?

Wow, LATAM is really cutting a lot on its US network. Sad to see them cut so much, how many of these are temporary COVID related and how many are just gone?

Probably another exemption. G4 recently pulled out of OGS too.

BW has been delaying canceling its flights for as long as it possibly can so as to delay offering refunds. It’s not that they plan to fly anything in March, it’s that they haven’t zeroed out the month fully yet.

The new 3yr contract starting in April allows for the option of 2xdaily to IAD instead. They want the max. Florida connections, evidently.

well, they can reaccomodate on AA now.

True, but that policy predated the war against non-alliance interline agreements.

I didn’t look, but assumed the flight is back in July so I didn’t consider it cancelled fully yet. The fact it is cancelled till July is odd.

I wouldn’t put much credibility in future schedules. It’s just hope.

I don’t know if this is related, but coupling the Covid entry restrictions to the USA in terms of testing with the new outright Canada travel ban to leisure spots, I wonder how much new hurt that is on Latin?

Is this route going year-round now, or are they just flying it for the holiday season?

I think JetBlue is putting out a very optimistic BOS scheduling to try to see where the demand is. Maybe they are hoping AA codeshare will give them more customers to work with.

Surprising discovery. If this is a new sked extension, why am I not seeing any service between JFK and SAN listed? The 3 other SAN-markets all are there and look very nicely-served (especially BOS with 4x daily!) but no more service to JFK? And I don't see the route reappearing on the AA skeds either...

B6 scared off by AS's entry into the market?!

Nah, IDK why some of the B6 markets were excluded. FLL-PDX isn't on here either, but it's still operating 2x weekly within their schedule extension.

I think you're right. Looking at the entire BOS schedule extension listed here, this does seem very optimistic. They're obviously not going to be flying 2x daily BOS-PDX (let alone 1x daily) in May through October. 4x daily BOS-SAN seems very over-the-top as well.

They are at 3x daily for those month. All on mint. What they will operate is a different story. There is no way B6 will trim schedule right now since they need all the bookings they can get.

JFK-SNA is a good addition! They have too many planes sitting around. This is a market that lost alot of seats to the northeast when JetBlue left long beach-jfk/Bos. Alot of oc people who don't want it shlep to lax. I think this was a really good move by AA. It doesnt have to be permanent but a good route for a while. International is gonna be a long time away so they have the capacity for a premium seat product.

A smart pass rider knew all of the small town regional connections. A great backup plan for when you couldn’t get on the trunk routes. There even used to be competitions to see who could get from coast to coast the fastest, without ever using a jet.

In the days of Allegheny Commuter, Comair/ASA/ BizEx, or Express/Mesaba, there were endless possibilities.
I did Nashville-Greenville-Dallas a couple of months ago myself. Great back door, and easy access out of DFW without having to deal with the main terminals.

Greenville, MS... you must be talking about Boutique Air. The same person that did that trip report on OGS also did one going from Atlanta-Greenville-Dallas. According to the video description he/she flew it about three weeks prior to it being switched from Atlanta to Nashville.

https://youtu.be/tmW-fgPglOE

Seems that he/she does a lot of videos on small airlines to smaller airports. Might be worth a look if you like small planes.

Correct, CYS-DEN is still in UA's system from July 2 on. They're probably burning to much cash on it right now and decided to pause it until more people decide to fly, much like SMX and FMN have done.

Interesting how DL cut BOS during a week when B6/AA add their JV-ish adds and UA announces LHR service. By my estimate DL is running roughy 40 to 45 flights a day from BOS, way down from the 150-day hub they had planned. Also very interesting considering how DL seems keen to keep frequency and service from SEA against their AS/AA fight... shows that DL is less interested in the BOS hub.

Not surprising as I've lived through at least 3 build-ups and subsequent scale-downs from DL in my lifetime at Logan.

It's because of this.

I know we’ve said it for a year now (separate note: wow) but I will be interested to see what DL’s presence at these business centric “hubs” looks like in the years to come. They seem to have solidified their commitment to SEA thru COVID but it doesn’t seem so clear at BOS and NYC, let alone RDU. Everybody is adding routes/changing networks except DL - time will tell if that was a good or a bad move.

