Kam Air A340s

Fri Aug 27, 2021 1:26 am

I have noticed that the A340s belonging to Kam Air have their doors and emergency exit doors left open. Is it safe to assume they are W/O?

The vandalized Russian helicopter that was retrieved supposedly was only missing some food from an emergency crash package. I think the Taliban wants a functioning airport, so there is a good chance the planes will not be severely damaged, but the situation is very volatile. If there are rocket attacks things change completely.

No they are not written off,

YA-KME hasn't flown since January, it is stored at KBL, along with YA-KMT, and two other 737s on a taxiway away from the terminal.

YA-KMH the aircraft involved in the terminal incident where the the was flown to Abu Dhabi, inspected and later to Mashhad and is being stored at Mashhad, Iran.

YA-KMU was flown to Mashhad and is being stored at Mashhad, Iran along with a 733, YA-KMK.

Many Kam Air crew have left Afghanistan to other countries.

Are you sure about YA-KMT?. There is no sign of it on google maps.

Turkey is in talks with the Taliban to “manage” Kabul Airport.

Colleagues picked up another aircraft that had been sitting there for over a week un guarded for over a week. All that was missing was the sat phone, survival kit and water. After a very thorough pre flight, they flew it out.

Seen that done in hot climates where there is no ground air available when people are working inside. Apart from starting the APU the ventilation options are limited.

Terminal incident with people literally over the aircraft (on top, on wings, etc )and jet bridge.

I'd love to know what Kamair's insurance premiums are like at the moment? A former company of mine had a small aircraft stuck in Kabul for about a week after the Taliban entered the city. The DAILY premium was almost 0.5 PERCENT of hull value! So ten days for an aircraft with a hull value of say 10 million USD would work out at 500 000 USD! That's likely why they've had to move their aircraft swiftly out the country. The underwriters will have made it essential!

No one said anything about an "accident", the keyword was "incident".

This incident specifically:

My experience with commercial airline insurance is that’s its negotiated yearly and based on ASMs

Not when it comes to operating in volatile areas such as Afghanistan. I've operated in these areas, and it's not uncommon for geographical exclusions on the insurance policy, to be continually amended depending on what's going on geopolitically at the time.

I think your math maybe slightly off there....

$10 Million x 0.5 then Divide by 100 = $50,000

Not that unreasonable, I drive a 2014 Audi A4 Book Value £7500, my insurance works out at £500 a year, so looking comparatively a 0.5% hull to premium value is a bargain

He was talking 0.5% a day. And his figure was over 10 days so multiply your number by 10.

Your daily premium is roughly £1.37 a day, or roughly 0.018% of your car’s value. 0.5% of a the plane’s value a day isn’t looking like such a hot bargain anymore. That’s $18.25 million a year, which you might notice is more for insurance than the value of the plane.

Read my whole comment not just the first half of it... my maths is just fine.
The premium levied was DAILY! My 500 000 USD figure related to the 10 days the aircraft was on the ground. 10 000 000 X 0.005% = 50 000 USD X 10 days = 500 000 USD.

Or to put it in the terms of your Audi. 7500 X 0.005 X 365 = 13 687 GBP per annum. Not quite a bargain at all mate.

And the deductible / excess continually reviewed / changed, and premium surcharge applied too.

Reasons airlines usually operate specific frames to hot spots, often owned and old rather than leased / financed and newer.

It seems some Kam Air planes have been sent to Iran for safety until the situation in Kabul quietens down:

"This week, Kam Air urgently relocated some of its aircraft to Iran amid the disruptions in Kabul, Afghanistan. Despite the speculation surrounding the airline’s future, it has affirmed its commitment to serve the population of its nation."

Some additional detail about the airline:

"Kam Air concludes that it is a national company that belongs to the Afghan population. It doesn’t intend to stop offering its services to the people of its country after civil operations restart. Overall, the firm’s assets remain active in Kabul and Afghanistan’s other provinces."

"In total, Kam Air operates six Boeing 737-300s, three Airbus A340-300s, and a Boeing 737-500. The two aircraft families of the 737 and A340 offer a clear balance between short-haul and long-haul services. The average age of the fleet is 23 years. Tehran Times notes that at least two A340s and one 737 landed in Mashhad’s Hashemi Nejad Airport this week."
