updated: Republic 175 tire failure jacks up DCA

Sat Oct 16, 2021 10:39 pm

An American eagle flight operated by Republic from MEM suffered a gear fire on landing at DCA and traffic is being diverted to IAD/BWI. For added fun thunderstorms have NYC airspace in knots.
Fun day on the eastern seaboard eh?

Looks like they have 15/33 open now. Had a few rare departures on 4 while both main runways were down.

AC8827 took off on Rwy 4 and flew the Anacostia departure:

So, no fire, just blown tires, right?

Per Flightaware, winds 310 gusting to 18-23kts variable. Low level wind shear?

Second source - http://avherald.com/h?article=4eec4ebf&opt=0

Did really make a mess with all the inbound flights and EWR having wx diversions at the same time.

Any theories of what could blow all three tires at the same time besides pilot error / incredibly hard landing?

Anti skid failure? Brake failure? Hydraulic failure?

I saw that too. Genuine question but how does a hydraulic failure blow the tires?

Just my $.02, but I doubt even a hard landing that could cause visible damage to the airframe would blow all the tires (and I'm assuming it was just all the mains).

I think whatever caused the tire failure is likely to end up being the brakes, whether functioning as intended, commanded or not...possibly in conjunction with the heavy rain at the field at the time of landing. But that's only an opinion based on the limited information we have. And it's not the "root cause."

I don't know the E175 but generally speaking there is an alternate braking system that has a limited number of applications and does not have anti skid protection. If used it is fairly common for pilot to roast the tires when using alternate braking because they don't want to modulate the brakes and risk loosing the limited braking applications they have available.

Ahh. So not the hydraulic failure itself, but the failure then requires the use of alternate braking and that is what could cause the tire issue. Makes sense.

So, in the end, was there a fire or not?

No fire. Just primary hydraulic failure. I assume tires got hot and blew because of braking action. ATC at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRXDeIlUhH0

All in all, an incident but fairly mundane. Inconvenience some with delays and altered traffic. Good job to the pilots who still managed to stop on a less than 7k foot runway without primary hydraulic system!