For the legacies, who permanently parked a % of their mainline and regional fleets, could it be that on the back side of all this they will not have the fleet in the next 0-3 years to fly 2019 numbers, and instead of cutting by the same % across all hubs, they will triage and support their fortress hubs and a few others but have to pick either their worse preforming hub (AA in NYC for example) or cut back in a few secondary hubs (RDU and BOS in Delta’s case).

Just spit balling here but the the math won’t support 100% of 2019 with less AC, so instead of giving up market share in ATL, they picked RDU and BOS, and will come back to them a little further down the road as new deliveries pick back up?

Also BOS was about business and some connecting feed to intl. Two week areas. So for BOS maybe just build back the leisure point to point and even expand above 2019 numbers in those markets but leave the high frequency business markets down and not build up long range intl so close to JFK without the demand.

From a Canadians standpoint that is one depressing update. UA is obviously giving up on us (or our bureaucrats) and I'm not entirely surprised. I'd like to hope that some of those cuts will be added back but I'm not holding my breath.

Probably another exemption. G4 recently pulled out of OGS too.
I like that how other people go out of their way to make connections in small cities, something I have done.

Once us Canadians can cross the border by land again, I imagine G4 will eventually come back to OGS. I bet at least 80% of G4’s OGS (or even the entire airport’s) traffic was people to/from Ottawa and the cities & towns along the Ontario side of the St. Lawrence.

I kinda disagree in the sense that UA don’t appear to be cutting any transborder routes outright. They’re simply now seeing the reality that no flights will be permitted to anything beyond YYC, YYZ, YVR and YUL before June, with the latter coming back in June at this point. YHZ, YEG and YWG though have everything cut it appears until November. YOW is showing as (for now) resuming in June and YQB in September to oddly enough ORD, 2 months before YQB-EWR.

This (and it's being going on since Covid hit, not just the last 4 months). In this case, DL pushed out it's schedule cutbacks through May 1st for most routes (it had previously loaded cutbacks through April 11th a couple weekends ago). There are numerous other routes that have been getting cutting a month at a time (see all the instances above where DL had flights loaded for April schedule, but now they are zero). In some cases, routes have been cut several months out or through the end-of-schedule. But most just seem to be getting cut a month at a time.

Good signs of life for AA at the NYC airports.

Glad to see routes continuing to come back. I notice that AA is starting to become more active at JFK compared to last summer. Lot more flights going out.

Hopefully this is a sign of my most watched route coming back... AA’s JFK-LAS.

Side note: Why won’t AA bring back JFK-ORD/DFW?

Well, I do own a light sport, so you could say that I do like small planes!

Done Boutique a few times now. Seems to be a good operation.

Traffic levels in New York and the Northeast won’t be coming back anytime soon, the political situation has seen to that. Rents and property values in the cities are already dropping, while two large NY real estate investment firms filed BK just this week. This will only get much worse when repos and evictions start being allowed. IMO, we are looking at a large economic downturn in the Northeast and West Coast coming this fall.

(This is not investments advice, I am just a schmuck on the internet. Also, I am not a cat.)

Isn't the requirement that all flights go through those four airports currently only in effect through April 30? Given the significant downward trajectory of cases on both sides of the border, I would not be surprised to see that date actually hold if the trend continues (unlike the border closure which has been perpetually extended).

That leaves just MIA-GRU/LIM/SCL with a potentially planned MIA-BOG that keeps getting pushed back again & again. In my opinion, most of them are just gone - not surprising given that they cannot count on AA FFs anymore..

B6 scared off by AS's entry into the market?!

Nah, IDK why some of the B6 markets were excluded. FLL-PDX isn't on here either, but it's still operating 2x weekly within their schedule extension.

It's because of this.

Ah, thanks. That makes sense.

That just feels like either some one or some system missed trimming those two flights out weeks ago. I can't imagine they were waiting for demand to materialize in roughly 10 days from operating them.

Starting to really seem like they chose to jump ship from AA at the exact wrong time. Very sad because I have always admired LA, hopefully they survive in the long run.

