Icelandair asks for permission to fly charters from MCO to HAV

Wed Sep 15, 2021 8:08 am

Anyone know how this could possibly be profitable especially with the lack of utilization as pointed out in the article?

You get to utilise an otherwise unused frame on behalf of a travel company. I'm not sure it does make sense, but it doesn't seem like it's going to be completely at risk

Why not. Makes sense. Let's hope there's no political meddling and that the DOT grants them approval.

Nearly every American carrier with rights to Cuba will object this

Are any of them flying to Cuba outside Miami?

That bloodbath has come and gone

One might expect objections even from a carrier or two not flying Florida-Havana. Lawyers (internal or outside counsel) stay busy.

If an American tour operator with an air certificate ala ... Morris Air, could charter the aircraft upon it's MCO arrival from KEF, a market that can't have scheduled service, but can have a scheduled charter, they can take if for the dayfly to & from MCO & HAV, if the charter operation rights are available why not?

Agreed.

For instance Vacation Express charters/ed a Canadian carrier, Sunwing (WG), to operate from points in the US to the Caribbean. They will be operating flights for the charter company next year and have in previous years from BNA, CVG, etc.

I remember Icelandair was contracted in the past by Apple Vacations to fly US-Mexico charters.

Icelandair has also flown on behalf of Santa Barbara Airlines, they flew MIA-CCS and MIA-MAR.

At risk of what, or to what?

At risk means financially at risk, as in Iceland Air bears the financial risk (profits or losses) of the operation. The other option is the charter company paying for the flight in full, and Iceland Air not having an upside if the plane goes out full or a downside if the plane goes out with 22 passengers.

I recall for at least a month before WOW folded that they operated MIA-HAV and MIA-SNU for Gulfstream Air Charter, in that the concept of an Icelandic carrier operating between the US and Cuba wouldn't be totally new. Icelandair presumably won't be using all of their fleet for this part of the season anyway whether there won't be as much demand between Europe/US for winter regardless of travel restrictions, that they can afford to have an aircraft do these.

Icelandair also sits their planes for quite a good chunk of time at MCO (among other stations) in order to connect better when returning to Iceland. It is not like they would have to totally restructure schedules in order to make this work, should they be granted operating rights.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

It's 2021 and demand is still very low for icelandair. They don't have anything better and this would be pretty easy for them to pull off. Makes sense for them to try, it's very unlikely to get approved but they have nothing better so mine as well try

It's likely demand from the Icelandic side for Cuba that is driving the request since their government doesn't slap its people with the same restrictions the US government imposes on its people. Currently, there are only about two flights a day from the US to Havana, so it will be interesting to see if demand picks up when COVID restrictions are lifted in November.

Why wouldn’t they just fly direct then?

It’s not like this is a continuation flight, it’s a flight on a completely different day.

So much negativity! Why not? More competition, more interesting “exotic” routes, as avgeeks we should be all over this!

These would be operated as charter flights on behalf of Anmart Superior Travel (Anmart Air).

The web-page of this travel agency looks like a 5year old did it... Honestly, how can such a company have enough money to Charter flights; but not enough for the most basic webdesign?!

yeah, it's really bad... especially becuase they use computer generated animation in their destination gallery photos. that's a 2 hour site builder website....
