American 737-800 Retrojet

Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:48 pm

Had a great flight on the AA 737-800 retrojet with the orange lightning bolt livery and Astrojet titles this past Saturday from Charlotte to Hartford. I was surprised, as i thought the retro 737 scheme had been painted over. Thats one sharp looking plane. Were/are there more than just that one in the old Astrojet livery? I know a 757 had a similar retrojet livery a while back too.

There's only one Astrojet, though there's a 738 in the old chrome with stripes livery and various AA hybrids such as TWA/Reno etc

The original 737 Astrojet (N951AA) was painted over with the standard livery, but a new one was painted (N905NN, which you rode) around the same time. This was done 4-5 years ago.

As you mentioned a 757 retro jet also existed but they painted that plane back to standard AA livery a long time ago (>10 years ago iirc), and of course no 757s at AA now.

Yes, the 757 in Astrojet livery, I remember that. This was done back in 1999 to celebrate 40 years of jet service at American Airlines. Like you say, no more 757 at American now.

A gent I know who flies 737s for American got to fly the Retrojet down to Mexico City a week or two ago. He was, to put it mildly, STOKED.

We were flying through DFW last month and it showed up at the gate next to ours. The airline geek in me went on full display, it really does look good.
