Why do you say they have 3 787s in their fleet? Per the 787 production and delivery spreadsheet (google docs) available online, just 2 were delivered.

Do you have the serial #s of the 3 787s that you think they have?

So, they got a Haneda slot! Last year before COVID there was a long discussion (I'm the culprit) on the Indian thread on Haneda vs Narita for Vistara. Hopefully once things get back to normal, it will be a daily flight to HND. I can't recall if they were technically eligible for 7 daily HND slots (when Japan expanded HND slots for India) and will appreciate someone refreshing our memory.

We probably will be doing more of domestic flights rather than international ones for few months to years, depending on how vaccinations happen as well if and when new mutant variants happen in India. Both the double and the triple mutant are cause of concern to both India as well as the world -

I posted the following last year around March 2020 on Haneda slots....................

"The Japanese government released slots after the US military decided to release some of its traffic over Japanese airspace. As a consequence, 50 slot pairs were created. Half for it, 25 slots, were released Equally for Japanese and US carriers for service from Haneda to the US. The remaining 25 were distributed equally to Japan and selected countries. One slot Pair was mysteriously equally allocated to India and Japan for service to India. Since 2 Japanese carriers were flying to India, ANA and JL, they had to share a slot pair meaning only one way of their round trip to Delhi would be during daytime at Haneda. Nevertheless, both the Jap carriers decided to switch their Delhi service from Narita to Haneda (eff March 29) demonstrating just how valuable these Haneda slots are especially to business travelers. An Indian carrier now has the opportunity of a round trip slot pair to Haneda on a silver platter. When has the lottery last struck? If Vistara let’s this go by that’s the equivalent of Vistara giving up free LHR slots. Get it?!

The only thorn with Haneda is that service is supposed to start by March 29. However, with the caronavirus, Vistara can presumably use it as an excuse to defer service and I am fairly certain that given the excellent India-Japanese relationship, the Japanese would accommodate. The other issue is that Vistara’s partner, JAL, already decided to switch their own DEL service to Haneda, and to avoid competition on the same route, they may outwit Vistara and “convince” Vistara to go with Narita on the grounds that this would offer “choice” of airports to travelers using their code share flights from Delhi to Tokyo. Will Vistara fall for this?"

With domestic air traffic reduced within India and international traffic drastically reduced (even compared to a few months ago), I wonder how are these airlines still surviving. SpiceJet which was already in trouble earlier, now may have to borrow even more just to stay afloat. Even Indigo is not out woods as it will be facing huge losses for at least a year.

And the less said about AI the better. In my opinion, if a bid by Tata is semi-decent, even with reduced labor protections, will be accepted by GOI as they no longer can carry AI, the sooner they offload, the better.

I never said they have 3 787s in their fleet. I said they don’t have a need for a 3rd even if they launch their 3rd long haul route. I mentioned that because they have a couple ready for delivery.

IndiGo accelerated A320ceo retirement since COVID19. From peak of 157, now it is down to 64. There seems to be no pattern which one they would retire next, they are retiring both factory fresh and pre-owned A320ceo. Given the current pandemic, do you guys think IndiGo will take delivery of all new aircraft they have on order?

A320neo - 122 delivered out of 342
A321neo - 41 delivered out of 161
A321LR and A321neoLR - 248 (none delivered yet)
ATR 72 - 25 delivered out of 50

I believe they will eventually take all the planes they have ordered, but it will be in a phased manner. Right from day one of operations, IndiGo had planned to retire airframes after a six years of use, replacing them with newer planes from its massive order-book.

However, because of delays related to the NEO programme and also because IndiGo notched up their growth plans to match the domestic demand in India, the airline was forced to source A320ceos from the 'pre-owned' market, in order to quickly grow their fleet. They also had to delay the retirement of their older 'first-hand' ceos.

The pandemic-driven drop in demand is a good opportunity for them to retire those older planes faster, temporarily shrinking the fleet. CEO Ronojoy Dutta had mentioned in October 2020 that IndiGo will trim its fleet size over the next two years.

GoAir to rebrand as "Go First". This is part of their excercise to transition to an ULCC model. They have unveiled a new corporate identity; logo & livery. This is also done ahead of their planned IPO, which is to happen very soon.
https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/ec ... 550520.ece

What I don't understand is, what the ULCC model actually means in the Indian skies? Everything Go First plans to do, can be emulated by their rivals in some way or the other and fares can be matched accordingly. They could have gone ULCC without this ridiculous new brand refresh, which sounds really odd like something on the lines of Level, Scoot, etc.

