Britannia Airways to the USSR and Egypt

Tue Apr 13, 2021 9:48 pm

Browsing the net out of idle curiosity recently I saw an old Britannia route map from c 1977 which showed routes to Moscow and Leningrad (as it then was) in the USSR and also routes to Cairo and Tel Aviv. Now I was under the impression that Western carriers were never allowed charter operations to "Iron Curtain" countries and charters from the UK to Egypt and Israel were non-existent at that time. How did a private charter operator manage to penetrate the Soviet Union? How did they manage to get the Egypt and Israel routes which were controlled and jealously guarded by BA, Egyptair, and El Al? And could the early 737's of the time even reach Cairo or TLV nonstop from the UK?
