Security Scare at EWR

Mon Jul 05, 2021 4:06 pm

This morning at Newark's Terminal C, a passenger exited through a secure door causing alarms to go off and caused mass panic among passengers in the terminal. The incident caused many UA flights from Terminal C to be delayed. The offending passenger was detained by Port Authority Police.

Why are people so incredibly dumb.

I don’t know what is more stupid, throwing coins in the engine for good luck or opening a door that says “do not open or an alarm will go off”

People running down stairs was potentially more dangerous than someone exiting an emergency exit door. The whole theater that is TSA is just bizarre and doesn't make much sense. In today's world, probably every exit has a camera on it, why not use that to figure out the problem?

Sounds like the airport knew what was going on but someone happened to shout run and then crowd mentality took over. What a mess.

Very strange. I've been in airports numerous times when a door alarm has gone off. Never once seen it incite a panic. Even a fire alarm usually takes prompting for people to react to.

Does EWR also use prosegur for security contracting? I know they do at LGA and at least from a passenger perspective they are far from helpful and are a bit useless.

Wouldn't be surprised if part of the mass problem at EWR was caused by the lackluster security contractors that the port authority have contracted out.

Is this what was usually called "hysteria"?

Telling people already panicking to run is not advisable. The chance of injury is quite high in a stampede.

Seriously? It’s literally the first link of the OP.

No one actually reads the threads anymore. They skim and then try to get a pithy quip in.
