I hope this ends up being a simple Midwest-CUN announcement after all the speculation
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

KUL would be extremely unlikely (especially for a non-stop). KUL is largely a low yield price sensitive VFR (Visiting Family & Relatives)/budget tourist route for SE Asia-USA market, just like other tourist/beach routes such as MNL, BKK, HAN, etc.

Most SE Asia - USA non-stop routes would only be suitable for partially or wholly government owned subsidised full service carriers and/or long haul Low Cost Carriers to suit the largely price sensitive VFR nature / tourist market of most SE Asia cities.

The 777-300ER does not have the range to do that with any meaningful load.

My guess is EWR or IAD - DXB. Considering the UAE is open for tourism it might be a good time to try to get in on the action

I would imagine that we could also see a flight to Croatia or somewhere else in the Balkans.

The other option is that we are just gonna see a bunch of Caribbean and Central America adds

I'm expecting LAX-TLV if Long Haul. Maybe LAX-ICN since there are multiple daily cargo flights to ICN. UAL could make a lot of money on the cargo sector between LAX-ICN.

Just a random thought - do secondary airports in Greece, such as Thessaloniki, have the necessary infrastructure to support widebody aircraft and customs?

From what I know SKG doesn't have any widebody aircraft on a regular basis but they can service them if there is such a need. I think SkyGreece planned long-haul flights from there some years ago.
Many island airports like Rhodes, Heraklion... have many widebodies especially operated by airlines such as Thomas Cook, Rossiya...

Now that is funny.....19 days past April fools. KUL??? Absolutely zero chance of that happening. KUL is mostly a VFR route from the US, a long, thin route, with not much in the way of corporate traffic and nothing like EWR-SIN.

French President Macron has announced today that France will reopen borders to vaccinated American travelers in May. I could see EWR-NCE. DEN-CDG. More Mexico, and Colombia I think as well.

EWR-NCE was announced for Summer 2020 in 2019 along with EWR-PMO, but obviously it was cancelled due to the pandemic. I don't see UA adding anything more beyond CDG possibly this year. Too risky to add a new station entirely. NCE was added from EWR to compete with La Compagnie.

Press release:

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-release ... 71038.html

United is adding three new flights to its international network, giving travelers more options for summer travel by flying direct to countries that are starting to reopen to vaccinated visitors. Starting in July, United will offer new direct flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to Dubrovnik, Croatia, from Washington Dulles International Airport to Athens, Greece and from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Reykjavik, Iceland, all subject to government approval.

United's Travel-Ready Center enables customers to upload their COVID-19 testing and vaccine documentation, and have it certified ahead of check-in so customers can get their boarding pass before getting to the airport. United is the only airline that does this seamlessly in the airline's mobile app.

Always thought a second flight to ATH was going to happen soon, I just wasn't sure between ORD and IAD.

Some data for indirect passengers (total, both ways) as of 2018 (before AA's ORD-ATH was launched) from Athens Airport:
CHI-ATH: 85,500
WAS-ATH: 32,500

Looks like UA went for the smaller market with no competition. And they will get some connecting traffic at IAD as well.
If this goes well, we might see ORD-ATH in a couple of years. And I'm hoping for EWR-ATH year-round at some point.

That would not be smart. 'Responding' to a carrier opening thin route is just a prescription for both carriers to lose money. And there's no meaningful PHL-DBV O&D.

Yes, PHL-DBV was announced in 2018 and commenced in 2019.

In 2020 AA planned to increase it from 3x weekly to daily and extend it into late October.

I doubt it. They planned using the 787-8 last summer before the pandemic but IMO I don't think they'll come back until the 321xlr come into play which around the time frame hopefully European leisure travel is back to normal

PHL-DBV was performing well. Also, AA trans Atlantic service from PHL isn’t O&D dependent. Just the opposite actually.

That was his point. In launching a response AA would be competing for the same connecting passengers as UA @ EWR, while having a smaller O&D pool to benefit from.

I have a feeling just like how we saw the airlines "chasing" domestic outdoor leisure markets, we are going to see a gold-rush of airlines chasing international leisure markets open to vaccinated passengers.

IIRC PHL-DBV performed well but its traffic was heavily skewed towards catering to the cruise market, which obviously hasn't returned.

KEF has a reputation for terminal congestion, as I understand. Not an easy place to maneuver through. There are several new flights coming, including this one. It will be interesting to see how it all goes.

Per your link they are also increasing or resuming several other international destinations including three in Africa. Great news but I wonder if they will have the wide body fleet capability by the time they plan to start.

KEF was congested because of FI's hub operations. Since most of Europe is largely closed off, there is more than enough room at the airport.

Do you have a source for this? AFAIK Dubrovnik is not used to (dis)embark passengers or crew regularly by any large cruise lines. Cruises calling in Croatia usually start/end in ports such as Venice, Piraeus (Athens) or Civitavecchia (Rome).
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

just with the LHR reductions, there will be plenty of opportunities to add these flights. Then when you start to factor in the likes of NCE/PMO/NAP, etc. the fleet has plenty of options for wide body longhaul to Europe.

Croatia actually mate :)

Dubrovnik is a rather popular Mediterranean tourist spot but it skews towards European travelers. Americans are just sort of starting to discover it.

I’ve been looking at the UA travel ready center to see how vaccination data is uploaded, but haven’t been able to find it. The vaccine card that you get normally is not a very reliable indicator. It is easily forged. Does UA have some way to check a government database? I know that in Nevada I can see my vaccination status on a state web page and I presume that since the federal government paid for it that they also have the records. Can UA access something like that? I am ready to go somewhere. Anywhere.

Not exactly. DBV is a stop on cruises in the region, not a starting or ending point for cruises, and it grew to be a very popular destination on its own thanks to Game of Thrones (a lot of it filmed there).

Anywhere.

There will be plenty of forgery if governments mandate this, and I'm sure there will easily be a link tied to your account for airlines to verify or even immigration officers. As for going somewhere, you can hop on a plane to a lot of locations today without a VC, so nothing is holding you back from going anywhere if that destination allows.

Wonder if AA will restart the PHL-DBV now as a response.

Not only that jab at AA from UA, but AA drops PHL>ATH the same week UA announces IAD>ATH.
