FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I don't know if this stuff had been announced or not. With all the silo'd threads on a.net now it is hard to find route news, but even though they gutted EWR close in, the route adds in the Summer are stunning. This is a major deal. B6 could end up with a significant share of EWR. Part of what enabled this is UA moving a lot of their connecting feed to IAD and of course the loss of international due to covid. Those two coupled together make it MUCH easier for B6 to get traction in EWR where normally invading a legacy hub is near impossible because the legacy can add a bunch of extra flights and fill them with connects. UA has limited ability to do any of that, so you see them adding BOS-LHR in seeming retaliation instead. One wonders how much of this was a message for that route.

DEN-LGA is also super-interesting, and another gut punch at UA. Has F9 been suspending that route lately? They only had 1x per day last I looked.

Thanks for the back up when BZN and VPS were announced in a separate thread the other day. As you know it created a debate that these new cities should just be announced on the Southwest Fleet/Network thread which is miles long and which most of us don't check regularly. I too prefer to read about breaking news when it happens and have it reported separately. That separate thread was erased a few hours later, hope everyone caught it while it was up. Thanks again Enilria.

Wow, on top of the OO/UA* CNY-DEN EAS service. High expectations for Moab this summer. Arches Natl Park has already been near gridlock in years past.

Glad to see DRO-SLC coming back too. DL* tried that back in 2007/2008, hope it works this time.

Agreed. I think we are seeing the LCCs taking the opportunity to “kick ‘em while they’re down” and B6 in EWR is really going for the jugular, it seems.

yep, this came out here http://blueir.investproductions.com/inv ... -160050512

There were some obvious holes in the combined AA/B6's network out of NYC pre-COVID. They had very few flights to Denver and Houston. AA didn't fly there at all. JetBlue did well on the couple of JFK flights they had, but not with business schedule. So it makes sense for them to add LGA-DEN. I'm waiting to see if they add EWR-DEN. Without WN in EWR, there are some non-UA ff on the other end that they could pick up. Since COVID hit, AA hasn't flown LGA-ATL/DTW/MSP. B6 has ATL covered pretty well now out of EWR/JFK. DTW is pretty week with just 4x weekly in April. IAH is pretty weak with just 4x weekly in April. MSP is not flown at all. So, if they want to be competitive in NYC, AA either need to return to those markets or B6 needs to add them from LGA or EWR.

As for EWR, AA really isn't going to help B6 here. At some point, JetBlue needs to enter markets like EWR-ORD/DEN/BNA/IAH if they want to be a truly competitive second option. If they add these, they'd get over 100 flight a day and have the top 20 domestic markets covered pretty well. A lot really depends on how many gates they will have in the new T-1.

B6 is trying to take advantage of UAs ultra-conservative approach. UA was content with sitting back and watching them bleed to death. However, with loads/bookings increasing not so sure that’s going to play out anymore. UA is going to be at a real risk of giving up market share if they don’t start offering more competitive schedules that people want to fly.

I don't agree with that. NYC demand has been down anywhere from 75% to almost 100% in this past year. UA did not cut EWR more than their competitors out of LGA/JFK. They just get the short end of the stick here because the other 2 airports are protected by those slot waivers. B6 has been looking to add at EWR since the slot constraints went away, but was recently not able to do so due to EWR effectively been slot constrained during peak hours. It seems to me that JetBlue "got lucky" here by a confluence of factor:
- WN leaving making Terminal A really empty
- New terminal 1 opening up offering possibility of more gates
- suddenly have a lot of aircraft sitting around
- International demand down, which hurts UA more than anyone else, since a lot of the short haul stuff connects to international flights
- UA looking to get back into JFK (IIRC B6 got gates at T-A in exchange for that)

With all the cuts continually being made to their BOS service, B6 has a lot of aircraft to move elsewhere. Guessing they're just relying on O&D for all that traffic, since you can't make a lot of BOS-NYC connections.

