End of A330 CEO production - When?

Mon Sep 06, 2021 12:45 pm

At the end of July 2021, the unfilled orders for A330 CEO are the following.

Governments; Executive and private Jets:   9
CASC:   8
IRAN AIR:   8

TOTAL:   25

What are the chances Iran Air will take delivery of their orders?
Is CASC willing to take delivery of the remaining A330 CEO orders?

When is the expected end of A330 CEO production?

Thank you for any input.

Basically production of the A330 is already closed. Only the MRTT version is still being built and can still be ordered.
Some CASC aircraft have already been built, mostly the Hong Kong Airlines aircraft which have not been delivered: MSN 1863, 1865, 1874, 1902, 1907, 1917 and the rest is cancelled or re-allocated. Iran Air would be crazy to not switch to NEO's or A350s if they want to take delivery as the value of CEO's went down and has older technology and economics. If they love the CEO they can buy above 6 frames no doubt, or ask THY or the Chinese airlines if they can buy some good 2nd hand ones.
The last pax A330-200 was MSN 1936, delivered to Level 10.2019, and the last 330-300 was MSN 1951, to Aer Lingus febr 2020.

That's not really a function of Iran Air being willing to take delivery, but of Airbus being seen as violating U.S. sanctions.

Sanctions have mainly targeted Iran’s purchase of any aircraft that carry more than 10 percent U.S.-origin parts. Even Russian-made aircraft such as the Sukhoi Superjet SSJ100 are nearly impossible for Iran to buy because they include more than 10 percent American parts and subsystems; only undesignated airlines can acquire them, and must go through case-by-case licensing via the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to do so.

Anybody betting on U.S. sanctions being lifted before Airbus ends A330ceo production has a bit appetite for risk.

The orders were made when there was a pathway for an export licence for the sale to proceed legally, a change of president happened and that pathway went away.

I see your point about disputing A330ceo. But, does this mean its fine with A330 non-neo? if not, why didn't you mention it?

Thanks.

So basically the 8 Iran Air and 8 CASC "orders" do not exist any more.

Sad to say, the A330ceo is gone. But it had a good run. 1,455 delivered with, I assume a few more whitetails and MRTTS to come. Airbus delivered 770+ -300s and pushing 700 -200s in one guise or another.

I can't remember how many sales were predicted back in the 'eighties but I do recall joining a discussion on this forum many years ago wondering if they'd reach the 700 mark for all models. WINGS, where are you?!

Now, one more time. Should we argue if A340 sales should be included? :stirthepot:  :duck:

The people of Iran have a right to safe air transportation. I hope that the situation improves and relations thaw so that A330neos (+ the rest of the Airbus order) can be delivered in the coming years.

Regarding A330ceos, how many MRTTs are yet to be delivered? Surely it wouldn't be too complicated to apply the MRTT processes to a neo?

Good question. Certainly another half dozen or so for France. But I suspect there will be further export orders to come - maybe quite a few. Canada, India and other countries have all been proposed as promising customers. It wouldn't surprise me if close 100 MRTTs were eventually built and delivered.

It's disappointing that Spain will now take converted -200s rather than new builds.

And has the final whistle been blown yet on the prospect of sales to the US military?

The topic of this thread is A330 production, not Middle Eastern politics.

Back to thread title...If I rember correctly, you can order the A330 CEO till 2025, this will be the last date. This is just because, you can order the A330 MRTT till 2025, so the CEO line will stay open till then.

To be honest, it's probably a better use of public funds. MRTTs will be used much more "lightly" in terms of hours and cycles than a commercial aircraft so buying a used one shouldn't be a problem. A Qantas A330-200 I flew on a few years ago (VH-EBI) was converted in a similar manor for the Australian Air Force. Took the best part of three years though.

There's a new contract coming up, no?

Thank you for the answers.

My understanding is that the production of commercial A330 CEO (passenger and freighter versions) has de facto ended. Only the MRTT and VIP are still in production.

It means Airbus would remove the 16 A330 ceo orders from Iran Air and CASC from its orders and deliveries spreadsheet in the future.

From now on, the only commercial A330 on offer is the neo version.

This thread fulfilled its purpose.
Can we please close this thread? Thank you.
