For the second time this year, an atmospheric river is forcing all arrival and departure traffic on the 19's with the very rare departure towards the hills in Millbrae. Current METAR:

19L is 8650' long and 19R is 7650' long. If they are taking off into a 25 kt headwind right down the centerline, a widebody shouldn't have too many issues getting off the ground. KLM even uses the 01's on departures to AMS with little to no headwind.

Looks like KLM282 to AMS just used 28R, so it looks like the heavies might be opting for the longer RWY now that the wind has shifted a little and calmed:

I once flew out of SFO on a VS 744 and it departed on the 01's...rotation was just past crossing 28R. So I wouldn't have thought a 19 departure to be that problamatic.

There were some departures taking off of the 10s. Not everything was departing the 19s. But yeah, would love to see a video of that.

In fact in last month's rain/storm event, all heavies were departing 01s. Amazing to see KLM (AMS), AF (CDG) and QR (DOH) taking off towards oakland.

KLM does it every day pretty much, they always take off on the 01s, storm or no storm.

Much shorter taxi to the 01's than to the 28's from the A-gates, too. I know this is getting off-topic, but I have always wondered if full power take-off's on the 01's to save a few minutes is worth it relative to using flex/lower thrust on take-off on the 28's from a maintenance/fuel burn perspective...assuming wind direction and traffic flows are not dictating. KLM must know what they are doing, so I guess the math works out for them.

QR does as well, which is pretty amazing for the length of that flight.