Legal issues, apparently...

Go Airlines didn’t divulge the reason for the rebranding but its draft IPO prospectus filed with India’s capital markets regulator Sebi revealed that the GoAir brand was owned by Wadia’s younger son Jeh and not the company. Apart from the main brand, Jeh also owns two other marks — Go Airlines and www.goair.in, used exclusively by the IPO-bound company. In March, Jeh had stepped down from the MD’s position at Go Airlines while remaining as its co-promoter

Seems more like a dispute between father & son, over control and functioning of the airline. The son was booted out of the airline recently, and now major changes are on the way over how the company is run.

GoAir may sue former managing director Jeh Wadia over brand rights

I thought the news reports said this is just a fight on who owns the Go name - the son or the father. What type of company has the name owned by one company while the airline is in another company. These Indian family companies always try and play games. I guess if the father/son hadn’t fought, the game would have worked (I guess if they went public, then the public company would have to pay a name license to the other company or something).

These two are unrelated and would not be allowed as AI is not in the business of Cairns and is not party to anything related to Cairns businesses. I am sure GOI would not take kindly to any such actions and would put pressure on US Govt to annul any such actions. Cairns is just out of luck, some time in business you have losses when dealing internationally.

You forgot to mention that this is your person opinion of a legal matter. The arbitration allows Cairn to go after India government assets overseas and they are using their available legal remedies. You can search news reports of how the Indian government, in anticipation of such action, asked Indian banks in the UK to move huge sums of money out of UK to prevent it being seized.

State owned carriers are extension of governments. Air India is very much in play.

BTW, If AI is debt laden, burden on Indian Tax Payers, as everyone claims, why fight take over by Cairn (or) Its debt is cleared and prepped for giveaway to friends, Cairns claim throws a monkey wrench.

Indian airports traffic for fiscal year April 2020 to March 2021 has been published. Obviously the Covid has caused dramatic decreases, in fact compared to March 2021, the current month traffic (May) would be projected to be even worse. It could be atleast fiscal year 2023/24 before the traffic figures come anywhere close to 2019/20.

Does anyone know if runway is being extended at PNQ? I looked at GMaps satellite view and looks like its being extended towards west though by not much. Would it make bigger aircraft land/take off which has been an issue at this time.

Even if it is extended there won't be any widebody operations because it doesn't have the required terminal nor tarmac to accomodate even a 767 let alone A 787 or 330.

And PNQ is an army controlled airbase so I doubt that besides the current runway length would be sufficient for a 788 operations however none started yet cause it just doesn't have the required tarmac and terminal size and no opportunity for further expansion.

Aircraft leasors losing patience with some Indian airlines. Indigo will have to raise cash (but is expected to survive), GoAir and SpiceJet are expected to be some repossessions.

"Lessors are united in not writing off airline debts and that won't change, as some are also under severe threat of bankruptcy," said Shukor Yusof, head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics.

SpiceJet deferring salaries, but not at lowest paygrades:

Unfortunately, the current lockdowns are, in my opinion, too much. There will be consolidation in Indian aviation.

I see Spicejet and Goair facing the brunt of the economic crunch and let's see if they could survive it or not.

As far as IndiGo is concerned then it's safe for sure and Air India anyways is born with a golden spoon so Gov is there to make sure it flies.

Let's see which of the two Go or Spice stands the test !

Vistara will no doubt make it. None of the investors have even slightly indicated that they have or are close to giving up. The loss of $1B is accumulated losses over 7 years. As bad as that still is, it's not in 1 year which I originally thought it was. That fact was conveniently omitted from the post.

As far as IndiGo is concerned then it's safe for sure and Air India anyways is born with a golden spoon so Gov is there to make sure it flies.

Let's see which of the two Go or Spice stands the test !

Other than IndiGo and Vistara, i think pretty much all airlines see an insolvent future at this moment. Spicejet and GoAir along with AirAsia India may need a large cash injection just to survive. GoAir may achieve that with the IPO, especially if they are able to raise the ₹3600cr they expect to. Spicejet has been trying to innovate to generate cash, but let's see how long that lasts without a steep recovery. The smaller regional airlines are probably also as desperate but their finances are more opaque than the larger ones.

I think both Go and Spice will survive, but not in their current form. The IPO is the only hope for Go to raise a large amount of cash but not sure how much of a credit tolerance bankers have for Spice.

