HRL - New Airline Announcement 4/14

Tue Apr 13, 2021 5:46 pm

Per their Facebook, new airline announcement at 10am tomorrow. They already have a decent amount of airlines. I doubt it’s NK and B6.

So G4, Avelo, Breeze?

My money is on G4. I bet they’re looking into turning HRL/South Padre into a vacation destination.

I also think that’s a date where a couple other airports are announcing new airline service and G4 is the rumored airline at those airports too.

What other airports?

Looks like this was a push from last Friday.

Maybe not G4, as G4 serves MFE just down the road (35 miles away).

HRL's Facebook post hints at international: https://www.facebook.com/flythevalley/posts/4212147482137110

So perhaps a Mexican carrier.

I don't know where Canada is in terms of lockdown/reopening, but the Rio Grande Valley draws a significant amount of snowbirds--but that's winter.

What’s with that smile on the Facebook post? Maybe it’s hinting at Turkish Airlines to IST with their Miles&Smiles program or GOL using its 737 MAX to MAO with their Smiles Loyalty Progam :spin:

But seriously, Breeze calls itself the “World’s Nicest Airline”. Not exactly related to similes, but it’s something.

How is Mexico to HRL demand compared to Mexico to LRD/MFE? Could HRL-MEX/MTY/GDL be viable?

I wouldn’t rule out Spirit just yet. They’ve been expanding lately.

Too much of the ticket price gets eaten up by various cross-border fees demanded by both parties. For most any U.S. city proximate to the Mexican border it's going to be better to cross by land and take an intra-Mexico flight. Better chance for non-stops to more destinations. Lower fares. Look at pricing for ELP-MEX vs. CJS-MEX, for example.

G4 already serves MFE, which is only 35 miles from Downtown Harlingen, but South Padre Island is 80 miles east of MFE. HRL is much closer to South Padre Island with HRL being 41 miles from HRL, but the driving time to South Padre Island to HRL airport is approximately 55 minutes compared to the 1 hour 20 minute driving time to South Padre Island from MFE.

If G4 is wanting to provide access to South Padre Island from the Midwest, G4 adding nonstop service to MFE from Midwestern cities such as CVG and IND might be an option as there is only a 25 minute driving time difference between HRL-South Padre Island and MFE-South Padre Island since most of the drive to South Padre Island from MFE being along freeways (I-2, I-69E, I-169).

BRO is even closer to South Padre Island than MFE or HRL with BRO being only 24 miles from South Padre Island and the driving time to South Padre Island from BRO being approximately 35 minutes. BRO also already has a long enough runway that can accommodate G4 A319/A320 aircraft with G4 already operating out of some other airports with shorter runways such as BLI, MDW, GRI, HGR, HTS, LEX, SNA, ROA, STC, SCE, and TVC.

I'm going to guess VivaAerobus to MEX or CUN. It mentions a giveaway international flights, so I presume it's a Mexico flight

WN does have nonstop service to SJD from SAN, even with SAN being near the California-Mexico border, access being there to TIJ from the U.S. side of the California-Mexico border via Cross Border Express, and TIJ having nonstop service to SJD on VB and Y4. However, SAN is a much bigger market than ELP or HRL, and WN also has a much bigger presence at SAN than it does at ELP or HRL. Some of the demand for WN SAN-SJD nonstop flights is also coming from northern San Diego suburbs that are further from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Harlingen area of the Rio Grande Valley region is further from REX and MAM on the Mexican side of the border, but Brownsville is near MAM on the Mexican side of the border and McAllen is near REX on the Mexican side of the border.

HRL makes sense if it is a Mexican airline with the Harlingen area being further from MAM or REX on the Mexican side of the border.

AngelsDecay, I understand. It can be frustrating when folks assume everyone is familiar with certain airport, aircraft, or airline identifiers.

Most airports in this thread are referenced to the United States; South Texas, specifically the Rio Grande Valley; a few are airports in nearby communities in Mexico.

HRL: Harlingen, Texas (Valley International Airport)
BRO: Brownsville, Texas (South Padre Island International Airport)
MFE: McAllen, Texas (Miller International Airport).

Other airports referenced include:

LRD: Laredo, Texas
REX: Reynosa, Mexico
MAM: Matamoros, Mexico

They should bring back that feature where you could hover your mouse over the code and it'd give you the airport. Why they haven't is beyond me.

