Shame, but inevitable, the A345 was too much of a niche aircraft. Hope the two Azerbaijani examples find new homes. Saw the Sands one depart LHR recently, looked amazing.

The airline is called AZAL not Azerbaijani airlines. Azerbaijian is written on the aircraft.

Simpleflying isn't an accurate news source. This isn't confirmed.....just because an airline isn't flying the plane on a route and it was before, doesn't mean it's being removed from service. It means nothing, they use the airplane the way they see fit. Just because it's not on a route going forward it doesn't mean the plane is finished. This site speculates and just report things as fact. I wouldn't go to that site for news

Plus, this airline doesn't use these airplanes consistently at all

The best looking quadrijet ever pretty much is gone for good.

I'm glad I was able to fly on a couple (with Etihad) back in 2014. Much maligned (perhaps deservedly so) but rare nevertheless.

I suggest you actually read the article - the situation is presented and analysed clearly.

In the past SimpleFlying has (rightly IMO) earned a poor reputation. However the author here is a credible and well respected figure in the industry, having previously produced some excellent content and analysis with AnnaAero. This hopefully marks a step change in their output.

I did actually. There's no confirmation so I still think it's pure speculation. Just because it's analyzed it doesn't mean that it's accurate......and I will wait until AZAL confirms

The DC8-62 of the modern era! The 300 of course was the DC8-33 and the 600 was the -63…

The A340 is a great looking aircraft and easily one of the quietest, most comfortable wide bodies out there, at least the -300, the only variant I’ve flown on. Last time was in 2018, YUL-FRA.

AZAL is an a.k.a. Per Azerbaijani Airlines' own History page (website, bolding mine):
In April 1992, after gaining independence, a state aviation body - State Concern Azerbaijan Airlines (Azərbaycan Hava Yolları) was established in Azerbaijan by the decision of the government of the Republic.

AZAL appears to be a nickname (AZerbaijani AirLines) much easier for a lot of people worldwide to say than the actual name.

I flew on 4K-AZ86 a few years ago, Dubai to Baku. Besides the comfort one thing that amazed me was the low density seating onboard...i think around 230-ish, while their 767 (i flew on it a day earlier) had a seat count more suited to a narrowbody. So sad to see another already rare A345 retiring.

Yeah sad to see it go for sure. Genuine question.. is it a niche aircraft or did the 77LR just destroy it?

The 77LR destroyed its only niche. The A345 is laughably awful at anything not ultra long haul which is why airlines couldn’t get rid of it quick enough even when they had older A343s or 77Es in fleet.

Niche. It's own poor economics destroyed it. The 777-200LR barely impacted the A340-500, there was little overlap between the operators of the two types. There was Emirates, Air Canada and Etihad. Emirates kept both for a while and probably eventually eliminated the A340-500 more for fleet simplification purposes than because the 777-200LR was superior. Air Canada definitely did replace it with the 777-200LR. Etihad acquired it's 777-200LRs used and scrapped both types within a year of each other. All other 777-200LR customers were already big 777 operators, so I'm not sure those can really be credited to the 777-200LR being superior.

Global Airlines ACMI based out of JNB has a couple of A345’s available. They haven’t flown for a while, but they are available for lease.

Yeah right, 99% the folks on the street there wouldn't know Orange Beach from Ocean Park.... just like the majority of people in any other locale. And those are both in ex-British territories.

Most other countries have a better education of geography, that's all I meant and its very well documented that people in the US just dont get the right education in this space, its not a dig at the US though, you only know what you know.

for example

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... s-17537001 Iran
https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/commen ... kraine_on/ Ukraine

Most people on this forum at are US based probably have a lot better geography than 99% of Americans though, purely due to having a passion for aviation

Trust me, I think most people in the UK will have an idea where Ocean Park is.
