SQ restarts 5th Freedom SIN-TPE-LAX flights

Wed Aug 11, 2021 11:45 am

As the title says, SQ will restart flights to LAX via TPE from 25th August, serving 3 weekly onboard the long haul A350s. But due to Covid restrictions on transiting passengers, one can’t fly this route between Singapore and Los Angeles.

It’s currently filed till 30th October 2021. This is the third new “fifth freedom” flights opened by the SIA Group, after SQ’s Copenhagen and Rome route, and low-cost subsidiary Scoot’s Athens – Berlin routing.

With Starlux on its way will be interesting how 4 airlines will operate the route in the future.

Remember there's increased demand as Taiwan is in the US VISA Waiver program like Singapore.

Will be interesting to see if this will last beyond Covid, freight seems to be part of the reason for this new addition

IIRC, I don't think the 77W ever operated this route. Back in 2008, the 77W was indeed planned for the then-SQ28/27 but I think the route got canned before that happened. Post the 744s, it was only ever operated by the 777-200ER

Pretty sure it was the 747. Remember the SQ006 crash?

The last 5th freedom routes SQ flew from LAX were indeed on the 77W, but neither was via TPE. They last flew SIN-ICN-LAX and SIN-NRT-LAX. SIN-NRT-LAX was on a 388 at an earlier point as well.

This route add stuns me because Singapore has been so keen on adding nonstop SIN-USA before the pandemic. And by the way these are the same flight numbers that were used for the morning LAX-SIN departure which has since been discontinued.

I think it was around momentarily. I swear I can recall reading a trip report on here c. 2007 covering LAX-TPE on the 77W where they gave out free models as part of the inaugural 77W, as well as seeing a few pics floating around on Flickr of the SQ 77W parked at the old TBIT.

SQ uses the 77W on flights from SIN-NRT-LAX and SIN-ICN-LAX. SIN-TPE-LAX was never operated by the 77W.

My bad - I do apologise for the incorrect information! So as it turns out, it did indeed operate between TPE and LAX for a while.

It was indeed a 77E. I flew this route in 2007. The seats were the Spacebeds.

Haha so many opinions, I’ll add mine and to at is that the 77W was definitely used for a short time on the TPE-LAX route before it was cut.

Interesting add.

Great to see the resumption of fifth freedom flights and capture revenue opportunities beyond Singapore with its ostensibly still closed borders.

I have flow it on both 77E and 77W: 77E I flew LAX-TPE-SIN, while on 77W just SIN-TPE (I remember that flight well because across the aisle there was an American woman who started drinking straight after takeoff, was singing loudly half way during the flight and fell asleep drunk just before landing in TPE and still had to continue flight to LAX).

Sad.

Was definitely hoping we'd get both nonstops back, and the A359ULR back as well.
Seems the cargo is such that they're keeping standard A359s flying into LAX.... the only time I don't like seeing them. :(

New luxury boutique airline Starlux is launching flights to Singapore on September 23rd - let the fare war begin! :box:

Interesting turn of event, but why would they pick TPE? SIN-ICN-LAX would be a better fit, especially with OZ getting taken over by KE....

Glad that their 5th freedom flights are coming back slowly though. I hope SIN-ICN-SFO or YVR comes back soon. I, for one, used their ICN-SFO and LAX flights all the time, and it has been not the same without SQ. :ouch:

I'm pretty sure this is not the first time SQ is going against low cost competition. I'm not sure these 2 airlines will even be competing for the same customer base.
Looking at Starlux's destinations they seem to cater to the leisure passenger more than anything.

Simple: Taiwan is in Singapore's air travel bubble whereas S.Korea is not. And TPE is also a *A hub.

Despite their current route network, dictated mostly by the pandemic and the need to keep some cashflow, I'd be hard-pressed to define Starlux "low cost competition"; it's not AirAsia/JetStar, not for the hard product nor for the price; and Scoot is already on the same market, so I would not expect a fare war on the route as Starlux would be competing with them rather than with SQ/BR at that point.

The main difference, to SQ advantage, is the *A FF base at both SIN and TPE, hence I agree that Starlux will be trying to go after a slightly different market.

Cheers,
MN

Could've been a one-off swap. After the 77E, TPE was served with A333s. 77W is too much plane for TPE. It could've also been a 773 swap.

