As I said in an older post. Airbus is not even actively marketing the A319NEO (except the CJ) at the moment. It is a "on request" option. If an airline is looking at planes in the market segment, Airbus offers the A223 first, but if an airline wants A320+A321s and some A319s as well, they are willing to do this.

Right, but any/every plausible Airbus customer knows of the A319neo so if they want it they'll ask for it.

This means the distinction is meaningless, it is at best a bit of posturing by the marketing team.

In the end it is only important by the fact, that they do not compete with themselves by offering A223 and A319s. In the end the whole segment seems is not seeing too many sales anyway.

That's the posturing bit, in reality they do compete with themselves by having two overlapping products that are available, one they offer, another you have to ask for but is presented on their web site and known to all potential customers.

In the current generation of single-aisle aircraft, the shorter versions are selling little (737-7 Max, A319 Neo, 220-100 and 190E2), not least because the new extended versions fly farther and need less runway to take off. But we have to consider that having other competitive models (such as the A321 and A320) is a great advantage in providing value to operators and reducing production costs. A similar effect occurs because there is a significant number of aircraft from the previous generation, with commonality. The A220 doesn't have any of that. There is only one model that is competitive and there is no inventory of older brothers flying around...

To be honest I have not yet seen many cases where an airline considered A223 and A319s.

Airbus could steer preferences by offering customers different pricing & conditions for A220 and A319, as far "competing".
I guess the most important trade-off for customers are probably fleet considerations, do they need 120 or 200 seat capacity too.

I don't agree there aren't many cases where an airline didn't considered A223 vs A319s. Big A220 customers like AirfFance, Delta and Jetblue have A320 fleets
They certainly will have considered A319NEO's for commonality. But apparently the A220 came out better overall.

Scott Hamilton had an interview on the A220 and reviews the NB situation: https://leehamnews.com/2021/09/28/airbu ... /#comments
