New livery for American Airlines?

Sat Jul 17, 2021 7:16 pm

787-8 N877BF rolled out of paint at PAE a few days ago sporting an all white fuselage rather than the usual grey. Can see the white contrast with the light grey 'bar' under the rear door between the red and dark grey sections.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/51315332217/

Credit to Nick Dean for the photo.

(I should add that it being N877BF is only an assumption based on the fact that the other AA 788 frames at PAE have all recently been seen fully painted in the normal AA livery whereas N877BF was last photographed in December unpainted, wearing sticker N5023Q).

Looks sharp. Makes the flag on the tail stand out more. The grey on the engines is a bit of an odd choice though, IMO it doesn't add much. I think it would be cleaner with white engines.

Reminds me of the AB6's and the ex-QQ MD-90's that went through this evolution in the 1969-2013 livery.

Hoping for something a bit more radical. Really not a fan of the current livery. :yuck:

It's been pointed out by a friend that the paintwork doesn't seem to be finished as the fuselage joins are visible and messy around the door frames too. Not sure what's going on then.

Would be cool if they painted the engines red. Those would really pop against the white fuselage, like United’s blue engines.

Certainly appears unfinished, not sure why though. Even a special livery would have rolled out more finished than that if it is just waiting for decals.

Is anyone else surprised American is still taking delivery of the 787-8?

No because they ordered them two years ago.

Maybe it's just the angle but the front gear tires look oddly larger than the main tires.

The front tires you see are those of the tow vehicle, not the actual aircraft.

Was wondering about that, difficult to see all the detail on a small screen.

I agree....very bizaarre. Unless, as someone pointed out, there is some special livery in the works
and the decals are on back order

It was the opposite situation with those birds. White tails and grey bodies as opposed to this.

It’ll get the standard grey soon. As far as adding more red, that would require a bell or horn and likely a clown nose.

Really hope this isn't an actual change and just some anomaly. I like the AA livery, and this white fuselage looks like a cheapening of something in a way that really doesn't work. Makes a striking and cohesive livery look unfinished or like a temporary lease in with some decals slapped on it.

The grey could be lightened a little bit but I don't like the white, I think it looks ugly especially with the grey engines.

Nowadays companies and brands like free publicity (float it, and let the public run with it - think Ben A and J Lo) its about publicity for whatever reason. This plane being made visible could be NOTHING, or to test public opinion on the lighter shade. Perhaps its cheaper?, perhaps Doug wants his stamp on the airline before he departs at some point?, perhaps corporate polling suggests its already dated, or will be with the new era coming soon. Perhaps, just perhaps its nothing ;-)

For what its worth, its a nice refresh shade and like others, reminds me of the A300s they had.

Speaking of new liveries, Delta is in desperate need of a new livery...the current one was dated from day one.

They’re repainting the fleet with a new type of non-mica gray paint starting with the 737s. Supposed reduce the weight of a 737 by 62LBS and save AA 1 million gallons of fuel per year. It is a bit lighter in shade but I’m not sure if that 787 is in the new “Silver Eagle” paint.

“Starting this month, as aircraft approach their regularly scheduled paint refresh date, American will begin repainting them with a new, non-mica gray paint that looks nearly identical to what is soaring across the skies today, but is less expensive, lighter, more fuel efficient and better for the environment.”

The American Livery has the fuselage and nacelles in the same color, previously Silver Mica now Silver Eagle, obviously this plane does not have that. Maybe just the base coat has been applied to fuselage, although not sure the logic, but I highly doubt this is the final product.

That started last year. There are already 787-9s in the revised livery.

They did. Then they switched back.

Now that Boeing's changed the rear of the aircraft for increased commonality with the -9, there's not all that much cost to them to produce it, and the airline is clearly happy with the economics of the -8 on some routes.

They arodered them to replace some smaller planes & also got boing to make them with the 787-9/9 changed structure components.

If they change the livery, this cannot be the final livery. All exits are not painted properly. I don’t think that they would be allowed to operate like it is show on the picture.

As a recently retired employee I never could come to terms with the new scheme, with the exception of the tail, which I think is stunning lit up at night. Everything else about it has cheapened the image (which, I guess, is appropriate !). I disliked the grey very very much. But if they were going to keep it I always thought the word American would look much better in a dark blue. If they are indeed going to get rid of that atrocious grey, then perhaps testing some shades of dark blue for the name. While you will never get a classier look than the prior bare metal scheme, I think it’s interesting that UA, by slightly changing some colors, made their current livery look great.

I love the current scheme. So distinctive, so brave, so American.

This iteration just reeks of tinkering and compromise.

What I liked about the titles is they had this “neon lights” look with the white outline.

The grey they use just seems to make the fuselage lack much color. Why is it grey again? You’d think American Airlines is the red white and blue airline, shouldn’t the titles reflect that and not just that skewed pinstripe?

Also the remedy should haVe been to keep the old logo where the new logo currently stands on the plane, not jumble it on the tail and have two logos

Not sure but I remember seeing this same photo with a tag stating that it had just come out of fuselage rework and the main section of fuselage was not painted with topcoat until the work was carried out so that may explain the base white fuselage color. The AA scheme has been changed but only to a lighter color of gray on the fuselage as the paint pigment is quite a bit lighter than the current darker gray. I may stand corrected though this is what I saw on the title on another post on another site, can`t remember where though otherwise I. would post a link. (Sorry moderators) Hope this may help

But why the titles if it’s missing a top coat?

Weird. They just announced a new paint scheme this year, saying it would appear almost identical to the old one, but was made with more environmentally friendly paint. (no mica in it.)

Does anyone have the photo of the hybrid logo AA was considering and allowed employees to vote on at the end of 2013? There was a lot of resistance to the flag tail at first so American proposed a hybrid scheme where the tail would remain the same with AA and the previous eagle in between the letters at the top. I actually thought it looked really cool even though it doesn't sound like it would and was surprised employees voted on the flag tail. Some even claimed the vote was staged. I looked recently for a picture of it online but couldn't find it.
