FLL is not going anywhere. It really is almost the same market afterall. This is a smart move to compete with the other new LLC at MIA, along with expanding in their home market.

Some routes are gonna need more frequencies. LGA/EWR/PHL just to start.

Wow. I did expect NK to expand to MIA after the other LCC's did. I did not expect this ambitious of a schedule.

Just impressive the amount of airlines and added frequency MIA has attracted since this year.

Congrats to MIA and Spirit. Wish them well.

Another carrier yet doing BDL-MIA. Another win for BDL. This will make AA 3x daily, B6 in 2 weeks, F9 seasonal and now NK doing BDL-MIA. Good news for BDL and NK at BDL.

This is getting nuts. Miami's traffic numbers have already fully recovered to pre-COVID and now this.

And the number of airlines competing on some of these routes now from Miami is also nuts. Only two of the routes are new for Miami - ACY and MYR. The rest all already have at least two airlines. And inevitable we are going to see American Airlines respond aggressively, and maybe others!

Three airlines:
Baltimore - AA, WN, NK
Barranquilla - AA, AV, NK
Cali - AA, AV, NK
Cleveland - AA, F9, NK
Dallas-Ft. Worth - AA, F9, NK (+WN to DAL)
Las Vegas - AA, F9, NK
Orlando - AA, F9, NK
Philadelphia - AA, F9, NK
Port Au Prince - AA, AF, NK
St. Thomas - AA, F9, NK
San Juan - AA, F9, NK
San Pedro Sula - AA, AV, NK
Santo Domingo - AA, F9, NK

Four airlines:
Bogota - AA, AV, NK, LA
Chicago-O'Hare - AA, UA, F9, NK (+WN to MDW)
Detroit - AA, DL, F9, NK
Guatemala City - AA, AV, F9, NK
Hartford - AA, F9, B6, NK
Houston-IAH - AA, UA, F9, NK (+WN to HOU)
Medellin - AA, AV, VH, NK
New York-LaGuardia - AA, DL, F9, NK
Raleigh - AA, DL, F9, NK
San Jose - AA, AV, F9, NK
San Salvador - AA, AV, F9, NK

Five airlines:
Atlanta - AA, DL, F9, WN, NK
Boston - AA, DL, B6, F9, NK
Denver - AA, UA, F9, WN, NK
Newark - AA, UA, B6, F9, NK

Shouldn't DEN be in the 5 airline category?

No STL or MCI. Odd. Maybe more SoFLA traffic skews towards FLL?

Midwest prefers Tampa/Ft. Myers/Gulf Coast. The coasts prefer Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. While the local markets on something like STL-South Florida is often larger than STL-RSW/TPA, remember there's a lot more two-way traffic from Miami that accounts for it.

I don't recall ever seeing an entrance this large in day 1 of another airlines fortress hub. Quite daring indeed.

It seems like NK is replicating some of the FLL hub routes out of MIA as well, seems like feeder/O&D flights to/from STL/MCI would work. AA STL-MIA seems to oscillate between 1 and 2 flights a day. Maybe in the next round.

AA had a good thing going at MIA for a long time. Fortress hub-Leisure markets are being attacked on all sides now buy the ULCC's. Not just AA but yeah, no partying in Ft. Worth today.

Yes they are getting attacked by WN in MIA also elsewhere. I think they carriers are trying to ruin AA

This is insane! NK is not playing. I’m sure we will see more Miami flying soon if this is a hit. FLL is a money making machine but it seems they have hit a wall. There really is not much space to expand there and customs in FLL is a literal nightmare.

I am sure this will not lead to more terminal brawls between passengers at MIA. :duck:

On a serious note, I am sure management at both AA and FLL are just thrilled to see this news. Can’t wait to see what AA’s response is.

Where is NK going to find the space to run these flights? I know overall traffic is down now due to international restrictions but when things return to normal and the international flights are back and the domestic flights continue as they are, where will they get the space to run such a large operation?

Some would argue that AA is perfectly capable of ruining themselves.

