CH-Aviation is reporting that Azerbaijan Airlines is proceeding ahead with its longstandung fleet renewal plans to order new aircraft at both Airbus and Boeing. According to the article, the airline is set to order twenty A320neo-family aircraft and nine B787s.

The new aircraft should all be delivered by 2030 and will replace the Azerbaijan Airlines' current fleet of four A319s (one is in VIP configration), seven A320s (one is in VIP configration), two A340-500s, two B757-200s and three B767-300ERs (one is in VIP configration).

After the relevant proposal is prepared, it will be submitted to the Supervisory Board of “Azerbaijan Airlines” CJSC and “Azerbaijan Investment Holding”, which is expected at the end of this year.

Currently Azerbaijan Airlines operates a diverse fleet for their commerical arm:
Airbus A319: 3
Airbus A320: 6
Airbus A340: 2
Boeing 757: 2
Boeing 767: 2
Boeing 787: 2
Total: 22

Not surprising to see the neo, after they bailed on the MAX.

Good; that's a nice, sensible fleet.

Well that list ignored the 787, though I see you've mentioned it below.
The 787 and A320neo represent sensible, low-risk choices given that both types are, more or less, already in the fleet.
Now if only Thai Airways would apply such logic to their fleet choices!
Of course the enthusiast in me likes the variety, but it's hard to justify the "handful of this, handful of that" approach when your entire fleet is smaller than three-dozen aircraft.

So can we conclude that AZAL won't firm up its Mc-21 Letter of interest?

Didn't they operate Embraers as well at some point? Or were all transferred to their LCC company? .... forgot its name.

Will be interesting to see what they do with 11 B787s and if they start building a serious hub at GYD. Location isn't all that bad.

The first list was the list of aircraft to be replaced, so presumably the 2 existing 787s will not be replaced.

All Embraers are indeed with Buta Airways, they intend to grow the fleet too.

GYD is indeed not badly located but lots of direct options already exist bypassing them, from Russia, Turkey and Middle-East.
Not sure they will find their place on that type of traffic but the Azerbaijan market itself is growing steadily (50% increase in passengers between 2015 and 2019) and a fresh fleet and high-quality product is what they need to maintain their market share in Baku

Places like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are seeing steady economic growth over the last couple of years. If I remember well, Uzbekistan's growth was recently increased from 5.5% this year to 6%. This in its own turn stimulates demand for air travel. AZAL doesn't have to operate a mega hub but they can have their own little regional network covering places that are not easily accessible.

Baku has been a booming energy city in the region. This simple fleet plan will position them nicely to carve out a good niche. How is their overall product?

I can see:
Even split 321LR and 320neo
All 789s

Thinking about it, could A321XLR work really well for them? I think with it they could cover all of Europe and could even reach as far as Beijing, no? Unless there is cargo demand these could do wonders for them.

Are the a345's still in the fleet? I hope they survive covid! Is the 777 for passenger use?

The A345s are stored according to https://www.planespotters.net/airline/AZAL-Azerbaijan-Airlines, but they are still listed in the airline website's fleet page.

Nope, the 777-200LR is going to be for Government use. It's undergoing cabin outfiting now.

They still fly every few months on Moscow or Bodrum routes but it's sporadic, it'll fly for 2 months ish then get parked for 2-3 months then fly again is what I've found throughout covid.

It was like that pre covid too. Azal’s A345 utilization is very poor.

Yes it was. Just watching for when it pops up on flightradar and then hop on over there to fly on it haha fingers crossed

I could see this being A320neo, A321XLR, and B788. The B789 is too much plane for Azerbaijan with the B788 being their largest plane. The B788 replaces the B763, The A321XLR replaces the B752, and the A319/A320 with the A320neo.

As for the A345s, once they were taken off GYD-JFK, they became a real waste to the airline. As these are 380t birds, are they even worth it being preighters?

A plane isn’t “too much” just because it’s slightly larger than an airline’s current largest plane. The 789 is more efficient and the economics may work for AZAL.

they also wholly own Buta, doing the regional work on E190s as a quasi LCC. Georgia, Turkey, Russia, etc. (I’ve flown them and the short missions like TBS are suited well to the Embraer)

A few years ago I flew a couple of short legs on their 767 and A345, and on both the thing that caught my attention first was the low seating density and loads of legroom in every row. It would indeed be interesting to see if they go for a larger 787 model...do they need it?

The order sounds like a complete overdose... 20 A320 to replace 9 A319/A320 and maybe 2 B757 plus 9 B787 to replace 4 B767/A340. So AZAl is expecting a massive international growth?

Market grew 50% between 2015 and 2019, it will come back quickly post-Covid as the demand is growing particularly from the Middle East.
AZAL can surely grow frequencies on some existing markets and the growing international demand opens opportunities for them, doesn't seem an overkill for me considering the efficiency of the fleet compared to today

Funnily enough, A320neo/A321neo and B787 seems to be the perfect aircraft combinations for many small and medium size airlines across the world.
