Thu Jun 17, 2021 10:28 pm

Air Transat will launch MIA-YUL December 14, another new carrier entering the Miami market. what other airlines could come in and touch their foot in Miami?

Interesting

In terms of Canadian carriers, maybe Flair?

They tried a whole bunch of US routes a few years before the pandemic but axed all of them. Most of them didn’t make money, the few that were worth it (Edmonton-Orlando/St Pete if I remember correctly) ended up being cancelled since they were operated with a wet-leased aircraft from Smartwings who ended the lease agreement early due to the MAX grounding. Flair was just a bit too small at the time and couldn’t compete with AC Rouge/Swoop.

Seeing as Flair has a much larger domestic network and fleet now, perhaps now is the right time to have MIA/USA a shot.

Don’t be surprised if you see Swoop trying this market out too.

Possibly, but seeing as they’ve just announced SFB and PIE, they’d most likely end up at FLL if they want to serve Miami.

Seeing as how many airlines are rushing into miami, I wouldn’t be surprised, thought FLL would be more likely.

Interesting, Transat will also fly YUL-FLL Daily starting just before the December holidays. YUL-RSW is also loaded in the schedule as well. Really beefing up their Florida service from YUL.

YUL | 16:15 | MIA | 19:55 | Sunday (A321N), Tuesday Friday (A321)
MIA | 21:25 | YUL | 00:45 | Sunday (A321N), Tuesday, Friday (A321)

YUL | 06:30 | RSW | 10:10 | Sunday | A321N
RSW | 11:30 | YUL | 14:55 | Sunday | A321N

YUL | 17:05 | RSW | 20:45 | Thursday | A321
RSW | 22:05 | YUL | 01:30 | Thursday | A321

How many Canadians go to Miami-Dade ? Broward seems more their type of place. Unless these flights are bringing and taking home cruise passengers.

Transat's cruise packages leave from FLL, they've been flying there for years, although they may offer cruises out of Miami this year. Personally, I try to fly into MIA whenever I head down to the Keys, a lot closer than FLL. Miami also caters to a younger crowd going down for club/party weekends. Plus that whole area is basically one market, I've flown into PBI before and driven down to the Keys because it was $150 cheaper per person than MIA or FLL.

I don't see SAN loaded anywhere in the schedule, although I think they had previsouly annouced YUL-SAN before Covid. YUL-MSY is back loaded again in the schedule for 2 weekly begining in November.

YUL-MEX is loaded x3 weekly but only from March 31 to April 29th. Transat usually operates charter flights for Mexican farmers working feilds in Canada for the summer, and returns them home around October. They may have decided to offer some of these flights for sale as air only to try and make some extra money.

YUL | 23:00 | MEX | 03:20 +1 | Sun, Tue, Thu | A321neo
MEX | 04:40 | YUL | 10:40 | Mon, Wed, Fri | A321neo

I've noticed this spring that Sunwing has done a number of GUA-YUL farm labour flights as well as MEX-YUL. I believe at one point I saw an AC-333 do a few similar rotations along with the occasional Air Transat flights as well.

The Hollywood area has been a favorite destination for Francophone Canadians for many years. As a kid it was my first exposure to seeing speedo/bikini style swimwear on men as they dress more European in terms of style, especially the older crowd back then in the 80s.

Hollywood is immediately to the south of the airport, so Miami makes a good complimentary destination, and picks up the traffic that isn't headed to Hollywood.

The YUL - MEX rotations feature a unfriendly schedule that will appeal to only the most price sensitive of those in the price sensitive marketplace.

When I flew a Mexicana 757 YUL-MEX a number of years ago almost everybody on the flight was Mexican.

Were they flying to FLL for proximity, or because FLL was where the low cost flights landed? Split ops add cost but maybe enough passengers favor MIA strongly enough to pay $X per segment more.

Do we think the US/Canada border will actually open to tourists or are we just playing fantasy network planner? And if so when? Because a lot has to happen between now and then if it’s not just the latter

Does it? Canadians can (and for a long time have been able to) enter to the US by air... they just had to do the quarantine when they got back. That's already on schedule to be relaxed.

If the flights are aimed at catering to Canadian O&D/POS, then there's really not much that needs to change at all.

Flights to Miami/South Florida cater to the Canadian migrant population. Montreal has maintained service to Fort Lauderdale through the entire pandemic without interruption. And the border is open to tourists, just Canada has very strict rules upon return.

The border is not open to tourists by air. Only residents and permanent citizens can enter
