Single Engine Piper Overshoots MDW Runway

Tue Dec 07, 2021 9:57 pm

Nothing serious. No one hurt.

He was doing touch and goes ??? At MDW??? Maybe he should have tried ORD.

Not unusual to see GA planes at MDW. Or ATL, LGA or DTW for that matter. If local control can handle the traffic count, no issues. Running off the runway at MDW in a Cherokee is a little hard understand.

Touch-and-goes in a Piper ought to be plenty easy at MDW, let alone ORD.

I don’t see what the problem is. Are you a pilot?

Why yes i am. Why do you ask?

Palwaukee, yup. DuPage, yup

A major big city airport with lots of traffic -- no way.

Because you’re far more likely to do touch and goes at MDW then ORD.

Why would there be a difference? KPWK or KDPA can have lots of traffic, too, with much being student pilots.

At a very minimum I would be considerate enough to not add work load to overworked controllers at MDW or ORD.

I've flown into DAL and DFW in a single engine. I wouldn;t do touch and goes at those either..

Add workload? That’s their job. Either they can accommodate you or they can’t.

I would guess having been in a few tower cabs that working traffic at a busy GA airport would be more stressful that MDW. Put a couple of student pilots, a few private pilots with no local knowledge, mix in a light twin and a bizjet in the VFR pattern and that’s stress. If it’s busy in the Class B, they can easily say no and will, but that’s rare.

I agree, I think being a MDW controller would be more difficult than ORD just given that the vast majority of GA pilots choose MDW over ORD. Then you have to space the Piper in-between multiple Southwest jets for instance. I wonder if the Chicago area controllers miss Meigs Field.

Oddly enough, tomorrow is the anniversary of WN1248, and UA553. Both overruns at MDW on 12/8.

As a student pilot back in the late 60's I use to fly to DPA all the time. Once while my instructor gave me an engine out emergency in the Lockport area practice area I picked a nice field to land in which when I turned towards it I discovered it was Clow Field at the time and a grass strip so we just continued for a normal soft field landing and taxied back and did a soft field takeoff.

All this said, I wouldn’t pick MDW simply because it’s likely you’ll buy a lot running time without many landings. Sitting at the hold line, running up Hobbs meter time for nothing isn’t productive.

You folks all realize that MDW has parallel runways right? You can have your SWA planes keep their normal pace on the main runway and let the trainers do their touch and goes on the other.
