LY MD-11s: What purpose did they serve?

At two separate points from 1998-2001, LY leased two different MD-11s from World Airways. The first was N278WA from July-December 1998 (which moved on to Avianca, and is now currently stored at VCV since 2017), and the second was N277WA from August 2000 - January 2001 (which moved on to Garuda Indonesia, and was eventually scrapped in 2015 at GYR). My question is twofold, why and what purposes did they serve during their short tenures at the airline?

I seem to recall watching a YouTube video of JFK filmed in 1998 that showed N278WA on the tarmac in a very basic LY livery (not the one that was in use at the time, nor the current one that they were transitioning into at that point).

If I were to guess it was to have a smaller than 747 but larger than 767 aircraft as they waited for 777s which were delivered in 2001.

I do know that their first three 772s (4X-ECA, 4X-ECB, and 4X-ECC) were delivered from Jan - Apr 2001, so that's a possible explanation for the second lease, but the first lease's purpose seems unclear. Were any of LY's 747s undergoing maintenance at that point which required a need for a temporary capacity increase?

According to this article, it was just to provide extra capacity between Israel and the USA, pending a decision on an A330/777 order.

As an ACMI lease, EL AL wouldn’t have been involved in the operation of the aircraft it’s self.

So this was a wet-lease agreement then. Thanks for the update.

LY would've still had to supply some of their security measures with those aircraft though?
