Off duty DL F/A causes dvx to OKC on LAX-ATL flight

Sat Jun 12, 2021 8:20 pm

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/12/us/delta ... index.html

(CNN)An off-duty Delta Air Lines flight attendant apparently commandeered the intercom on an Atlanta-bound flight Friday night, leading to a scuffle that forced the plane to land in Oklahoma City, an airline spokesman said.

Crews are just as human as we are but this is still pretty bloody disturbing.

Will be interesting to see what comes out about this, little publicly I imagine. If this person has some sort of record of issues, it won't look good for Delta.

Its sad we are seeing so many of these crazy situations It had been categorized with all the fights in MIA and people randomly attacking flight attendants but the "off-duty Delta Air Lines flight attendant" if true is a new detail and makes this one really different.

let's say it is a psychological issue, NOT saying it is but if it is, pretty sure those records can't be publicly made known for personal protection. Unless said person commits a crime

The helmet and pads, if true, might certainly be a clue that somebody was ready to rumble.

From CNN:

“A couple of minutes after the announcement, Curlee said, the captain asked that "all able-bodied men please come to the front of the plane for an emergency."

"I feared the worst," he said. "I prayed that God would protect my family in case I was gone."

Curlee said he and a passenger next to him bolted from their seats to help but did not get very far.

"We got nowhere near because basically every man on the plane stepped up and was in the aisle," Curlee said.”

Because of this site’s rules, I can’t post what he allegedly was shouting. Let’s just say it was political slogans.

Ummm....knowing security protocols, flight deck security code, time before override kicks in, etc.

The FAA needs to act on mental health screening. Drug test are given randomly and due to reasonable suspicion, but the mental health examination is the elephant in the room. A mental health fitness screening should be a mandatory requirement in the transportation industry on an annual basis.

Like the FedEx hijack by an employee, the PSA downing by a disgruntled employee and issues at JetBlue this is an problem that needs to be addressed. Earlier in the week a AA flight returned to the field because an employee bypassed security to non rev on a flight, thank goodness they were not trying to do something other than bypass security.

As long as the pilots are alive the flight deck would not be breached. That’s as much as I will say on the topic.

There’s a reason that German Wings happened the way it did……

A little bit of hyperbole maybe? The code for each flight is never the same for many reasons, including this incident.

We sure are in a disturbing time for amount of passenger incidents, while I still believe the major off-balance of leisure vs business passengers is part of the reason. An off-duty FA is quite another level, but then again they were padded up for rumble, only to get a face-down first class experience.

What are they going to knee-jerk remove from the flying experience this time? No more non-revs...because obviously serving booze to coach passengers didn't cause this one.

Yeah the knee jerk reactions are getting tiring and obviously don't do anything.

Obviously this guy was a concern but asking ‘all able bodied men’ to respond was an unnecessary escalation

In fact the FA’s seemed to think so as well, if they weren’t able to handle it themselves they could have just asked a few passengers seated nearby for their help instead of turning this into a WWF episode

Nothing.

Change is very welcome, when it affects something and isn't just PR window dressing that doesn't address the root cause....which no airlines nor the Federal government are doing.

completely agree. Unless the FA's asked the pilots to do this (I doubt that was the case) it would have been more helpful for the pilots to focus on what they're doing as it relates to the situation at hand and let the FA's handle what's going down in the back. There are 4 FA's on the plane, it was going down in front, I imagine the other FA's could have quickly rounded up some ABP's - they may have been doing that. I'm also curious why the FA was waiting for the flexcuffs to come from the back - do they not have them at each end of the plane? All that said - every situation is different and I wasn't there so I can't know exactly what was happening.

I don’t disagree on the mental health screening, but the incidents you’ve cited are all almost a decade old or greater.

Interesting that when a passenger does something wrong the tendency here is to assume the worst, hold them accountable and throw the book at them. Now, when it is an airline employee, the comments seem to be much less harsh, almost as though nothing at all happened.

Uh ok...

You're saying the reaction to this is a little dramatic. I'm saying when an off duty FA for that airline runs up to the front of the airplane in a manic state, takes the PA and then threatens to take down the airplane (according to reports from those on board), no one is being "dramatic."

Just a guess, but I imagine the low traffic there means that quick straight-in approaches and landings are likely. Plus, I imagine they have full facilities (in-house staff, contract fuel, long rwys, airport police, etc.).

Yes... Middle of the country, and along the flight path PLUS Federal Prison Transfer Station on site at OKC..... If you pull up google earth and look almost due west of the terminal on the west side of the runway, you will find a six sided building with a long arm that goes to the tarmac with 2 air bridges. If you are a Federal Prisoner and being moved via air to another facility, chances are you will change planes in OKC. Only sad part is you don't get accrue miles. https://www.google.com/maps/@35.391163, ... a=!3m1!1e3

Was always fun watching the federal transfers at Terry Haute.

Mental health incidents are quite rare. Also you won't be able to catch most of those individuals by mental health checks. The GWI9525 first officer passed one of the most strictest psychological assessments in aviation, but still had severe mental health issues. Those mental health checks would produce a huge amount of "false" positives, also many people suffering from psychological conditions are able to hide the issue. Those kind of mental health screenings would produce a lot of stress for the pilots without a major benefit.

When the Feds have no more room at a prison, they will place the inmate at another location and then shuttle them from their "base" location to their court appearance location, then return them. The Fed Marshall's that accompany them spend a lot of time in the air and its not unusual to see multiples of them holding 1K status. Only problem is they are sandwiched in regular coach seats and cannot enjoy the perks of membership.
