2021 NFL Charters

Fri Aug 06, 2021 1:09 am

It is that time of year again to list the NFL charters. Did the Cowboys use Atlus this year instead of AA?

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/GTI ... /KLAX/KCLE

I am guessing the Steelers drove from PIT to CAK.

The Cowboy's return to training camp in Oxnard via LAX. The Cowboy's 744 departed from CAK instead of CLE.

Pretty sure they flew AA out to Oxnard from DFW, but looks like they used Atlas for the HOF game. Could have been related to the AA/NK meltdown of last week? I know they’re almost always on AA

My bet is on the size of the traveling party; preseason rosters are large, training staff, coaches, etc. They used N263SG which was the bird that flew the Cardinals most of the time last season, used to see it parked out at SkyHarbor if no charters were booked between games. Needless information the seating is F 10; J 143 and Y 36.

Steelers on a DL 763 over to PHL tomorrow: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KPIT/KPHL

Titans are also on a DL 763 into ATL on Thursday for the Falcons matchup: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KBNA/KATL

Buffalo is on a DL 763 with a quick hop over to DTW to face Lions: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KBUF/KDTW

The Cowboys are back with AA, flying tonight over to Dallas https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL ... /KPHX/KDFW. According to the link the boys flew out of Santa Barbara to PHX on a 321neo.

Atlas 747-400, probably N263SG. N322SG was en route to MSY with the Cardinals out of PHX but turned around over Texas upon receiving the news about the game cancellation, due to the hurricane

They’ve been on DL metal for awhile, I noticed a weird thing where last year it was DL aircraft with a HA flight number.

I thought DAL and UAL were pretty evenly split (about 12 teams each). GTI has 4 teams, AAL has 3 or 4 teams, and Hawaiian has the Raiders. AAL used to do more, but I think the crew shortage and aircraft supply meant they had to cut back on their charter business. NFL teams prefer widebody aircraft due to cargo needs and passenger separation needs (3 linemen are not sitting together in the same row), and there's just not that many charter only operators with widebody aircraft.

A witnessed something cool on Saturday at IAD. There's a drive along the cargo buildings at IAD. If you go far enough there's a parking lot that's never used. That's where charters park and on Saturday I watched as members of the Washington Football Team parked their cars and walked through an open gate to their waiting UA 772 on the way to ATL.

That sometimes happens. It just depends on the demand for widebody aircraft by the airline and/or proximity to a hub that could use that aircraft. I'm sure fuel prices are a factor in that decision too, because while the negotiated price for the flight might include 1-2 reposition ferries to/from the hubs, it wouldn't include any bonus ferries for aircraft utilization.

At the NFL level, every team will utilize a spot away from the terminal for loading/offloading. They can drive the buses and trucks (for cargo/equipment) right up to the aircraft. Security is often done at the practice facility where teams take the buses from. Washington's practice facility is just a couple miles north of Dulles in Ashburn, meaning they love to fly in/out of IAD, regardless of whether or not United had a hub there.

The league pays for these charters, and in the past, the NFL has favored Virgin Atlantic, but I don't know if they will be the provider of choice this season. Expect those flights to be either Wednesday or Thursday.

Virgin Atlantic has an agreement with the NFL to fly the teams to London.

“ The National Football League in the UK today renewed two exciting partnerships; a three-year extension with Just For Men and a new five-year deal with Virgin Atlantic. The Virgin agreement sees the airline confirmed as the league's Official Charter Airline Partner in the UK until 2025, while Just For Men will continue to be the Official Hair Care Sponsor of the NFL in the UK.”

Yes, I realize that as I live nearby. Was just sharing that I witnessed it. However, the players and staff drove to the parking lot in their cars. I assume security was conducted by the boarding stairs.

I forgot about Virgin Atlantic and their agreement with the NFL. I remember a few years ago when the Giants went to London to play (I think the Bears - don't quote me on who they played), and Virgin Atlantic had a A340 EWR charter at the "Amelia" hardstand to pick up the Giants.

I didn't look at the total NFL schedule as I wrote, but are there 3 London games this year? (The Jacksonville Jaguars always to to London every year)

So I will get to see the new A350-1000 (more than likely parked at the North Area, since construction / demo is happening) when the Jets leave for London.

I had pictures of when the Panthers took Virgin from CLT-LHR for their game. I’m trying to find them and not having much luck.

And years ago when the Jaguars played the Panthers instead of the Jaguars going back to Jacksonville they flew Virgin from CLT-LHR.

Atlas would keep 747's parked overnight during Bills games. UA never parks a plane overnight at BNIA. They often go to Pitt or an NYC area airport.

I am assuming its cheaper to park the plane at a Hub vs keeping it overnight at BNIA. Which makes no sense at all if you are the Buffalo airport.

When UA brought in an NFL team last time here in CLT they used a 777 and then ferried out to IAD this was on a Saturday and then ferried it back to CLT on Sunday.

And this means they had two additional landing fees so I don’t think it’s done for cost. Probably used as a spare in case a 777 goes mechanical.

While other carriers usually leave them overnight.

Anyone know why so many teams upgraded to 777's? (Denver Broncos have always used a United 767-400 until this year) I assume aircraft availability?

Appears to be mostly UA upgrading teams to 777. Might have something to do with where widebodies are currently based out of and current usage of 777s. I think with soft European demand, I think UA is running most of their 767s out of EWR (why NYG probably took a 764 this week). 767 fleet overall may be running thin between maintenance checks due bringing the 764s out of storage and cabin upgrades on the 763s. Pure speculation, but I bet that 's the reason.

I am reading that the Jags/Dolphins are expected to fly out later this afternoon, but I cannot find inbound reposition aircraft into either JAX or FLL.
