New French airline: environmentally friendly and premium

Wed Dec 08, 2021 1:37 pm

Interesting news. A new French airline with a different concept to launch operation in 2023 from ORY.

From the article:
• The use of aeronautical biofuel, Flying Green undertakes to use at least 5% of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from the start of operations.
• The latest generation of aircraft fleet which is quieter and consumes less fuel.
• “Green” operational procedures in flight and on the ground.
• The choice of eco-responsible partners.
• Human resources committed to sustainable development, with an environmental ethics charter signed by all employees. Zero paper, 100% recyclable waste policies as well as maximum digitization are implemented from the start of the company’s operations.

Thoughts?

Perhaps some idea of where they are going to fly rather than just "medium haul" would be an idea. Right now I see waffle and fluff... not any kind of credible company

New competition is always good for the industry.

This no doubt is to take the routes AF was forced to drop by the French government.

The likes of LYS, SXB and other cities aren’t served no longer other then by train until there is a more sustainable airline which is what they’re looking to take advantage of.

Eco-sustainable is one thing but the economics of such short routes, especially with A320 seized-aircraft) will be atrocious.
They can compete on high volumes leisure routes with a low-cost model and hoping to capture more high-end passengers willing to pay a little extra for sustainability but they won't and can't offer AF's convenience to grab a significant market share

The objective of the French government is to eliminate air travel for domestic routes altogether, not to find a "greener" airline to fly them. And AF certainly won't be handing out any of its slots. These will transfer to Transavia for medium haul flights. The government has zero interest in creating competition to AF when it is a 15% shareholder. Having to hand out slots to Vueling was a bitter enough pill to swallow.

I'm waiting for this to die quickly, if it ever launches.

It's good for consumers. It's bad for the industry.

If you mean “slots”, these went to VY already.

By medium haul I'm thinking that means Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Greece, Turkey, and Israel. Maybe Morocco or Algeria.

Yes heaven forbid the industry should try to evolve on its own...

Explain bad for the industry? It's good. Airlines can paint the planes green and call it eco friendly. Consumers will believe it.

I was referring to overcapacity. Does the E.U. aviation market really suffer from a lack of low-cost competition?

New competition often causes entrenched carriers to just add more of their own capacity to the market to defend market share, and then everyone loses (airlines, not customers, obviously).

Premium travel I suspect will also mean lower density and onboard catering? If you really want to be eco-friendly, you would maximise the density and minimise the on-board garbage...

I think Ryan air is probably one of the most eco-friendly airlines...

It won't fly. As flaky as France is there are not enough Greenies to make it work. They will be gone in less than 6 months.

Most of the market LCCs served especially in Europe are the kind of routes that Full Service Airlines abandoned because it doesn't generate as much profit as the their main routes. Holiday destinations, or secondary cities tend to get abandoned by Full Service Airlines in most cases.

Also, there are lack of offering for discounted premium airlines like JetBlue in Europe. You either got Ryanair/Wizz/EasyJet or Lufthansa/BA/KLM/etc.

New competition would force airlines (both LCCs and Full service airlines) to evolved. Lazy airlines would go under.

According to the article, the airline will begin fundraising for it's most eco-friendly fleet in Europe (all 3 of it ) in the New Year, sometime.

Premium and ecofriendly are polar opposites. Less seats means more planes in the air rather than less.

This is kind of confusing for me, they said "premium". But what does it mean in this context though.

They didn't specify much information regarding the LOPAS or the seat itself. So in this particular instances, I think the premium label applies to the service rather than the capacity of the aircraft.
