European airlines want EU to scrap EU261 compensation rules

Fri Jun 11, 2021 5:24 pm

Europe’s top airlines are seeking to overturn European Union compensations laws after being compelled to pay out more than 10 billion euros ($12 billion) in refunds over the last year.

The EU261 rule, which sets out reimbursements for flight cancellations and delays, was onerous even before the pandemic struck, executives said at the Airlines 4 Europe’s annual meeting Thursday.

What is ironic is the airlines on one side seek government assistance and bail-outs, yet fail to properly comply with the EU rules and withheld refunds illegally for millions of customers still.

It's moot to us in the UK but I hope the commission and more to the point the EU parliament tell them to take a hike. Super profitable Ryanair has always gone out of its way to make it as difficult as possible and other airlines whilst not as bad have rarely made it easy.

I was under the impression that EU261 had been written into law in the UK thus the protections are still there.

Quite frankly, the EU customer protection laws are one of the best aspects of the EU. They would be foolish to sacrifice all that just to appease a few struggling airlines.

The airlines are, unsurprisingly, doing their utmost to avoid refunds and compensation. Some local courts have been working 24/7 to get through the pile of lawsuits from customers who lost money.

It has but if the EU amended it but the UK kept it the same then obviously it would not effect UK consumers.
Hopefully they leave well alone if anything it needs to be tightened up especially as mentioned above the games that Ryanair and others still play to deny claimants their rightful settlements. There needs to be clear punishments for deliberate delays in refunding consumers.

An UK airline just has to bribe the Tory party with a couple of thousands pounds and the law will disappear.

The article is misleading, airlines didn't have to pay anything. They just had to give the money back for flights they didn't operate. You would expect that in any industry !

Is this issue mainly with flights that were voluntarily cancelled, or ones that were forced to be cancelled by closed borders?

At least you are still noticing the irony, here in the US it is now the expected behavior of corporations. Profits are capitalized and debts are socialized. Keep vigilant for as long as you can, corporations will do their best to lull you to sleep.

So the reason why the governments did not deduct the customer refunds from the airline request is???????
It is easy to complain about the airlines when the government who passed the laws are complicit in their avoidance, they were quick to ask for ownership percentages, so even they are taking advantage of the customer....
