I'm hoping for more connecting-the-dots this year, especially out of BOI and GEG. But I'm also hoping for a couple of new links to smaller CA communities like ACV and BFL.

I would agree with you more connecting of the dots from BOI and GEG… BOI so likely to gain more if so though

I look for AS to make a run at getting SWA to pull back in BOI. I look for BOI to add LAS PHX OAK DEN RNO BUR SNA

Is AS getting any more E75s this year (or expanding the SkyWest contract) to do that sort of thing in 2022?

Could someone point me to a list of which 737-900ERs are ETOPS rated?
I see they've upped ANC-HNL to a 739 sometimes, instead of the typical 738.

Bit of hiring news from QX. They now have FO listings for pilots meeting minimums and one for pilots who will meet the minimums within 6 months.
Also QX is advertising an ANC base which should help the increased flying in Alaska.

https://alaskafleetstatus.weebly.com/737-900er.html

It looks like all -900ERs were delivered ETOPS certified until March of 2016...all deliveries thereafter are not. All MAX-9 deliveries so far are ETOPS.

The thing is I don’t think WN will get pushed out of its core markets especially DEN,LAS,OAK,PHX

Yep. Although it's not all bad since SFO-GEG gains extra frequencies.

I'm still waiting for AS to re-add SFO-KOA/LIH...

I would be surprised if AS adds any flights or destinations out of OAK, since they got rid of ALL HI flights and reduced frequency to both PDX and SEA. OAK is pretty low on Alaska's list.

It would be nice if they tried some triangle routings on their Hawaii flights. They really don’t have a good inter island solution for people that want to go to different islands, Or switch islands between their trips. It sucks that they don’t have relationship with Hawaiian. If you take ANCHNL for example your options can be pretty bleak.

AS had a relationship with HA a long time ago until AS started service to HI on their own. I think AS tried having an interisland ally when Mokulele briefly flew E-170's, but that died off pretty quickly. I never understood why they didn't try entering into a relationship with Island Air while they were around.

OO has 8 175s arriving in 2022 for AS.

QX has 5 arriving in 2022 and 4 arriving in 2023.

So...13 more E-175's for AS this year and 4 more next year. That is in addition to a large number of 737 MAX 9's AS is set to receive this year.

I had a couple transcon flights booked with AS this month booked on the 7M9s that have been changed to the 739ER/738. Noticed they removed the MAX from a whole lot of other flights this month as well. A little disappointed as I was looking forward to my first ride on the MAX but of course these things happen. Does anyone know why they have been removed from these transcon flights? Late deliveries possibly?

Alaska has been known to put bigger planes where they can sell more sets so it’s possible they’re just swapping them are ours. I’ve noticed a lot more going to ANC all of a sudden. If it’s close in then might have been putting bigger planes on routes to clean up this winter storm mess

I don't there is an appreciable difference the 737 MAX 9 and the 737-900/-900ER, other than the current numbers of them. It will take a while for AS to get the number of MAX 9's to a level where they can have widespread use.

I wonder if AS will convert any of their MAX 9 orders to either MAX 10's or MAX 7's.

It seems as is pushing more out of SFO and downsizing at OAK and even SJC. It’s becoming a serious hub

They should make SFO a serious hub considering how many gates they have there.

They are contrary to the San Francisco forum on here. Lounge and all. But that might change since deltas terminal I think is going to be torn down, no one’s sure.

I could see them switching some orders over to MAX 10s, but I doubt they'll go for the MAX 7, though I'd love to be proven wrong. My recollection might be incorrect, but I thought that the only reason the pax -700s are still around is because AS owns them outright, the leased frames having been returned.

You mean bring all those discontinued OR and MT flights? I hope so. I would mind seeing routes like PDX-RDD and PDX-MRY.

I hope they rebuild MFR-PDX for connections. Cut to shreds currently. And bring back the morning MFR-LAX and evening return, if not in fact adding a second flight (or more). I was using the AM south and the PM north connections to my Jordan/Egypt trip (connect to QR) but with their change to mid-day screwing that, I have to take AA/Eagle via PHX now in both directions. (MFR via PDX no longer works either.) Doing MFR-PHX-LAX-DOH-AMM//CAI-DOH-LAX-PHX-MFR. (Wish me luck...MFR-PHX-MFR is currently scheduled on Mesa, not OO. Gulp..)

Any thoughts on AS’ operations from DAL? I know that they dropped several VX markets during/after the merger; however, now that they are with oneWorld, would it make any sense to add 1 or 2 destinations from DAL that AS could fly allowing a oneWorld code?

I know there is a lot of lift between the entire DFW/DAL market and DEN, but do you think AS could jump into it from DAL?

It appears AS has managed to hold solid load factors from DAL with the cities *currently* served (obviously there’s some that have flopped in the past), it just seems like it could be a good time to test the waters and see what sticks — adding additional oneWorld presence to the local market.

That wouldn't surprise me. The -700s seem to serve well as combis and the 175s can handle any route AS seems to put the pax -700s on unless I'm missing a long/thin route somewhere. Is there any Intel on AS plans for expanding dedicated freight ops with converted -700s?