I wasn't going to put it that way, but in any market it's good to be the low-cost producer or to get the highest yields, and systemwide AA has neither of those advantages. AA will have the frequency advantage for business traffic, whatever fraction that may be.

MIA also just got added by WN at both. Although I don’t think it’s daily at MCI like STL. That probably kept them away a bit.

I don’t get what their strategy is at this point. They continue the dartboard while getting beaten by WN/NK above them and G4 and potentially now BZ below them.

At this point, NK would be better off buying them to get scale to take on WN.

The fare wars will do wonders for the economies of Miami and South Florida.
For the economy of American Airlines, not so much...

The usual response to this type of incursion, especially an LCC, is to step up the service levels greatly. Frequencies, FF Perks, upgrades, meals, etc. but can AA actually afford to do any of that right now, especially knowing that a huge yield collapse is coming in the fall?

Significant cost advantages to NK by adding MIA. Just the shared crew bases alone will save an incredible amount of money, giving them an even larger cost advantage.

This is a big win for people looking for cheap fares. AA was already running dirt cheap fares ex-MIA during the pandemic, now with the big uptick in competition, expect some really attractive fares for people looking to go to/from Miami this Fall and winter.

Wow!!!! An airline lauches a station with 28 daily flights from the start. Very very ambitious specially with their largest base serving the same market.

Speaking of Colombia (NK's largest international market at least by No. of destinaitons) it seems they don't want the local LCCs to expand into MIA (Viva already there and Wingo expanding aggresively internationally), nor DL or F9 to start any routes.

The country is poised for a soid economic recovery this year and next but after the vaccine frenzy ends, will there be enough demand to sustain these flights to FLL and MIA? Please remember that Colombia's tree main internaitonal airports also have two and even three carriers fying to FLL!

BOG (NK, B6, AV)
MDE (NK, B6)
CTG (NK, B6)

Certainly NK is fighting tooth and nail to keep any competition at bay in South Florida!

Spirit is a hit in Colombia, they fly to more cities there than AA and B6 and just behind Avianca.

MIA has really hit the jackpot this year. Congrats to them. That said, some of their facilities are quite dated (especially F and G). We'll see what happens on that front.

That probably actually works in their favor for the new ULCC entrant. Old terminal, low upkeep cost. The passengers on NK probably aren't looking for the fanciest facilities.

Surprised no MSY, considering how rapidly they've been building up there, both domestically and now internationally

MIA was never really a fortress from MIA... as shown above, they've always had way too much competition on most significant routes, both stateside and international, to prevent them from outright dominating/manipulating the market (save possibly to the west coast, if you don't count FLL's traffic).

I'm somewhat surprised at no NAS, MBJ or PUJ. Hopefully these will come shortly.

+1 the NAS fares on AA are a killer and WN has not restarted from FLL, will be interesting to see how both react.

it is nice to see all the FLL carriers (WN,B6,NK) finally discover that MIA has been the preferred airport of South Florida.

Internationally, yes. Domestically, FLL has generated more O&D than MIA for years if not decades, pre-Covid.

Wow, BDL-MIA went from a once daily 738 to MIA on AA during the pandemic to 3x daily on AA, one each by B6/F9/NK.

Where is NK going to find the space to run these flights? I know overall traffic is down now due to international restrictions but when things return to normal and the international flights are back and the domestic flights continue as they are, where will they get the space to run such a large operation?

I agree. WN & F9 have had some fairly long gate waits, which plays hell with their need for high-utilization of aircraft. Also, the "Penalty Box" west of AA's terminal often has up to 5 inbounds waiting for gates during the late afternoon bank. Then there are international airlines resuming services every week and they need gates, too.

It is cool that NK is coming to MIA, but where will they park? I don't know.

Congrats to MIA and NK!

You love to see NK going for AA's jugular. If you've flown AA's "Oasis" and Spirit's product, they're one in the same. So why not save money and fly NK?

I'm very interested in AA's response to this, and that's if they even have the means to.

Not even! Avianca flies from four cities in Colombia to the US (BOG, MDE, CLO, BAQ). Spirit flies from seven! (BOG, MDE, CLO, BAQ, CTG, BGA, AXM)
