Antonov AN-12 out IAH today
Flew home to IAH today and landed around 12:00. There was an AN-12 on the cargo ramp. Didn't have anything but my phone camera, but waited around to watch it depart around 12:47. I've never seen an AN-12 at IAH or at all really. Anyone know the story on this plane?

The AN12 is a fairly regular visitor to IAH. Not really rare but not common like the 124. I remember seeing one for the first time playing football at school in 7th or 8th grade, my school was under the 27 approach. That thing was super smokey! I've been away from Houston now for just over 3 years but it was becoming more frequent there as well before I moved and I've seen some pictures in the database of it in IAH after I moved.

Cavok Air has been flying MGA-IAH-SBD round trips for months now. I'd definitely be curious to know what they're carrying...

It is regular visitor at IAH. It flies between Latin America/ Caribbean, Houston and St Bernardino as well. It is Cavok Air UR-CKM An-12 in orange/navy colors that replaced UR-CKL which was flying between these airports since Christmas.

Seen and heard (above the clouds) a few times in the last few months here in Central Texas en-route to IAH from SBD..unique sound usually about 20-23, 000 ft or less.

The San Bernardino flying has been going since around last July or thereabouts, and usually continues from IAH to Managua (MGA.) I've recorded UR-CJN, UR-CNN, UR-CKL, and once, UR-CNT (Ukraine Airalliance instead of Cavok.) I'm impressed that it's been regular enough flying that they've rotated different aircraft in and out, and curious about what the cargo onboard is.
One day by chance there was a civilian C-130 visiting SBD on the same day - kind of an interesting comparison.

Saw a Cavok Air AN-12 at YYZ last December, flying in from SBN. is that airport some sort of hub for them?

I heard an An-12 that had just left IAH a few minutes ago. At 4500 feet about half a mile from my house. Very noticeable compared to the rest of the traffic I hear (and see when I bother to walk outside). I imagine it would have been loud if I had actually been under the flight path!

Definitely strange times with Soviet-era turboprops flying around America. I remember this one time in the 90s (NOT band camp) I was out at Stapleton (DEN) and three Russian aircraft were cruising overhead at high altitude. I think it was 2x TU-95 and an IL-76. Most likely during one of their visits to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. It was sooooo cool!

I get the MGA end of things, as Houston has many connections with Central America. But what on earth is at or near SBN that would require such an aircraft?

The An-12 is a beast. When I see one, I always think about that story in 1986 when the crew of an An-12 that took off from Chelyabinsk has lost consciousness on climbout because of hypoxia (as discovered later, an escape hatch was not properly closed). The An-12 was not on autopilot when the pilots passed out. It continued to climb on its own, stabilized somewhere between 7000 and 8000 meters and has flown over Siberia for 1 hour 10 minutes totally uncontrolled, changing directions at the whim of wind currents. Fortunately, the second pilot (=FO in the Soviet system) woke up and managed to bring the plane to a lower altitude to allow the rest of the crew to recover and land.