I'm aware (hence quoting that very thing). Though wasn't sure the other poster realized that OZ was still independent and still in Star, at least foreseeably.

I'm sure the ULRs will be back, just not feasible at present.

In terms of visiting aircraft is the A359 really such a downgrade on the ULRs?

The 77W was SIN-TPE-LAX not long before this route was axed. I got off in TPE but the flight continued to LAX. Earlier in the thread there was a link to materials on the first 77W flight SIN-TPE-LAX. The A333 were SIN-TPE only. For a while there was also a SIN-TPE-KIX route on 77E: I flew that the day after SQ006 crashed and saw all the wreckage on the runway when we departed from TPE to KIX.

SQ has already given the specific reason: even disregarding the freighter services, LAX does significantly more pax-belly cargo than SFO for them.

The -ULRs' forward cargo bay must be sealed, so that's a significant volume limitation. As four of the 9V-SM* series A359s and all of the 9V-SJ* series have the wing twist and are capable of the same 280tonne MTOW as the -ULRs, they've been dedicated to the LAX nonstop, while offering significantly increased cargo capacity over the -ULRs. The -ULRs have unfortunately been assigned to SFO.

I was hoping though, that with two 5th freedom services up and running again, plus the dedicated freighter services, that SQ would finally return the -ULRs to the LAX route. :(

MrHMSH wrote:

Yes. Less premium capacity.

Before SQ got rid of the 744s, I operated the SIN-TPE-LAX flights several times. The loads both ways were just about 100%. Granted there were quite a few VFR travellers, but the amount of belly cargo loaded certainly made up the lower fares. SQ regarded that route as a money maker. I am not surprised at all it was reinstated.

Well, I worked for SQ for a number of years as a 744 Captain until I went to work in the ME for a VVIP operation.

13 years? I don't think it was that long ago.

Oh dear, not the best sight to see when taking off or landing, even more so the aircraft was from same airline company. Anyhow, it seems like SQ Group has an affinity for intra-Asia routes, especially TPE-KIX route, it was operated for many years before it moved on to Scoot. SIN-BKK-SEL-(YVR/SFO), SIN-HKG-TPE, SIN-TPE-KIX, SIN-TPE-Tokyo (not sure which airport), SIN-FUK-HIJ (Hiroshima), SIN-TPE-SFO, SIN-BKK-KIX. via Silkair SIN-VTE-LPQ, SIN-CEB-KLO vv, SIN-REP-DAD I might have forget some others. Sad that most of these are no longer in operation.

Maybe low cost was a bad term but these days there doesn't seem to be a big difference. I guess I should have said "leisure oriented carrier".
FYI, JetBlue and FlyDubai also has full-flat business class seats on narrow-body aircraft and they are a low cost carriers.

People are confusing “low cost” with “low fare”. Airlines like JetBlue, FlyDubai, and Starlux may be low cost compared to some of their competitors but they operate a hybrid model intended to capture premium traffic.

Starlux by no means is low cost, or hybird for that matter. Their target markets are well off travellers, and those who don't mind to pay extra dollars for comfort. The cabin products exude luxury and premium and their fare is not very cheap tbh. Their main home competitors are CI and BR.

I assume you mean "A340-500" everywhere you had "A350-500"...

And this doesn't seem quite accurate. By the time SQs had 388s, they weren't flying the LAX-TPE route anymore (LAX-TPE last flew in 2008, and the 388 didn't enter service until 2011).

Add to that that it's A350-900ULR, not -9000

Also, the A388 didn't begin SIN-NRT-LAX until after the A345 nonstop ended in 2013.

You're right, my bad.

That was when they switched from the 60J A388s to the 86J birds at LAX, and made such a big advertisement deal out of the "new A380s." Confused the two.

It was indeed a 77E. I flew this route in 2007. The seats were the Spacebeds.

As I recall the stop at TPE was only about an hour...I still remembering hearing the announcement over and over at LAX, "passengers for Singapore flight 29 please proceed to the departure gate for an on-time departure". The announcement started about three hours before the flight departure time.

That will be a lot of SQ seats into LAX. The daily SQ38 non-stop and SQ12 via NRT, and now this one 3x weekly via TPE. Awesome!