MTY would be a bit of a surprise to me. I posted earlier Viva Aerobus to MEX or CUN, but MTY is only a 3.5 hour drive from HRL, which is relatively short. Again, there is an international dimension to it, but it still seems like that's a bit short.

Nearly confirmed. HRL is showing up as an option but no flights are available for booking yet.

VivaAerobus seems to be doing quite well in Texas. They resumed DFW in November 2020 after leaving five years prior. They started with sub-daily MTY/MEX-DFW but it looks like they're operating 2x daily for both routes on some days this month.

They recently added BJX-IAH/SAT as well.

I'm a bit surprised they're adding HRL before Austin. Aeromexico has suspended MEX-AUS (resumes in July) and Interjet is essentially gone. I suppose they're seeing some leakage into MEX/MTY-SAT.

It's ironic how they chose the same days to fly as Aeromar's flight from MFE. But we are comparing apples to oranges with price and aircraft.

Its not that its difficult. People do it all the time especially from the Mexico site. If you go to the malls in the Valley or Laredo, you see almost as many Mexico license tags as Texas ones. I dont know that many Americans do the drive but Mexicans do it all the time.

That's what I was kind of referencing, you wont see many American's do that drive. Mexicans yes, American's no. Even for some Mexican's in the RGV they are hesitant of that drive or going through Matamoros/Reynosa.

VivaAerobus is positioning the MTY-HRL flight as access to South Padre Island: https://www.facebook.com/VivaAerobus/po ... 0995927696

Also, in the VivaAerobus booking engine, Harlingen is listed as "Harlingen/South Padre Island".

Can't say I really get that. If you're Mexican and getting on a plane, CUN has much nicer beaches and more to do. The flights to CUN are cheaper than the taxes on the international flight and you don't have to deal with U.S. CBP.

The requirements for driving your car into Mexico beyond the border zone are pretty cumbersome, and you really don't want to be in a car accident in Mexico if you're a foreigner without Mexican insurance.

That’s a bit disingenuous. At least “Harlingen, Texas” tells someone who has never heard of it that it is in Texas, which narrows it down a bit. A code could be a pretty much anywhere in the world.

That feature was part of the custom-coded forum system on the old site. It'd have to be re-implemented as whatever sort of customization this forum software allows, and while it's likely possible as a plug-in, it probably doesn't drive engagement enough to justify the development expense. Plus that feature for airport/airline codes was notoriously buggy, and there were some codes (FRA was one I remember well) which always led to weirdness in the HTML code which accompanied the airport code.

I mean honestly it is not that hard to type in "XXX airport" into your favorite search engine if it's not familiar to you.

Since the pandemic has started fewer and fewer Americans and Mexican-Americans want to drive trough Tamaulipas, due to the increase in carjackings and extortions especially that target Texas plates. Those who drive prefer to drive in convoys called caravanas escorted by the Policia Federal, but those only are organized a few times a month I believe.

It was a cool feature. How about a airport code lookup widget in the top bar to the right of FORUM and FAQ when you're viewing an Aviation Forum section? Similar to a stock quote box on most investment sites?

VivaAerobus seems to recently be adding lots of capacity from MTY. On some days it’s flying 4X MTY-SAT. What’s the source for this sudden rise in supply/demand?

The land border is closed for Mexicans and the only way to enter Texas is on a plane. Remember lots of them have houses there and love shopping in SAT, IAH and to a lesser extent DFW. Also access to the vaccine may be driving some of the traffic.

Hello...forgive me my sincerity, but having in mind that Airliners.net is a worldwide forum do you mind to put HRL in "plain words" at least once please...Many thanks in advance :)

Many tanx with this very kind and elucidative explanation...yeap, they should work again on that old feature with the mouse giving us the answer when "passing"over it...Cheers my friend :)

VivaAerobus has increased frequency on MTY-HRL-MTY before the first flight has even taken off.

Originally scheduled for Thursdays/Sundays, VivaAerobus will now fly MTY-HRL-MTY on Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays/Sundays in May. Not sure if this will spill over into future months.

My guess is this is to go up against Aeromar’s MTY-MFE-MTY.

I can tell you it provides a much, much safer alternative to getting from The Valley to Monterrey. It’s not a very safe region to be driving in.
