EK205 emergency landing in Milan

Wed Jul 14, 2021 12:00 am

I just saw this and don’t see it posted.

“An Emirates Boeing 777-300ER returned in emergency to Milan Malpensa immediately after take-off due to a hailstorm in the area that broke several windows and damaged the fuselage in several places. Passengers and crew are unharmed. The landing occurred after a previous failed attempt. Flight EK205 – bound for New York – took off from the Lombard airport at 16:22, according to the indications provided by Flightradar24. At that moment – show the weather data – bad weather was breaking down in the province of Varese with strong winds and a violent hailstorm.”

Not even on Av Herald yet. Still, hail's no joke. Sometimes it doesn't even buff out.

Pics from Twitter.

Both windscreens cracked, hail penetrated the wing root covers, and destroyed the nose. I am sure there is more.

More pics:
nacelle and leadings edges damaged, so you can likely assume the empennage and vertical stabilizer leading edges are the same.

Probably able to leave some dents in an as is condition as will be allowable damage per the SRM, some parts will be repairable, others will require replacement. As this 777 is around 13 years old the use of used serviceable parts should be a consideration rather than new to keep costs reasonable. Pure speculation, but somewhere in the region of USD2.0 million to repair everything with the inlet cowls probably costing the most to deal with.

A couple of summers ago, I had to work out of Milan. I flew in and out of MXP around 10 times, and had used the airport many times before and after that summer including an EK A380 to/from DXB. Its a lovely airport to climb out from...sad to hear about this incident.

Unfortunately severe hail from May to August is common in this part of Italy- I was near Milan yesterday and it was bad, but I've seen worse 2 years ago.

I wonder why weather radars cannot prevent these encounters with hailstorms. Is technology lacking yet this part?

Weather radar cannot detect hail, but it is very good at detecting the weather systems that are likely to create hail. This is where judgement comes into play. When you decide to penetrate a severe weather system you are essentially tossing dice at the craps table.

Is it the captain (or other crew) which decides whether to go or stay in such cases? Can the airport authorities refuse permission for a departure? In retrospect this EK departure should have been delayed.

Normally the crew, ATC have nothing available that can detect hail. In reality all the crew will see on a radar is an area of heavy rain.

Before returning to service, do the engines need to be inspected from the hail ingested?

It’ll be out of service for much longer than that.

And let’s not forget Air Transat wrote off an L-1011 after a similar hail encounter.
