Updated: UA adding seasonal IAD-ATH, EWR-DBV and ORD-KEF

Sun Apr 18, 2021 10:06 pm

Gonna be interesting to see! I’m gonna predict ATH and KEF might be involved if these are longhaul routes.

Let me know what you think!

UA already serves ATH and KEF, both from EWR, seasonally. If anything, I see them putting the 77W on EWR-ATH for this summer and a 767-300ER or 400ER on EWR-KEF or possibly a 757-300. As for brand new routes, hmmm...if we're talking nothing previously announced, I suspect it could be EWR-DBV, LAX-TLV, DEN-CDG, plus more Central America, Caribbean, and Leisure markets closer to the US where you'd need a passport.

French President was on TV today saying they are looking to allow vaccinated Americans in... they are working on the plan to loosen restrictions.

My guess is KEF/ATH from ORD.

Possibly some UK routes? I know there is expected to be a travel corridor between the UK and USA, so wouldn't be too surprised to see some new routes there. My other guess would be extra Carribbean flying.

I venture to guess they will start a seasonal ORD-KEF, possibly even DEN-KEF.

SFO to Phuket with them reopening to vaccinated travelers? :stirthepot:

IAH-CUR/SXM/ANU/SDQ maybe? IAH could use a Caribbean expansion to combat recent adds from other airlines

I hope for new Newark routes as well.

I'm not to sure we will see more seasonal routes to KEF outside of the EWR flight.

As far as ATH goes perhaps ORD-ATH but I'm not really buying into an ORD-ATH flight just yet if more capacity is needed UA would probably just upguage EWR to a 789 or a 77E/W.

What I'm thinking is LAX-TLV, I know UA has had its eye on this route well before the pandemic when the rumor was it would be a toss up between ORD and LAX. ORD won round one and the ORD flight resumes in early May, I'm thinking UA may want to jump on LAX-TLV before LY gets their operation back on track.

Then I'm looking at DEN even with all the restrictions I'm thinking UA may look at DEN-CDG or DEN-AMS. DEN performance during this pandemic has exceeded UA's expectations which is why DEN is now (and has been since June 2020) UA's largest hub, operating more flights than any other hub in our network. DEN has out performed all other hubs in out network in terms of total number of daily revenue passengers, and consistently having the highest load factor out of all out hubs.

EWR-BLR?

Its just pure guessing, I had asked someone who's in this business, whether if BLR will get any new routes to the East coast this year or 2022, that person said that it is very likely to happen.
So that's why I'm guessing (though, I personally think 99% it won't be BLR). More of leisure routes & European routes IMHO.

How about IAD-BOM/DEL? IAD and IAH are the two hubs with large South Asian populations that do not have non-stops to India (AI dropped IAD recently). And plus, IAD's location is far better than IAH for connections.

Since it's Summer 2021 new routes acc to their IG story now I'm quiet sure it's definitely not going to be BLR.

DEN-CDG very likely ... especially on the heels of AF announcing CDG-DEN and France looking to start allowing vaccinated Americans in.

They are clearly saying leisure and summer holidays. At least that is what their Facebook post says. Why in the world would that mean Bangalore, India?

Since they mention leisure it will probably involve Tel Aviv or Athens.

AA's ORD - ATH is oversold in July some days. United would like to capture some of that for sure.

Throwing in a few shorter routes:

LAX/IAH to Loreto and La Paz (Mexico)
EWR-CZM/RTB
SFO-SJO/SAL
DEN-MBJ/PUJ/GDL/MEX/GCM
ORD-SAL/MZT

Tomorrow's UA route announcement is likely additional international routes to Mexico, Central America, and/or the Caribbean from UA hubs.

UA has the best social media team out of the Big 3

Looks like widebody routes:

I'd put these out as options, assuming they are all widebody routes, I'm not sure whether they'd put a widebody on a new route to the Caribbean

ORD or IAD-ATH
ORD or IAD-KEF

I'd be surprised to see any India
ORD & IND

AA & DL

Agreed. Probably mostly from DEN/LAX/IAH/ORD. Maybe some IAD-Caribbean thrown in? Even as an SFO fanboy, being realistic here, I'd be surprised to see us get any additions (although they are welcome of course).

No, no guys no India. I made a guess before I saw their IG post about it being a SS'21 destination. I saw the twitter link thinking they will launch a new route in Winter 2021 or later, so my bad.
As everyone states, its going to be either be some touristy European to US city pair :-)

Good luck!

My guesses:
Asia/Oceania:
1) LAX-PPT (SFO was extended to year round in 2018-19, plus Tahiti reopens 5/1: https://thepointsguy.com/news/french-po ... travelers/)
2) DEN-SIN (SIN seems like a likely country to open to vaccinated tourists. Plus one can go to the Maldives or Thailand from SIN).
3) DEN-PVG (People are still stranded in China from the initial travel bans).
Europe/Middle East/Africa:
1) IAD-CMN (AA gave up on CMN before it even started, since IAD will have ACC and LOS, makes perfect sense).
2) DEN-CDG (AF will be on the route in July, French president said France will open to vaccinated travelers this year).
3) EWR-DBV (Croatia now open to vaccinated travelers).
South America:
1) IAD-LIM (fill the void that LAN/LATAM left).
2) EWR-GIG (GIG is very touristy, hopefully Brazil starts taking COVID seriously).
3) SFO-GRU (feed from TPE/PVG/ICN to S.A. similar to what AA did at LAX with its Asia and South America flights).

Low yield VFR and far too long distance-wise to utilise 2-3 787 frames profitably when there are stronger yields in other leisure/tourist markets which are of shorter distance than USA-South East Asia.

Most South East Asian cities might (or might not) work for non-stop USA flights if the carrier is either partly (or entirely) subsidised (e.g PR ex-MNL) or if its a long-haul LCC to suit the cost-sensitive budget/tourist nature of those markets.

Honestly I think you're really far off the mark here. This seems like nothing more than a wish list of random routes. Especially the DEN ones! DEN-SIN is not even flyable with UA's current fleet. Lol.

this one's easy - following the current trends of everyone's travel habits, it's going to be every city in the entire network - to Cancun.

It may as well be this and DL was doing it before the pandemic. I cannot think of anything outside of ORD-KEF that really makes sense and DBV probably won't be the next Iceland.

Are their spokes with some slack on Saturday/Sunday? I'm thinking BOS/PHL/SEA/MIA/DFW must have some slack on the weekends.

Something to remeber is the fact that all 777-200As and 222ERs are out of commission right now. I would imagine that it will most likely be 90% short haul Int'l flying.

I’m going to think more inside the box and agree with the Latin America predictions. IAH-Colombia, or deeper into Mexico and Central America seem like safe guesses. I’m not seeing Asia and Europe, although I would like to be wrong. Latin America is close and it’s clear people feel comfortable staying within 4-5 hour flights away. I truly believe a mental barrier exists right now between travelers and flying long distances (like 6+ hours nonstop). People want to stay “close” still, I think.

You have to think it's going to be short haul international routes from either Denver or Houston. Central America from IAH has always been huge.

I would like to see UA add EWR-KUL and it would possibly be on the 777-300ER to compete with the SQ 21/22 flights since they’re bringing those flights back to EWR.
