Spicejet Goes longhaul with 777s from Boeing

Mon Nov 29, 2021 8:49 am

Looks like spicejet is going to get some 300ERs? From Boeing (used of course) to begin flights to North America. Wouldn’t a 787 have been more appropriate
?

Interesting development here anyway. Thoughts?

Are there any used 787 around that are ready for pick up? The 300ERs are definetely faster available (as of next month) and new 787s could not have been delivered at all anyway. So the only Boeing option was the 77Ws.

Also they use them for cargo if pax operation is prohibited and the 77W will lift more than the 787.

According to their Twitter feed, it's the -200ER, not 300ER.

A B77W/77E won’t be able to fly nonstop with full payload from DEL to USA if it’s configured in a high density Y class or even 370 seater two class layout especially in winter season.

In addition they can only operate 6 weekly flights to USA with two B77Ws. It would be probably better using the B77Ws to UK and KSA considering their business model.

They certainly can fly a daily route between India and USA with two 77Ws.

How do you work that ? The total flight time for the round trip DEL/NYC is over 30 hours, plus ground time at both ends. You could 6 per week, but not daily.

Put it as a 14-day schedule
Plane A flies DEL-NYC vv. on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13
Plane B flies DEL-NYC vv. on days 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14

This is given the two planes only flies DEL-NYC. Ground hour won't exceed more than four hours at best and you only have one rotation every 48 hours - plenty of down time.

I'll use AI's AI105/6 schedule as an example - Plane A departs 2.25am on day 1 and gets to EWR on 7.15am on the same day; return flight departs 11.15am and arrives at 11.25am on day 2. Now there's 14hr between when the plane touches down in DEL and goes back to EWR again on day 3; plenty of chance if they want to increase utilisation e.g. inserting some regional flyings like DEL-DXB v.v..

Granted these calculation does not factor in maintenance, AOG etc.

I think if used for pax service, Europe might be a better option for them in terms of utilisation and they could even have 2 destinations. London has always been their dream so that could be an option. Nothing else, Middle East and SE Asia always needs it. But my opinion is Europe might be best for these planes. They need a bit more scale for US operations.

Given the volatile long-haul Int'l market due new variant Omicron, they might as well use it for cargo ops. They already use a pax variant 772ER and 763 of Euroatlantic Airways for cargo ops and some other Airbus WB's from HiFly.

If they use it for pax ops, likely market would be London. They had last December announced flights to LHR from DEL/BOM, using HiFly A339neo, but that didn't materialize.

These are going to be very old used aircraft, if Boeing is handing it over for free. Wonder what the economics and performance of such aircraft would be. On the one hand they are keen to switch from 737NG to the MAX fleet quickly, which they have now reactivated, on the other they getting these old used gas-guzzling 772's which every other airline is getting rid of. They could have instead asked for some ntu 787's as compensation.

Boeing is probably happy with giving away these 772 considering almost no one wants a classic 777 variant anymore. 77W and 77L have stolen all the spot light of the 777 family.

This suggests 77Ws x 2, as compensation for MAX issues:

"SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh confirmed that the airline will receive two 777-300ERs from Boeing as compensation for the 30-month grounding of the 737 MAX."

Their twitter page literally said 777-200ER. One of them has to be wrong.

"Boeing GAVE 2 777-200/300ERs as compensation for MAX groundings?" :rotfl:

I'd like to hear from Boeing that they GAVE 2 777s to SpiceJet as compensation. Not from some avbloggers!

Ajay Singh has been trying unsuccessfully to swindle some money from Boeing to keep his cash strapped airline afloat. Boeing, to their credit, didnt budge from their position and repeatedly asked the man to go take a hike! And now they suddenly GAVE him 2 old 777s? Just like that? Yeah Right!

SpiceJet has been scrounging for widebodies from any place they can get them. They leased A330 and 767s from some European airlines (short term leases)? Ajay Singh made a big deal in the Indian media about "squeezing" Boeing for cash compensation and this spin is another crude attempt to whitewash his failure to squeeze Boeing. What is more likely is that Ajay Singh managed to find some poor fool who had 2 777s lying around and picked them up! If at all! If the leasing company is smart they will do a background credit check on this guy before sending their 777s to India!

Does Ajay Singh have money left to burn on vanity projects like flights to the US? Well, then Mr.Singh should start by PAYING HIS STAFF! Poor sods have been working without pay or half pay for months now!

I could see Twitter being wrong as they probably aren't as familiar with the differences.

It’s not just a tweet, they also have a graphic advertising for the pilots with 777-200ER written on it. But who knows.

Those two B777-200ER are most probably coming from Boeing Capital Corporation, mostly ex-SQ airframes that they traded-in for 787 order previously.

Currently they have the following B777s in their inventory:
N509BC 33370 / 451 Boeing 777-212(ER)
N772BC 32320 / 438 Boeing 777-212(ER)
N784BC 30874 / 430 Boeing 777-212(ER)
N945BC 30869 / 366 Boeing 777-212(ER)
N623BC 33374 / 503 Boeing 777-312
N638BC 33376 / 515 Boeing 777-312
N792BC 32327 / 484 Boeing 777-312
N855BC 34568 / 586 Boeing 777-312ER