Great news for the people of Moab and southeastern Utah with the resumption of SLC-CNY. Utah airports such as CNY, PVU, SGU, and of course SLC have really been staying strong and seeing growth compared to many other airports. Great to see it happen.

I think it has a chance to do well seasonally (summer + maybe three weeks around Christmas). I wouldn't write it off so quickly...

Keep in mind that B6 has actually cut Boston a lot less than DL. DL is at around 50 flights a day on peak days in April and B6 is about twice that. BOS has seen a larger cut than JFK, but that's due to lack of demand on the shorthaul business traffic which they are not involved in out of JFK.

Also, they are averaging around 3x on both BOS-EWR/JFK in April vs 3x between the two airports in march. So there will be quite a bump in connection options in the event of schedule cuts.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see JetBlue add a seasonal flight to FLL and flights to lax if this flight does well

Very true, but I look at schedules in term of functionality. Although Delta has made tons of BOS cuts, they have maintained a system of funneling passengers to key hubs to keep ability to fly with minimal disruption going. ATL, DTW, SLC. They are also well timed, with connections typically 90 minutes or less.

JetBlue - which I get is totally dependent on O&D traffic, is a mess when it comes to that. Great examples: BOI and FCA -- all require layovers at JFK well over 3 hours. And that is one of the few times you can connect. JetBlue's website typically doesn't allow connections if the dwell time is beyond a certain period of time. The fares are usually cost prohibitive too.

I think it has a chance to do well seasonally (summer + maybe three weeks around Christmas). I wouldn't write it off so quickly...

I wouldn’t be surprised to see JetBlue add a seasonal flight to FLL and flights to lax if this flight does well

I mean.... they did add FLL-BZN/PSP. In this day in age, any route is possible it seems. ;)

There are no major service changes coming to GEG in the near future.

You don’t see JetBlue coming there or more flights to other places on existing airlines ?

With all the cuts continually being made to their BOS service, B6 has a lot of aircraft to move elsewhere. Guessing they're just relying on O&D for all that traffic, since you can't make a lot of BOS-NYC connections.

Well, let's see how long BOI and FCA last first. Look, I know the current situation is rough, but as demand comes back, a lot of these problems and lack of stable schedule will be less problematic. Of course, that doesn't lessen the inconveniences of those who did book early on JetBlue and then got canceled.

The biggest issue with JetBlue has always been its lack of options when flights get cancelled and its lack of destinations. The NEA with AA should allow them to interlining/reprotection that get you to where you need to go in the event of a cancellation. Of course given the reduced spending from airlines, it's hard to say how long hte implementation with take. In the future, if you get cancelled, I think you will be well served to ask helpline if they can put you on AA flights to get to where you need to go.

It doesn't do anyone any good to be so pessimistic around here. The chances of B6 coming to Spokane are slim, even after traffic begins to return to normal. But that doesn't mean we can't speculate on what could possibly happen based on the airlines' current and future strategies going forward.

As for jetBlue, I honestly wouldn't be shocked to see them pull out of PDX for good. If that were to happen, there's no way GEG would get B6 service.

Agreed. Siloing is not good for social media and forum sites.

There’s nothing “gut punchy” about JetBlue going on den-lga against UA. The den-lga market is nothing but trash low fares. JetBlue has to rely on that to fill the planes. United can take some of that, but United also has a huge hub in Denver, with service to several markets that generate high fares and that are popular with New Yorkers. Places like Aspen. Vail. Telluride. Sun valley. Tons of places in Montana. All of those destinations generate $800 plus round trip fares from nyc that United can partake in, while JetBlue will have to make due with the $200 fares from Nyc to Denver only. Do some analysis before you post such drivel.

Also, those flights were all announced nearly 2 weeks ago and have been discussed at length here.

Finally, your pull missed ACK-ORD on AA for this summer. Which was announced this weekend as well.

