Above are the charters for the NFL teams this week. All of them, sans the Chicago Bears, have a widebody. My question is, why do the NFL teams get a widebody, but seemingly have less personnel to send to games. College teams have a larger roster, more coaches and trainers, cheer squad, and many times some wealthy boosters or the band are allowed to travel with the team. I am quite astonished to see some college teams travelling cross country on a A320 or 737, especially considering the size of some of the players. Do the airlines charge more to the NFL teams? Do NFL teams request widebodies? Or is it the same price for all football team and the airline makes the decision on what equipment to send to pick them up?

FYI, there's a seperate thread for NFL Charters:

Most likely. South Bend to downtown Chicago can take as little as 90 minutes (though traffic can be really bad on I-80 between NW IN and I-294 in IL). Looks like Wisconsin drove from Madison, that's only about a 2.5 hour drive.

Looks like Hawaii did charter Hawaiian to fly them all the way back to HNL after flying into PHX on HA and chartering WN to ELP. Aircraft operated a revenue flight for HA to OAK, ferried to ELP, and flew ELP-OAK-HNL as a charter with a fuel stop in OAK for Hawaii: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/HAL ... /KELP/KOAK

Makes absolute sense that ND would drive to chicago from South Bend.. You'd spend more time driving to South Bend airport getting on the charter flying unloading in Chicago (and driving to the team hotel) than it would take to drive from south bend directly to the team hotel in Chicago... It would be the equivalent to the New York Jets flying EWR-PHL for a game in Philly.

It is my understanding that the iAero 737-400 went tech in Tallahassee so a 737-800 was ferried up from Miami to take Louisville back home.

A21Ns have an approximate range of 3500nmi. The distance between ELP and HNL is 2803nmi. Wouldn't that enable the charter to bypass OAK completely? I am not a pilot so I'm assuming you don't want to practically risk running on empty in the middle of the Pacific given that weight, wind resistance, jet stream, etc., can vary and could affect fuel consumption. Am I correct?

There might be other factors in play. Football teams tend to travel with a fair amount of cargo (player's leisure bags, uniforms and pads, practice equipment, etc), so it's not just the weight of the personnel to be considered. We're starting to enter the time of the year where winds get stronger, and going westbound, you're flying into the wind. ELP is approx 4,000 ft above sea level and is a desert climate - if it's a hot day, may not be able to get MTOW out of there. If HA promised a nonstop and was unable to deliver, that could be logistically challenging trying to coordinate a fuel stop and staying within crew legalities at the last minute, not to mention inconveniencing the customer. Probably better to plan the tech stop ahead of time than take the risk.

Today and Tomorrow - Virginia flew down to FLL today on Sun Country for their matchup with Miami tonight: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KCHO/KFLL

Houston onboard a United 738 over to TUL tomorrow to face Tulsa: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KIAH/KTUL
—————
Friday - Arkansas will have to fly into ATL instead of AHN for the trip to UGA due to their partnership with United and the runway length at AHN, they’re onboard a UA 737-900 over to ATL: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KXNA/KATL

Michigan is onboard a Delta 757-200 out of DTW over to MSN to face Wisconsin: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KDTW/KMSN

Tennessee will ditch the 757-200 for a Delta A321 this weekend for the flight over to STL, instead of COU due to runway construction, to face Mizzou: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KTYS/KSTL

Pitt will be on a Delta 737-900 down to ATL to face Georgia Tech: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KPIT/KATL

USC on a United 757-300 up to DEN to face Colorado: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KLAX/KDEN

FlightAware isn’t showing the intermediary leg, which will fly the team, but Auburn will fly out of CSG on a Delta 737-800 over to LFT for LSU. Aircraft will ferry to BTR after the game. I’m guessing that this is due to hotel options in Baton Rouge post-hurricane: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL8892

Thanks for filling in the Mizzou vs. Tenn update for me; at least now I don't have to waste my trip time to the airport just to plane-spot the visiting team's charter plane that won't arrive at my home town's airport!

I wonder what aircraft equipment ODU will use to fly out of ORF to ELP tomorrow? They play Saturday at the Sun Bowl against UTEP.

Is this W. Mich vs Buffalo? Off they would fly into SYR unless G4 gave them an offer they couldn't refuse to avoid ferrying the aircraft from BUF

Not totally sure. I’ll do a big recap later today and will dig through to see what their deal is for today. After a cursory check at AZO, it looks like an iAero 737-300 ferried to AZO last night, which is the airport WMU usually uses, so they might be on that 737 to BUF later today.

Yesterday:
Iowa was on Allegiant yesterday over to BWI to face Maryland today: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KCID/KBWI
————————
Today:
Indeed, it looks like Western Michigan is on the iAero 737-300 that ferried up to AZO last night for the flight over to Buffalo (seems like it was just a ferry from GRR to SYR for the Syracuse flight): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWQ ... /KAZO/KBUF

Charlotte is flying on Allegiant out of JQF over to CMI to face Illinois: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KJQF/KCMI

Toledo is en route to BAF on Allegiant for tomorrow’s matchup with UMass: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KTOL/KBAF

Texas with the short hop on a United 737-900 over to FTW to face TCU for a big rivalry: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KAUS/KFTW

Memphis is on Allegiant up to PHL to face Temple tomorrow: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KMEM/KPHL

UL Monroe over to MYR on Sun Country to face a dangerous Coastal Carolina team: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMLU/KMYR

Syracuse is headed down to TLH on Allegiant to face FSU: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KSYR/KTLH

Texas Tech with a long flight over to CKB to face West Virginia onboard a United 737-900: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KLBB/KCKB

UCF is on Allegiant for the flight up to BWI to face Navy: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KSFB/KBWI