It’s early, and will likely change, but OAK-SEA is up to 6x daily this summer. First real increase in service for AS at OAK since starting Hawaii ten years ago.

Not sure about all the routes in Alaska cus there’s a lot of bags and cargo. Also not sure if Alaska wants regional pilots operating into southeast Alaska regularly

AS re-adding DAL-SAN nonstop service might make sense as AS would have AA's FF base in the DFW/DAL market in addition to AS's FF base in Greater San Diego to support the return of AS DAL-SAN nonstop service.

AS adding DAL-BOI nonstop service might also be a possibility with AS having recently added nonstop service out of BOI to some other non-AS hub destinations. AS can also more easily fill an E-175 regional jet on DAL-BOI whereas WN was using 737-700's on the DAL-BOI route.

theAviationGeek wrote:

There is already a significant amount of nonstop service between DFW/DAL and DEN, with AA operating 11x, WN operating 9x, UA operating 6x, and F9 operating 2x on DFW/DAL-DEN in Summer 2022. WN also has significant point-of-sale on both ends of the DAL-DEN route and significant FF bases in both markets.

AS is less likely to add DAL-DEN, especially with the nonstop options that are already there between DFW/DAL and DEN.

PHX is currently operated and LAS starts next summer.

Source for “it’s looking”? Or are you speculating. I haven’t seen any indication AS intends to convert its remaining 737-700s.

Yes...no source...it's just my humbled opinion and speculation. Their -700's are getting pretty old and some of the markets like BRW or OTZ are too small of their -900's or MAX 9's. Also, I think the E-175's are too small for these markets. But, yes, all speculation.

I think you’re confusing who I was responding to. I was asking cardude for a source for more freighter conversions of 737-700 fleet.

I could see them switching some orders over to MAX 10s, but I doubt they'll go for the MAX 7, though I'd love to be proven wrong. My recollection might be incorrect, but I thought that the only reason the pax -700s are still around is because AS owns them outright, the leased frames having been returned.

That wouldn't surprise me. The -700s seem to serve well as combis and the 175s can handle any route AS seems to put the pax -700s on unless I'm missing a long/thin route somewhere. Is there any Intel on AS plans for expanding dedicated freight ops with converted -700s?

The -700's fly only in either freighter configuration or the full-pax configuration. AS doesn't want -700 Combis because the FAA won't allow for movable bulkheads.

I would be surprised if AS adds any flights or destinations out of OAK, since they got rid of ALL HI flights and reduced frequency to both PDX and SEA. OAK is pretty low on Alaska's list.

It’s early, and will likely change, but OAK-SEA is up to 6x daily this summer. First real increase in service for AS at OAK since starting Hawaii ten years ago.

But that will only be for the summer (peak) period.

I think there might be more. The -400 combis didn't have moveable bulkheads, only the pigs.

I think they were still technically moveable. And they were approved before the faa cracked down

There is no source but wedge tail is right those planes need replacing very shortly as they’re getting old with mechanical problems for pax use. It just seems like that’s what they’re gonna do because otherwise there’s absolutely no reason for as to put the E175 in Alaska Other than replacement along with expansion. 737 700 in Alaska’s fleet is a black sheep. They only use them in Alaska because everywhere else they’re not great for their use case, that’s why they returned all those leases of 737 700s and a319’s very quickly.

Why does it seem like they’re gonna convert more aircraft to freighter versus just retire them? You’re making a lot of broad assumptions and speculating but stating as fact.

Right now the SE Alaska EAS cities are bid through April 2023 with the 700 (124 seats). In the past they would bid them with the 400 combi which had 72 seats. They will need to have some plan moving forward on those routes (Cordova, Yakutat, Petersburg and Wrangell year-round, and Gustavus in the summer) if they do phase out the 700 in the future. Occasionally these routes are upgauged at Alaska's cost but that wouldn't be a long term plan in the Southeast.

The only other EAS route they have is Adak which runs through September 2023 with the 700.

You can write for an amendment to EAS based on available equipment. It could open up the hidden to others but Alaska will still win.

I do think they can use a few more freighters but I heard they were gonna do 800s next

The -700's aren't exclusively AK and SEA. AS does use the -700's around the West Coast region. Right now, there are -700 flights to BUR and SNA from SEA. Every once in a while, they will sub a -700 to other places like ORD and OAK. Although AS only has a handful of them right now, they are a pretty versatile airplane. They were very effective at BUR and SNA were runways are pretty short. But we all know that SNA can handle -800's and BUR can handle the -900ER's.

There has been scuttlebutt that AS would would like another freighter, and since the current freighters are all 737-700F, for commonality it seems they'd like another 737-700F. The Current 737-700Fs were all previous AS passenger planes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 700 fleet given new cabins in 2018-19?

Yes, I recall that discussion, as well as some discussion AS was interested in the -800 but didn’t want to give up any passenger aircraft. But, in no way was the discussion 10 more conversions of all remaining -700s.