They only had 1x per day last I looked.[/quote]

Yes, AA had agreed to do JLN and ALO for free but now AA wants out and both cities are being allowed back onto the EAS program. That makes no sense when an EAS rule was revised back in 2012 stating "when your out, your out", but it only applied to cities being served for free during a one year time frame back then. Thanks to Great Lakes, several cities in Wyoming plus FMN, NM got stung bad and now must fend for themselves. Since then cities, like JLN and ALO, can get back on EAS. Thanks to SkyWest for taking on the Wyoming cities and FMN should be back on the map soon even though they're not EAS anymore.

UA is starting to develop critical mass feed on the EAS service system wide. DL and AA seem to have marginal appetite, at best.

It matches their scope models, UA is reliant on 50 seat lift which is the only thing profitable or close to it in the EAS markets. AA and DL don't have that same problem.

This isn’t the first time this route has been flown. I believe UA flew it briefly in the 1970s with a 727.

JFK-BOI is certainly bold but I imagine B6 will make it work. If they have been able to get routes like JFK-TUS/RNO/BUR/ONT/PSP work, I feel like BOI should do fine. Meanwhile B6's EWR push is impressive. They're really getting on UA's nerves with the new addition. I certainly think there's room for a focus city operation at EWR. UA basically runs the place so competition should help.

Happy to see DL returning to places like LNK. I know they cut cities like CAK/AVP/FNT/MHT from their route network too. Hopefully some of those return in the future too.

Wow, on top of the OO/UA* CNY-DEN EAS service. High expectations for Moab this summer. Arches Natl Park has already been near gridlock in years past.

Glad to see DRO-SLC coming back too. DL* tried that back in 2007/2008, hope it works this time.

From the news coverage of CNY it sounds like OO is adjusting the EAS contract and the SLC flight will come at the expense of a DEN flight.

Not sure about DRO. It smells like a OO prorate route, but the news reports don't really say.

I was thinking that adjusting the EAS may be the case with CNY. UA hasn't updated their schedules beyond Apr 1 yet so when they do (Saturday 3/6?), their may be a reduction in CNY-DEN from 2 to 1. Although SkyWest will operate both CNY-DEN and CNY-SLC, it is rather odd that the EAS routes would be split between two major partners, UA and DL.

It is indeed an alternate service pattern

https://www.regulations.gov/document/DO ... -2827-0209

It's not common to have a split between branded carriers but the contract is with Skywest (not United) so the split is a notch easier. I think Cody had both SLC and DEN in summer but that may have been an added unsubsidized flight to the "other" hub.

What is even more noteworthy to me is this is the first addition to Delta's EAS network in many years. Just being a single flight it may not represent anything new, but who knows. If Skywest would be allowed to bid new EAS markets into Delta hubs that could further expand their potential penetration of the nation's EAS system.

The biggest cons for DL to allowing EAS under its banner are scope issues and the opportunity cost of doing the flying rather than something to a larger market. Both of those are significantly smaller issues in the pandemic, unfortunately.

Still no UA adjustments for April.

Someone on the UA thread said to expect that Saturday.

UA did load their April adjustments today (Saturday 3/6). The schedules are basically the same as what they had previously loaded for Mar 28-31.

On SQ...I have to wonder if the ULR flight that used to be SIN-EWR will become SIN-JFK permanently, with SQ25/6 becoming SIN-FRA terminator permanently. The regular arrival could be shifted to the old SQ26 slot, with a departure close to midnight from JFK. (The existing cargo flights have been flying with the A359ULR to JFK.)

Other things:

1. Is PS planning to end all wide-body services and become a regional 737 carrier only? They have parked all of their 777s
2. QF will not immediately return to JFK or KIX, and ORD is postponed indefinitely. To hold the slot at JFK, could they lease that slot out to AA on a temporary basis? AA could find it useful for its upcoming announced JFK-TLV flight, for instance (I see Project Sunrise as their return to JFK.)
