Eastern ( UK ) to start SOU & BHX to GIB.

Wed Mar 10, 2021 1:05 pm

Interesting new route for SOU at least....twice weekly from the end of May.
Aircraft will route SOU-GIB-BHX-GIB-SOU Mondays & Fridays with an E190.
BHX-GIB was last flown by Monarch.

FFS, why wasn't this a thing when I lived in SOU and wanted to visit GIB?!

Glad to see both getting a bit of connectivity.

SOU is getting a lot of attention lately. I think they're dishing out very good discounts to airlines.

What does the E190 do the other 6 days a week?

5 days a week...but a good question. I can't see it scheduled in from anywhere so perhaps T3 haven't figured that out yet themselves or hopefully more new services are in the pipeline. Could well be they'll wait until more countries open up to UK visitors and indeed which countries citizens will be permitted without quarantine in the UK. I would think a SOU - BCN route could do well, for the cruise industry.

BA only fly on the weekend so I can see AGP, PMI and FAO. It's a bit of a change of strategy for T3. They're not the bucket and spade kind of airline but you do what makes you the money. They made a big thing from Teesside about them being 'all inclusive' fares when they had ALC on sale.

Great news! Any update on the runway extension application at SOU?

Oh come on ! This is the UK....even a piffling 164 mtr extention has got the Southampton City Council objecting.

I hope not. Don't those idiots in the council realize what benefits the City in general could gain by having that runway extention done and more people brought into the area ?
To appease the local NIMBY'S, maybe as a compromise allow only the 737MAX and 320NEO aircraft in addition to what's already operating there. They don't make any more noise
than the BE Q400's did.

To play devil's advocate... can you point to specific routes and airlines that would fly to SOU before 2026, but only with an A320 / B737 that actively needs the runway extension ? A route to EDI or AMS doesn't need the extension. MUC failed as a route a few years ago

Furthermore, please ensure that these are routes which will boost Southampton's local economy, bearing in mind the Covid shift away from business travel, and not just taking more local residents to a Mediterranean beach

Cardiff airport seems to be almost entirely about taking Welsh residents to a beach or on holiday. Wizz's new base at CWL doesn't even include a route to Budapest, never mind anywhere else in Eastern Europe - Wizz decided that Cardiff would work only with beach routes. If it were not for the BA engineering base, I would be struggling to see much economic gain for Wales.

"Cardiff airport seems to be almost entirely about taking Welsh residents" - you can re-phrase that to South Wales residents.
Up here in the North, we use Liverpool and Manchester. And yet the Welsh government continue to plough money into Cardiff "for the people of Wales"...

There won't be a sudden influx of airlines into SOU just because the runway gets a 164 mtr lengthen. That terminal won't cope !
But I foresee easyJet, who already used A320's on the weekend SOU-GVA winter ski flights, having a few more seasonal routes. TUI who have used 733's there in the past could well offer a few flights a week to popular summer sun spots. Plus we'll see how BA's initial season pans out this year, I'm sure they'll evaluate the operation at the end of this summer season with a view of next year and beyond. Reports in the travel trade that Summer ' 22 is selling well already.

Easyjet seasonal, TUI, and BA at weekends - these all suggest that the main reasons to extend Southampton's runway are to allow more beach/holiday-centric routes. Great for airlines, but sees a lot of money draining out of the regional economy. Is there anything that would *boost* business in Southampton ?

The local employment possibilities more flights would bring. Flybe's demise had seen many not directly employed by them loose their livelihood.
