While the A321XLR is being assembled, a sad news, Bernard Ziegler passed away on May 4th.

The son of Henri Ziegler (another VIP of the French aerospace industry), Bernard joined Airbus in 1972 as head of flight test and was directeur technique (chief engineer) of the company during the Airbus A320 development. As such he was intrumental in defining the Airbus FBW and crew interface. He was co-pilot during the first flight of the prototype on 22 February 1987.

Saddened to hear of his passing a couple days ago.

Humbled to have flown with him on the A320 and A340, very much ahead of his time. With his two crew dark cockpit and FBW philosophy, very much the standard today for any new airliner.

A grass roots aviation nut through and through even after retirement from Airbus, I will remember his generous hospitality and dry sense of humour.