Tulane is on Sun Country out of NOLA and over to PGV to face ECU: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMSY/KPGV

Nevada is on a JetBlue A320 up to BOI to face Boise State: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/JBU ... /KRNO/KBOI

USF is headed over to DAL on Sun Country to face SMU: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KTPA/KDAL

Hail State is on Southwest today from GTR to CLL to face A&M: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA ... /KGTR/KCLL

Baylor up to OKC on a United 737-900 to face Oklahoma State:https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL2516/history/20211001/1940Z/KACT/KOKC

Hugh Freeze and Liberty are headed down to BHM on Allegiant to face UAB at their brand new stadium, quite monumental for a team that got rid of their program a few years back: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KLYH/KBHM

Boston College is en route to GSP on a JetBlue A321 to face Clemson, looks like Republic on behalf of United is also operating an E175 on BOS-GSP today as a revenue flight for fans: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/JBU ... /KBOS/KGSP

UConn is also on a JetBlue A321 down to BNA to face Vandy. The charter probably costs more than the ticket revenue generated for this matchup of two terrible teams: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/JBU ... /KBDL/KBNA

Old Dominion is on Allegiant for a very long flight over to ELP to face UTEP: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY ... /KORF/KELP

Arizona State on an American A321 over to BUR to face UCLA (this is really the only college team that does their charters on American, which I find interesting): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL ... /KPHX/KBUR

Sun Country is the ride for NM State up to SJC to face San Jose State: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KELP/KSJC

Quick flight for Air Force down to ABQ to face New Mexico on Sun Country: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMLU/KRDU

There are 3 UA Express flights I assume related to the Arkansas game coming in to XNA from AHN on Saturday night.

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/ASH ... /KAHN/KXNA
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UCA ... /KAHN/KXNA

First two are 170s and third is a 145.

6 hours give or take is typically the limit for the big schools, a little bit further for the smaller ones.

That’s quite interesting. I guess they’re going to fly back to Arkansas on a bunch of RJs, so that they can leave Athens quicker than headed back to Atlanta to catch a charter back home. Can’t do 717s out of AHN because of the contract with United

Ah I didn't think about them wanting to get home faster, win or lose. Going to be rough for those guys in the third one which is both last and a 145 at that.

Yeah, that will not be a fun ride. Will have to put the special teams unit on the 145 haha. Good thinking to get out of Athens quickly on United's part though, I can't remember the last time I remember a team using RJs to get out of AHN quickly post-game.

Leftover flights from today that haven’t been covered so far (was surprised to not see Cincy fly, especially for such a big matchup even though the distance isn’t terribly long):

Minnesota on the usual Sun Country flight down to LAF to face Purdue: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMSP/KLAF

Oregon flew down to SJC on Alaska to face Stanford tomorrow: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/ASA ... /KEUG/KSJC

Arkansas State flew over to AGS (not SAV, somewhat surprisingly) on a JetBlue A320 to face Georgia Southern tomorrow: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/JBU ... /KMEM/KAGS

I'm tracking the upcoming Mizzou homecoming game's opponent, North Texas, which is based in the DFW metroplex; I have found an unusual and rare WN B737 that flew to COU from DAL this morning and highly doubt that this is the North Texas charter, as today is Monday and too early for this week; will check for any later charters for North Texas in the coming days this week.

Here is the tracking information about this unusual WN 737 flight to COU (though I would like to see WN fly to COU for regular service someday!):
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA ... /KDAL/KCOU

Don't want to go off topic, but upon looking at flightradar24.com and confirming it on FlightAware, it is the WN B737 that was recently painted in Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary livery (N954WN):
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N95 ... /KDAL/KCOU

A missed opportunity for a plane spotting of this aircraft in a rare livery like this!

North Texas was on Allegiant for every road game that required a flight last year, so I anticipate that is what they will be on for Mizzou game, although as we’ve noted earlier, runway construction might mean they don’t fly into COU.

I suspect that N954WN was likely there for an ICE flight or military movement, was more likely than not government related. The ferry from DAL was the 86** number, and then, it operated whatever charter it was operating to LRD under a 74** number. There seems to have been a lot of ICE movement in and out of LRD in recent weeks.

Quick plug for jettip.net, always provides wonderful notifications when neat aircraft are in town so you don’t have to search for it yourself. Has saved me much time and helped me catch some unique things since I became a subscriber.

Pretty sure they flew on Allegiant last year as well but could be wrong. Don’t usually have a lot of away games that require flights due to their convenient location in the ACC

Thanks for the information on everything! It is very interesting to have such charter flights closer to home!

As for jettip.net, I did have a glimpse of the website and I find the website to be very useful! May consider signing up for a free trial next time I travel by air!

North Texas at Mizzou for MU's Homecoming Game, using a G4 A320:

As mentioned earlier, the flight will be to STL and then bussed from there to Mizzou due to COU's runway construction.

I was expecting Oregon State to fly into PUW for their game against WA State, but still haven't seen anything. Kinda surprising since it's a 7+ hour drive.

Hmm. Hopefully not another LWS tail tip. But why another LWS visit rather than PUW? Lower cost?

I believe that most teams visiting WSU stay at a hotel closer to LWS than PUW.

I did some searching and can't seem to figure out what that second flight you noted was (SCX8613). Can usually do some sleuthing and figure it out, but this one has me totally stumped. Would seem to be a sports charter by the flight number, as the last time that flight number was used was for Purdue's flight home from UConn

New Mexico State on Sun Country out of ELP and over to RNO to face Nevada: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KELP/KRNO

NMSU just returned directly into LRU on SCX8609. Aircraft N809SY will then ferry to AUS. Most NMSU charters do leave from ELP but return into LRU.