With Vistara's $1B loss (over 7 years) and AirAsia India needing a large cash injection, and AI bid looming, what are the options for Tata. They may have to shut Air Asia India off if they bid for AI.

Spicejet will limp along for a while and I wonder how much money GoAir will raise in the IPO. Really a bad time for an airline to go IPO route. There is some light in the end of the tunnel for Indian airlines, as most of the lockdowns will be lifted by middle of June or by July 1st.

We need to also discuss the possibility of Jet (I know, but not zero).

It amazes me how India prioritizes funding for Air India over other options. But that is the priority, so they will survive.

This will be a brutal market for the next year.

Anyone know what AI1163 is all about? It is currently flying DEL-EWR and then onward to MIA. Never seen this before. Unlikely to be a charter, just a repatriation? It seems like an odd time to be starting one now.

Wow AAI is their 3rd largest franchise. Did not know that. Seemed like a very small airline in the grand scheme of AirAsia things but clearly not.

Even if they do, I am not holding my breath. Till the Union Govt. doesn't fix the vaccination mess you won't be seeing me go anywhere, however urgent. Even SC is tired of this shit :(

https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-ne ... 30941.html

How the hell they are expecting us to do anything when there are no vaccines. I do not want to be in a position where I am a health risk to my family. Even if I am asymptomatic, I can pass on the virus. And I don't see this happening anywhere before 1st quarter of next year.

Both SII and Covaxin have said that they will have them by year-end or something. For SII, somebody else had spoken who is in charge of supply and Adar poonawala told he isn't authorized to speak. This is when the gentleman himself is now in UK manufacturing vaccines for UK. So all in all, I don't see any major change happening even if they do throwaway prices because anywhere you travel even for tourism purposes, you just won't get the facilities. Then there is the possibility of getting into localized lockdowns. The business sector anyways is doing WFH and that is cheaper for companies, hence most of them are also asking their employees to do remote zoom meetings or whatever. Overall, don't really see anything good happening over the next 2-3 quarters. Lot of it will depend on how fast or slow the vaccination happens.

As far as PNQ is concerned, I have long ago given away all hope. Unless Maharashtra Govt. plans a new airport or gives assent to the Union Govt nothing gonna change for next 5-10 years. And anyways, right now they have other priorties.

Indigo imposing leave without pay (LWP):

This is sad, but I see no survival without harsh tactics. I posted above SpiceJet didn't pay employees, I consider that far worse (labor without timely compensation).

These airlines have no better options, but what about AI employees, are they still getting full pay. And I haven't heard anything about Vistara either.

I remember we both crying a few weeks or month ago about the sad state of affairs for what is suppose to be the best candidate for wide body operations but not been paid attention to.

It was actually many months ago. The way I see it. Somebody did share the numbers ago. PNQ is not even in the top ten list of that. And then again, we know that the numbers shared are also subdued, will probably 2 -3 years or more to get back to where we were in 2019.

Even if there is recarpeting and extension of the runway, I read about the recarpeting but not so sure about the extension. Also for wide-body wouldn't it need to be also wide rather than just the extension.

Even then, all the arguments are moot, till there isn't that much traffic. On top of it as others have shared it is a military/Air force controlled airport. So at the most, the civilian airport would be max at 10 - 12 hrs. So as of right now, lot of ducks need to be lined up and don't see that happening soon. For that to happen, vaccination has to be done on overdrive and markets have to open up. Till we have localized lockdowns all over the country, it just doesn't make sense to me to go anywhere either for work or fun. Just doesn't make sense.

Im sure that was me who was discussing all these factors with you a few months ago and we had a long discussion about the tragedy called PNQ...Its just sad that a well deserving city doesn't even have its own civil Aerodrome.

Hope things change for better in the future !

I don't really care whether it was you or I, it's irrelevant. What is only relevant that PNQ does not have what is needed for its people and population. Also people don't seem to care. If they cared enough, they would pressure the Government, no matter who is in chair. But we haven't seen that. And this is same everywhere. I haven't seen Mumbai citizens agitating that no work is being one on the second airport. It is only when people ask questions and agitate that Governments are forced to come out with answers. Or if they have their own greed. After the two red herrings for new Airport, Puneties more or less have resigned themselves to fate.

I agree for I feel Puneties know they aint getting any further development and newer international routes from their city and have probably accepted the same old model of catching flight from BOM to the rest of the world.
