Insane Cockpit Video of 737-300 Landing

Wed Aug 04, 2021 5:47 pm

What on earth were the pilots doing? And can anyone identify where this is? As stated in the article, the craft is PK-YGW, flying for an Indonesian cargo airline.

According to AvHerald, the landing was in Paro, and the aircraft was delivering Covid-19 Vaccines.

This pretty much violates every industry standard safety protocol in the book. Double yikes.

I can't believe what I've just seen. Two random people picked up from the street could have landed this poor plane better.

I’d say that looks like one of my worse my flight simulator landings, but only the ones when I’ve had a few beers and in a rush to go to bed.

It would help to know which airport it was and what the weather conditions were at the time. It is Indonesia after all and it was a cargo flight thankfully. I almost got the sense and impression the pilots were going through the motions as if were not something they hadn't done before at that particular airport.

The airport was Paro, Bhutan. Runway 33.

It seems like the most deadly thing the captain did was maintain a low power setting despite an increasing sink rate and steep bank angle. He doesn't really add significant power to arrest the way-too-rapid descent until after the ground prox is going off and below 50 feet. Was that the first officer who said "power!"? Good call for sure as that thrust increase before touchdown probably kept the plane in one piece. Overall, though, this is completely embarrassing for the crew.

Another lovely video of this thrilling combination: Boeing 737 + Indonesian airline.

This airline (Tri MG) have written off at least two 737s in hard landing incidents.

To be fair, Paro is very difficult landing. Only turboprops and Bae-146's were able to operate there for years. Even Druk Air only uses A319's now.

As stated above , this is paro which features a very unique and challenging approach to say the least. Either way this approach is beyond unstable , landed with a huge cross load

I thought Paro was one of those airports that requires a special licence and training to operate in to? I saw a video a few months back of some guys flying a business jet into the same airport and getting themselves into the same unstable approach situation.

Well if it’s that difficult of an approach, you certainly don’t have your phone in one hand filming it! I have no problem flying a 737MAX, but the carriers from that region are on my no-fly list.

I’m not making any claims of good flying but Paro is uniquely challenging, and almost a one shot deal before diverting because the “circuit” goes round a lot of valleys before coming back around for another go. I would say this crew’s failure is if anything to even be attempting to land here, and that having committed, not done a terrible job if this is indeed a first effort. A squeeze of power and a more aggressive flare in the last two seconds and he would have had it made

Thanks for adding some perspective to this thread. Easy to be critical. My only concern was the guy on the right holding a cell phone during a dangerous stage of flight.

I guess because of the mountainous region, the pilots were unable to go around from their lousy attempt at an approach/final, but still doesn't mean they should have just been acting like that. Wonder how much damage they caused to the plane and if it'll be investigated.

Paro, it is a special authorisation required airport. Very difficult approach, especially if you are not used to manoeuvring at the slow speeds required to meet the turn radius.

This is then”proper” approach to Paro, one of the world’s most dangerous airports, by people that do it every single day. Note they aren’t even lined up to the runway until they are 75-100 feet off of the deck.

If I understand correctly, that is a circle approach. So from PR708 you over fly the airport, go up the valley, make a 180 degree turn, and come back and land opposite direction of the approach onto RY15.

The Captain was in the right seat. Right before landing you can see the 4 stripes and he also has his hand (not hand because his other one was holding his phone) on the yoke and probably should have taken over before the pilot flying broke the airframe but he didn't seem to concerned since he was saying "Be carful, don't worry right at the beginning of the video.

I'm guessing the pilot flying was training to get his private license??? Who knows maybe getting you private in a 737 is possible in Indonesia?

What in the world are you talking about? In irregular operations it is not uncommon to send a crew with two captains.

Not correct...for some time other models are being used there such as boeing 737-700 and Airbus 320.
For your info the other bhutanese airline besides Druk Air, talking about Tashi Air(Bhutan Airlines), leased for some time an european A320 from Small Planet wich used to have european pilots.

And that Small Planet A320 was based in Paro for some time.

I tough only a few pilots are qualified to operate in Paro. I would be surprised if TriMG give special training to land there. I also thought Paro is restricted to a few types, I am surprised to see a 733 there

No that is a RNAV(RNP) approach, no circling is allowed at the airport. Same approach flown with an A319 to the same runway end https://youtu.be/SbLHah4XUwk

The airport s a special authorization required, that means normally a simulator and physical entry with a another pilot authorized. The captain in the RHS would have been a training captain.

I do wonder given the aggressiveness of the flying if these guys are ex-military. Either way, I very seriously doubt a low experience crew pulled off that kind of low speed, low altitude maneuvering.

To get a hint of how tricky it was, notice that the yoke was fairly hard left long before the maximum right bank was reached - he actually was anticipating quite a while ahead of time how slowly the roll momentum of the aircraft would be reversed by the ailerons at those speeds in a way I can't imagine a pilot without lots of hands-on experience at low speeds would recognize as necessary, especially not at 7300 feet elevation. Yet even with as much anticipation as we see, he over-corrected.

There is some more description of the airport and also a video from the ground of a Drukair A319 landing at the link below. I think the Tri-MG flight was a runway 33 approach, while the Drukair is runway 15, but the geography looks almost mirrored either way - there's a mountain shoulder to turn around that seems to force the pilot to turn past the runway centerline and correct back. It came in similar - but I don't think got as far off of centerline. I get the impression the Drukair A319 flew the approach pretty close to nominal, where as the Tri-MG flight seems like it began its final turn late, and perhaps should have aborted before the video even began.

We can't actually see the PF's beer in the video, but we know the PM was not holding it because he had the phone in his hand.

And PF had his right hand on the throttle, so clearly he did that landing with index and middle finger wrapped around the beer, while ring and pinky finger were managing the yoke. :stirthepot:

Is anyone familiar with the 737 Classic flight deck? After they slam down, two red lights at the center above where the EICAS would be light up. What does that mean and is it normal?
