TLV halting operations?

Tue May 11, 2021 6:50 pm

Seems like a Cargo 747 and now a Ukrainian 737 are heading to LCA after holding over VETEK. As well as Fyl Dubai Flight 1627 turning around north of Jerusalem....

Yes the airport is closed due to rocket attacks from Gaza that have hit places in Ashkelon. Quite a few rockets have gotten past the Iron Dome. The IDF has responded by hitting towers in Gaza and the PIJ has threatened to hit targets in Tel Aviv. The situation is extremely fluid at the moment.

Someone at TLV took a video of the sky and you can see like firework above planes. No wonder airlines are refusing to land. UIA was circling for a while. After their disaster in IKA it's a good thing they turned around and landed in LCA.

Will they have enough fuel to complete fully back TLV-FRA now?

They must have planned a fairly high amount of reserve fuel to be able to fly 75% of the distance to TLV, only to turn back and fly all the way back to FRA, plus enough to cover whatever contingency might occur on approach.

EDIT: Assuming they did plan extra reserve fuel given the situation, credit to LH dispatch for maintaining superb situational awareness!

They were near ADB (Izmir) when they turned around - call it 4,000km round trip to FRA. Assuming they loaded enough fuel, that's more than doable for a 321CEO, and it looks like this was actually an NEO.

Currently in the Delta Skyclub at JFK T4. They announced the cancellation of DL234 (JFK-TLV) about an hour ago, after it had already been delayed, it seems.

Are there any alternate airports within Israel that could accommodate at least an A320 or a B737? For example, in an emergency, would commercial airliners be allowed to land at a military airport?

Is there any updates about the offshore airport project
There is no news after feasibility study a few years ago?

Offshore airport next to Netanya face less chance from missile since it would be at least 20km further to the west bank and Gaza than TLV and it is out of the range of most missiles appeared

Well I know it’s doable, but you don’t always fill an A/C tanks to the brim if you don’t need it. Hence my point. But you are correct, this was an NEO.

Yes

Eilat closed, Sde Dov demolished, Haifa runway too short. It's down to Ramon (ETM) and Ovda (VDA) if the military would allow you (and that's a very big if...). They regularly screw the operation of scheduled flights as well with excercises and airspace/route closures. Commercial traffic is not a very high priority for the IAF.

ETH RIP

I suppose in a real pinch one could still land at VDA. Or one of the other air bases ie Nevatim (which is being pushed as another potential international field near BeerSheva)
Preference of course to local airlines (many of their pilots probably trained and flew from these bases during their military service)

Normally, Ramon Airport (ETM) is the alternate if TLV is unavailable.

If you have ever saw rocket launches at night those could be very far away from the airport. nothing in the dark to help show any distance. Don't post to scare peeps.

If rockets are the reason for TLV closure then preference would be to divert away outside of Israel, and certainly not to an Israeli Air Force base.

They were infact quite close to TLV. Rockets hit the areas of Rishon Letzion and Holon which are within 10 miles of Ben Gurion airport.

Airlines are adjusting their TLV schedules, some cancel operations altogether, others avoid night time operations at TLV.

- May 13, KLM plans to operate a daylight return AMS-TLV on A332, instead of the regular scheduled nightime B739.

Anymore changes, anyone ?

Kind of off topic, but does Haifa have commercial service anymore? Couldn't find any flights on Israir's website.

A Turkish and an Aegean are holding over KONFO.

While writing this it looks like the Aegean gave up and is heading back home....

Secondary question: how are cargo goods, including critical medical supplies, being moved out of Israel? (Teva and Perrigo’s Israeli division are major drug manufacturers there.)

I guess for foreign airlines that can't return home, safest is to use LCA as an alternative airport. I think some like UIA have already done so.

From an Instagram post by El Al in the morning (Israel time):

In accordance with the guidelines of the authorities, incoming flights to Israel on May 13th will land at Ramon Airport (and not at Ben Gurion Airport).

At Ramon Airport, passengers will go through passport control, take their baggage and will have a Covid-19 test.

Passengers will then be transferred by buses to the center of Israel, if they choose this option..

EL AL ground staff will be waiting to assist at Ramon Airport.

Please note, flights departing from Tel Aviv will operate from Ben Gurion Airport as planned.

Please note, flights LY026 and LY004 from New York (JFK) and Newark (EWR) will land at Ben Gurion Airport.

For information and updates please contact us at +972-3-9771111.

I notice that ELM (Ramon Airport) is not visible from Google Maps, it's like it's been dusted over. It's a first I am coming across for a locale.
