SFO takeoffs and landings on 19's Sunday, 10/24

Sun Oct 24, 2021 3:52 pm

Due to the pineapple express hitting the Bay Area, the 19's are the only runways in use right now. I know it is fairly common to land on the 19's, especially in bad weather, but taking off on the 19's is like landing on the 01's, I believe, fairly rare. The METAR:

KSFO 241456Z 19032G40KT 2SM -RA BR FEW008 BKN046 OVC085 17/15 A2963 RMK AO2 PK WND 20041/1443 SLP033 P0011 60034 T01720150 58007

32 kt sustained gusting to 40 kt right down the 19's will do it!

In all my years flying, I never had a landing on the 1s or a departure from the 19s at KSFO.

Yikes:

CIITY3 and GAPP7 departures currently in use off of the 19's. It will be interesting how this progresses throughout the day as the forecast indicates that the weather is only going to get worse throughout the day.

I wonder how many noise complaints the airport gets today.

Not getting any better:

Could be quite a few. I guess the preference is the CIITY3 RNAV departure, which puts them directly over Hillsborough and Burlingame on their way down the peninsula, which typically don't get low level overflight noise from SFO. If they used GAPP7, which is not RNAV, then the turn would be tighter and more flight would be over the bay.

It was loud this morning. Certainly louder than the occasional days w landings on the 1s.

In all my years of flying in and out of SFO, today was my first time taking off into the Millbrae hills. DL716 took off right into the storm. Wasn’t too bumpy. I chose a window seat 6A looking forward to the view and wouldn’t you know it, there is NO FLIPPING WINDOW at this seat. Didn’t say that on the ap when I chose my seat either. Oh well…..

Air India used 10 into:

KSFO 241756Z 19036G46KT 2SM -RA BR FEW008 BKN030 OVC050 18/16 A2961 RMK AO2 PK WND 19046/1756 SLP026 P0010 60065 T01780156 10178 20167 58007

Thinking that was a rough take off

Wow, it sure did! Must not have been enough length on the 19's for the extremely long flight. Anyone know what the crosswind limits for take-off on a 77L are? 40 kts?

It won't help for today, but Seatguru.com has it noted on the 767-300 seat map versions that 6A has either a misaligned or missing window. Been there done that so have found this website very helpful if any question as to seat layouts/pros and cons etc before selection or to change.

Several go-arounds per FR24 and switchback patterns coming into the 19's.

AMX668 taking a second stab at it right now:

https://www.flightradar24.com/AMX668/299f2cf2

What's interesting is it looks like it didn't fly the normal missed approach, which is a climbing left turn. Instead, it went right over the hills and back into the pattern.

It just went missed for a second time.

KSFO 241856Z 19036G49KT 2SM -RA BR FEW008 BKN022 OVC034 17/16 A2960 RMK AO2 PK WND 20049/1851 SLP023 P0009 T01720156

Gusting to 49 kts now...good luck everyone!

UPDATE:

AMX668 now diverting to FAT. Long way to go for more fuel?

Update: AM668 now diverting to FAT after two missed approaches.... good lord.

DL1047 in from MSP might be diverting as well? UA1909 from SEA appears to be trying for a second time, and DL2339 from SEA appears to have given up before even reaching the Bay Area (maybe just in a holding pattern). Etc, etc, etc.

Will be quite interesting to see what happens later today as LH454 (748) will be landing in 30 mins... along with tons more EU/ME arrivals. Sheesh.

Update, DL1047 now diverting to LAX.

Listening to the tower, pilots are getting wind shear alerts sitting on the runway waiting for take-off clearance.

I'm currently on DL 487 SFO-JFK 763ER N182DN and it was a very bumpy climb out. I noticed a SAS A330 taking to take off on the longer adjacent runway.

Back in 1975 I was on a UAL 747 that departed 19L for a flight to HNL. Super windy and rainy at the time.

UA 2246 SNA-SFO flew same missed approach, straight ahead and right turn back in the pattern - UA 2036 to TPA had just taken off and was making the left out of SFO

AA 1631 from PHX went missed with a right turn back to the pattern, landed on try #2

DL 1317 from SLC just missed, right turn back to the pattern

DL 1317 was told to go around due to insufficient spacing. Looks like it was just pulled off the ILS approach again for the same reason.

Interesting, looks like trying to squeeze out departures in between landings not working so well.

AA 614 from PHL -- left base for 19s, interesting that the flight was not sent "around" for the right base line with the others......looks like it sat in PHL for over 2 hours after push-back and prior to departure if FA is correct - wondering if fuel was an issue for this one. And now going around.

Yeah, all landings are on 19L and they are trying to get the heavies out on 19L, as well. At some point, it stops working when the numbers are too much for 19L. Throw in the fact they can only depart one aircraft from 19R or 19L at a time since they are using the same departure, I'm surprised the situation isn't any worse.

Had to be fun at SFO today, especially for the controllers at NCT working those arrivals. As for bumps, beyond the issues with LLWS and crosswinds, you'd be surprised how smooth it can be flying through this more typical California rain. This kind of heavy, showery precipitation is generally not at all convective and can be quite smooth, though loud, to fly through.

That’s what I was thinking - once you’re above the nearby ridgelines everything usually smooths right out.

I miss Channel 9 for days like today… I captured our touchdown onto 19L from SNA on UA2230 earlier. What a fun ride, made in one attempt with a very squeaky interior 738:

Indeed...fortunately a much sturdier bridge design. Fun to look up - the GGB has been 'whistling' for a few years now in high winds because of the modifications made to the railing to prevent suicides.
