WN 737MAX at FLL?

Sun Apr 11, 2021 3:58 am

I flew out of FLL today and saw a WN MAX parked at gate A5 from ~3-5PM. Looks like it was N8712L. Was this revenue service, a frame that was dinged by the new electrical issue, or some return to service work?

Its a pre-grounding delivery frame, hence not affected by the new issue.

How far could WN make it into South America if they decide to give it a go from FLL? BSB?

I think GOL was running their max MCO-BSB prior to the grounding, so FLL-BSB would surely be possible for WN. With a stop in SJU, even EZE is possible.

You're dreaming. WN couldn't even make MEX work from any U.S. origin. MEX, the fifth highest passenger volume international destination airport from the U.S., ahead of FRA and NRT. Anything in Brazil would be three times as hard.

The altitude and heat in MEX probably have more to do with those limitations than the range of the MAX.

He was talking commercially, not operationally.

I doubt we will see WN in BSB anytime soon. WN performs best at international leisure destinations with heavy US point of sale. That doesn’t describe BSB all that well (or MEX). There is a lot less competition than MEX though.

Yes, why is that? No marketing to customers in other countries? Too American?

WN's product distribution is far more insulated than most legacy carriers and does not have global reach other than their own website, which had some problems with currency and acceptance for foreign credit cards. I assume those issues are being addressed , somewhat.

Well, WN was too American in the sense that it only accepted US currency. It’s hard to sell tickets to people in other countries if you don’t accept their currency. That problem has been rectified, so I think we will see another foray into Mexican business markets, as well as testing the waters in Canada.

JetBlue and Alaska also couldn't make Mexico City work.
