SQ unveils new business class for its Boeing 737 Max

Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:45 am

SQ has just unveiled its new business class seats on the B737 Max based on the Vantage model from Thompson Aero Seating, carefully styled by London's Factorydesign.

Singapore Airlines inherited the Boeing 737 MAX fleet from now-axed regional sibling SilkAir, and has already upgraded six MAX jets with these new seats.

The airline says these will take wing "in the coming weeks" to selected destinations "in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, and Thailand."

Incredible what spectrum of comforts you might find on the same type these days: Tightest seating and lavs inside the closet and all the pains and then this pure well being. Same goes for A.

The 6 737MAX, coming from Silkair, will return to service before the end of the year.

A different width in each row? Sounds like a nightmare for maintenance.

Why does SQ start the row numbers at 11?

CM's 7M9 business seats seem more efficient of a lie-flat narrowbody option; but SQ's seem far more luxurious.

What I'm wondering, is what's the median stage length for SQ's 737Ms?
CM's are quite long.

The shortest is KUL, some of the longer ones pre-Covid were Busan, Okinawa, Darwin, which are unlikely to return any time soon. I think right now the longest are probably Male, Chengdu, I think KTM, too.

1-10 are reserved for F, even on planes that do not have F.

The throne seats are impressive... The width of the seat itself seems tight but the personal space is huge - better privacy than most business class in widebodies.

I slightly prefer the Thompson Aero Vantage seats on FlyDubai because of the higher and flat seat backs, but the Singapore ones look a lot more elegant. A mix of both would have been nicer, but that's down to personal opinion.

CM went for a more efficient use of space, with the downside that there's no direct aisle access for any window seat and there's little privacy. I would prefer the Thompson Aero Vantage seats over the Rockwell Collins Diamond ones for many reasons.

For direct aisle access and privacy, would it be possible to configure business class on narrow body in 3-a-row 1-1-1 seats?

I think the longest is Cairns. In the past with 787-800, It was SIN-CNS-DRW-SIN. I believe the intention was to change that to SIN-CNS-SIN with the MAX.

Not easily - there are only two sets of mounting rails, one either side, so there would be nowhere to mount the centre seat, and the side seats would also likely be offset from the mounts. There may be a way to do it, but I suspect it would be impractical and heavy.

Does anyone else think it's weird that the seats have different widths in rows 11 and 14? Is it due to the fuselage tapering?

The 737 has a bit of a tapering at the front. On an all Y config, it is apparent from row 5 and forwards.

Thanks, that explains it then. That means quite a lot of seat width variation across this small business cabin. From 19 inches all the way up to 22.

That's not the reason. The throne seats are 22" because there's only 1 and the others are 19". Think of it as 2 classes within one. The single seats with direct aisle access are slightly more luxurious and wider. JetBlue does the same with their Mint product. Their seats are 20" and 22".

Oh I get the differences between the dual seats and the throne seats, I wasn't talking about that. What caught my eye was that when looking at the dual seats in rows 11 and 14, there's a difference in width of 19" and 20". As Jeffrey mentioned it's probably down to the fuselage tapering towards the front of the plane.

Will the NGs get retrofitted? It’s also nice to see they are getting 8 more MAXs in the near future.

These will progressively be replaced by the Maxes.

It looks amazing. I can not believe flydubai are getting rid of there lay flat seats. They didn’t even show the new business class seats at the dubai air show. They new seat has had lots of complaints. It’s not at all comfortable.

Yes, Cairns was the longest route from SIN before the COVID19 pandemic by SilkAir. Total flight duration 6 hours 40 mins. It operated SIN-HIJ (Hiroshima) at 6 hours 45 mins and was suspended in early March 2020, at the peak of COVID19.

Not quite.

Row 11 are 19", row 12 are 22", and row 14 are 20".

The window seats in the dual seat rows seem almost impossible to exit when the pax alongside the aisle is fully reclined. It seems it would be more difficult trying to exit in this type of config with this type of seat than say, for example, the 2-2-2/2-3-2 J-seat on TK A330/77W. At least with the TK seat there is 78-inches of pitch whereas with this type of seat the pitch is so tight there isn't much room to maneuver.

Has anyone had experience with both types of seats?

I always wonder why airlines choose the Vantage for small J cabins on NBs. Seems like too much inconsistency across the cabin and too tight in the dual rows. Throne seats = bliss. Dual seats = nightmare.

Wow you must be one spoiled passenger to please. If a lie flat window seat is that bad maybe you should give NetJets a call?

They have already sent one to Dubai Air Wing and 5 are being returned to lessor who has leased them to Virgin Australia. 3 have already arrived in Australia and are currently being refitted to a new VA configuration which will be tested before being rolled out across the existing VA fleet.

If you're getting a fully flat bed on 40-60 minute flight, thats "Setting the bar". You do realize that Singapore Airlines is deploying the MAX on short hops around Asia and not long haul like Jetblue's (JFK-LHR). These are two different products for different missions.............

There is a local SQ website which wrote an article few months ago titled "Cathay Pacific’s new Regional Business Class should make it easy for SIA to shine with its MAX" when CX unveiled recliner seat on their ex-KA A321neo, guess they are not wrong at all.
