Sun Country SBA\STS service

Wed May 12, 2021 11:21 am

Ahoy there,

In 2018, Sun Country launched several new routes including MSP-SBA and MSP-STS-LAS. While these seasonal routes were obviously axed by 2020 due to the pandemic, I have been unable to find the schedule for them after some hunting around. Both flights I remember were scheduled with 737-700s, but I have seen photos of -800s subbing at both airports.

Thank you in advance to whomever is able to pull this up! Would be nice if they return one day, though of course Sun Country now has retired the 737-700s (sans 1 VIP example left for charters I think).

The -700 in the fleet is not in VIP configuration anymore.

I believe both SBA and STS have been permanently cut.

The original flying was based around using idle aircraft and repositioning flights for revenue that flew out to the west coast to cover a travel contract for Mountain West NCAA football. The planes would ferry back to STS after ferrying out to move teams around and fly back to MSP after the teams were all back. I do not believe that contract was renewed, with the loss of they key drivers to get those planes out west with artificially enhanced economics I doubt we see this come back unless another NCAA type travel arrangement occurs or STS gets incentives.

At least to start in 2017, looks like it was a funky schedule out of Santa Rosa, MSP-STS on Thursday, STS-MSP on Sunday. Also, the MSP service was advertised on the 737-800 to start, though I could see the 700 filling in. Not sure what the plane did in between those flights as the initial press release doesn't mention any other routes.

From one of the articles I found online about the 2017 service:

The MSP-STS flights will be on Sun Country’s 737-800 aircraft featuring a two-class configuration with 12 first class seats and 150 coach class seats, providing ample options for a variety of traveler needs.

Flights are scheduled to arrive at STS from MSP on Thursdays at 12:00 p.m., starting on August 24, 2017, an ideal day and time for leisure travelers to arrive for a Wine Country getaway. Flights to MSP from STS will depart Sundays at 9:55 a.m. starting August 27, 2017, for business or leisure travelers to head east.

Doesn't mention what time they left or arrived in MSP though.

By 2018 things were a little more normal with a Monday/Friday schedule and there were also seasonal flights to Las Vegas from STS, though I couldn't find the exact schedule.

The Santa Barbara flights were at least advertised initially on the 700, with a seasonal Thursdays and Sundays schedule.

Thursday - Sun Country Flight Schedule
Depart SBA 9:55 am PST | Arrive MSP 3:25 pm CST
Depart MSP 7:05 am CST | Arrive SBA 9:05 am PST

Sunday - Sun Country Flight Schedule
Depart SBA 5:50 pm PST | Arrive MSP 11:20 pm CST
Depart MSP 2:55 pm CST | Arrive SBA 4:55 pm PST

PM me, I did the whole AS fleet plus Atlas haha.

Anyway, thank you guys, I appreciate the great information. I had a feeling due to the nature of the schedule that it had to do with positioning. A shame it didn't stick, I caught SY in STS but never got to shoot them against the mountains in SBA.

Despite the fact that Barry is common knowledge to us internet folk, the vast, vast majority of people out in the world have no idea who he is. I have a Barry Wood mask I wore for my FAA written exams, traveling, and even an interview. It will be hilarious looking back, but maybe 1 out of every 5 or 6 times I travel in it, 1 person may notice and get it. I hope it stays that way.

SBA and PSP are popular among rich Midwesterners. Similar to Naples and Scottsdale. Maybe that’s not Sun Country’s market, but SBA was worth a shot.
