Sunday 10/24’s AAL3141 (E175) LAX-SEA appears to have had a double diversion—first to RDD and then to ACY. Is this a common occurrence? I’ve never seen it before. Thanks!

I don't think AA3141 actually landed in RDD rather I think they planned on diverting to RDD then changed the diversion point to ACY.

I'm sure you must mean ACV (Arkata / Eureka), not ACY (Atlantic City). Most likely due to the wind and rain storm on the West Coast today. FlightAware advises that SEA-TAC has all inbound flights on a 55-minute ground stop.

SkyWest serves both airports although there is no AA service to RDD. Might have been weather related.

They both are OO stations, but RDD doesn’t have AA service, nor do they see E175s.

Really odd choice to divert to ACV for weather…. Surprised they didn’t return to LAX.

I got an FR24 alert that it declared emergency just before the diversion, so could be something mechanical? N508SY is a brand new plane…

A friend of mine was booked on SEA-LAX that was supposed to be run by this plane, he said they told him it was an anti-icing issue that they couldn’t go to SEA with due to the WX conditions in the Northwest. Why they didn’t turn back to LAX who knows.

Could be… Add the already existing icing issue to it.

Having been the recipient of several non company diversions at a tiny Airport way back when, I can just imagine how much “fun” this was for the local OO station staff. All hands on deck, call the FBO guys for help, if they are still around.

Looks like it was “just” a 175, and the station already handles them.
It appears that ACV is seeing more traffic these days than I remember.

Since it declared emergency at the same time it started descending & turning west, I doubt it was fuel. Would an anti-ice issue really cause an emergency diversion like that? Seems odd to me...

I'll assume you meant a different airport other than ACY since I seriously doubt an E175 has the range to fly from Los Angeles to Atlantic City, New Jersey. That said, I seem to remember years ago a flight that diverted once for some reason, don't remember if it was medical or mechanical. After a while, they no longer had the hours to make it to the final destination, so they continued the flight and diverted a second time for a crew change. I don't know how common it is, but it has happened.