I think its probably just that they've been (like most carriers) loading their default schedule and then cutting back on it a month at a time

American also did not cut back any flights and had a loyal following when they left South Bend and that following returned when they came back. The demographics of South Bend flying also have been favoring the DFW area for a long time now. AA also offers First Class sections and bigger RJ's to CLT and DFW.

When demand returns Delta will eventually bring back the 2 daily MSP flights.

Poster wasn't disagreeing with you. Just noting that these are month-to-month reductions/drops that have been going on for many months on many routes. In that context, you could say they are "trying to resume" flights on many routes. The fact that the flights haven't been pulled through EOS (as they have done on certain routes) indicates it will probably resume at some point along with the other routes that haven't been pulled through EOS. Also, DL had loaded MSP-SBN at 3x daily from June through November before Covid hit. It had been 3x daily for only June through August in 2019. Below are reductions during the initial months of COVID from OAG Changes posts (which have continued on month-to-month basis of eventually pulling all flights). At present, it's 1x daily from May 2nd onward. But given that the cuts above went through May 1st on most routes, the May 2nd restart date shouldn't yet be taken as definitive.

Agreed.

Several routes out of SBN were being worked on Pre-Covid. The only one that is definite and will eventually come when things get back to normal is AA SBN-PHL 1.0.

It’s possible at this point that beyond April 30th the other airports can open back up. UA appears to be banking on June for YOW. Even if it does lift at the end of April, it’ll take a few weeks minimum to build back even 50% loads on a single daily C/ERJ.

Regarding smaller fleet scale and DLs position, I think it makes sense. They are still going to have many dominant, or close, market positions in multiple “business centric cities” and competitive offerings elsewhere. They aren’t announcing a bunch of new routes because they are probably don’t feel it’s necessary to chase capacity where it’s been more efficient for them to rationalize fleet size and lower their costs while keeping the premium element to their brand and yield.

Will they be as competitive in New York? I certainly think so- they still have a large international and domestic portfolio from JFK and are leading LGA., obviously a lot of that will lag until we see business come back. Maybe less of the seasonal Europe at the expense of a smaller wide body fleet but that capacity can be “poured” over AMS and CDG with newer larger planes. I think they still have some of the larger seasonal year round markets scheduled with good capacity this summer. Not to mention they rely on much less connections over New York versus United. So many Europe bound sky team North America point of sale customers connect over ATL and to lesser extent, DTW. Not to mention Delta has so many points of departure in the United States with Europe service.

With BOS, even with a smaller than planned hub size, they are a competitor in all the markets they really need to be, just a lesser scale. Not to mention it remains a true focus city/ hub with a descent Delta connection portfolio inter Midwest, good connectivity to the west and eastern seaboard/ Florida. Last I checked, they were still marketing their DUB and FCO along with LHR, AMS, CDG of course.

I don’t think we’ll see delta be as aggressive as some other carriers in the 2021-22 time period because I don’t think it’s necessary for them. They already had a very well rounded network.

I would love to see Europe to IND, CVG, RDU, MCO return.

You're in luck! AA.com still showing 7 on this route with the exception of Tuesdays when it drops to 5. But only on Tuesdays. Those gremlins are still attacking AA's changes as we've said many times before. Seems to be on a random basis, no pattern to it.

AA ABQ-LAX NOV 3>2[2]

This one is also incorrect, still showing 3 in AA's system for November 2021. Actually that [2] for November 2020 is incorrect too, it was [0] last year.

This one is also incorrect, still showing 3 in AA's system for November 2021. Actually that [2] for November 2020 is incorrect too, it was [0] last year.

This is a report of SCHEDULED flights, not FLOWN flights. Prior year they cancelled that flight less than 30 days prior to departure and as you know this report does not track cancels inside the month.

NOV 2021 shows 74 CR7s operating in 30 days which is 2.46 departures and rounds down to 2. Since you say that is incorrect, what is it supposed to be?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier.
WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded

Unless you are saying that 74 is wrong, this is all explained at the top of the report and has been essentially unchanged for over 10 years.

If 74 is wrong what is missing? Is it a particular operator? Etc. If there is truly a problem those are the details needed to fix it with the data provider.
