they may have flown Convair 600's for awhile following the Central Airlines buyout by Frontier, but those were phased out for the 580's

Based on news and tweets out there we can basically narrow down first day for the new terminal down to 2 days.

ABQ and IND come back for WN, in addition to added frequencies to LAX, MDW, PHX, and SAN. Looks like WN is taking advantage of the additional gate space and staffing.

I believe we’re just missing MSP and MKE as far as restoring pre-Covid offerings. BOS is missing too but I think B6 and DL pushed them off. Still would be nice to land new routes with high demand i.e PIT, SNA, SJC etc.

Also PDX appears to be performing well, not sure why it’s seasonal on WN and AS. Per Justin’s Twitter post. Hinting at mainline service next year on AS?

Mainline would be great, but they didn't even operate daily for the whole summer this year. More mainline planes are coming on every few weeks and many fewer regionals with the Qs going- so maybe that will push it over the edge. MCI-PDX has been mainline before in placeholder schedules (along with the illusive 3rd daily Seattle). It really seems like, in the summer at least, Alaska is under serving the market here. I think MCI is ready to support four mainline flights on AS during peak times, just need AS to think so as well.

Well, the industry and country were different then. The interstate highway system wasn't done and just about anything that wasn't an interstate was a 2-lane road that went through the downtown of every city or town on the way. There was no TSA and the design of the soon-to-be-closed MCI terminals reflects the goal of getting travelers from their cars to their flights as quickly as possible. The (regulated) airlines were profitable at load factors which would be considered ruinous by today's standards. And, of course, the airlines used to run a lot more multi-stop flights; most of those MCI-OMA flights on BN continued on to MSP and the OMA-MCI flights would go on to places like MSY, DAL, OKC, etc.

Heard a rumor in KC that British Airways is coming to town in 2023. Civic booster type with no ties to aviation forums. Service would not be daily. I give it a 50-50 chance now of MCI vs IND.

Agree but to be fair, the speculation of IND came before MCI ponied up the $5 million incentives package. That was IND's only real advantage over KC, but I guess that depends how far along negotiations were with IND and if BA is open to last minute offers.

You must not be too familiar with the Sun Country network. Most of their routes are ex MSP and most new adds, particularly summer adds start at 2x weekly. If it performs well it’ll likely go to 4x weekly the following year.

A low-cost air carrier will offer passenger flights at Kansas City International Airport next summer, becoming the first new airline to launch service at the airport’s new single terminal, according to a news release from the Kansas City Aviation Department.

Based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Sun Country Airlines will begin nonstop service from Kansas City to the Twin Cities beginning May 29, with seasonal flight service on Mondays and Fridays.

“Sun Country’s decision to add Kansas City to their growing network is a testament to the strength of the KC region’s demand for travel and will bring more nonstop options to travelers looking to enjoy the Twin Cities during peak season,” Pat Klein, director of Kansas City’s Aviation Department, said in the news release.

My narrow down to 2 days was good with the data I had at the time but some details have changed since then so I’m backing off my original days now.

But you can figure out it has to be a weekday that isn’t Monday based on the times posted for the gate changes.

The PMG status reports have been consistently listing March 3 as opening day, here is the link to the most recent: https://www.buildkci.com/wp-content/upl ... 8.2022.pdf

Perhaps curiously, August is the last report posted, the reports have been posted until now just over 30 days after the close of the status month (August posted the first week of October), however the September report has not posted yet. I am wondering if there may have been an inadvertent mention of an airline with respect to the added ‘north lounge’ on concourse A north.

They don't have 700s so it was a 900. Pretty sure Justin's post said 900 also

For many years, AC operated a modified CRJ900 and called it the "705". I believe they recently changed it back to the "900" but they're basically the same aircraft.

Heard a rumor that there's not enough ramp space on the north side for two 737s to safely pass (1 in, 1 out), which could lead to traffic issues in that corner.

Any truth to this? Figured that'd been assessed in the planning phase.

I just did a quick measure on Google Earth, so this is an educated guess rather than from an airport design-expertise point of view. So who knows if there is something that would prevent this aside from space.

Distance between concourses-

New MCI: 800'
MDW: 750' - dual taxi lanes painted
PHX: 650' - dual taxi lanes painted
ORD (B & C) - 800' - dual taxi lanes painted

Substantial Completion today. Its pretty much just tenant build-out left.

Once the new terminal opens, the next phase of demo and construction can start

Between concourses is double. West of terminal is triple. south is double. north is double but down to single for the 2 or 3 Eastern A gates

Thanks for the info. The eastern A gates are probably those in question. Although doesn't seem like a big deal if there's only 2 or 3 gates back there.

B6 will be upgrading flights to the A320 and A321 on certain days during the holiday season until the first part of January. Quite the jump considering the mixed loads I keep hearing about on here. Maybe within two years a permanent switch to the A320 could be in order.

In addition, AS will bring back MCI-PDX this late spring on the 739.

I've been keeping an eye out for the AS summer bump to MCI, looks like they are teasing us again with PDX mainline and triple daily SEA. I think this is the third year it has been scheduled? Obviously for various reasons it never happened. Hopefully with the combination of fewer regional planes and a glut of MAX deliveries this will become a reality, finally.

June 15th - August 14th
MCI - SEA 7:00am
MCI - SEA 2:00pm
MCI - PDX 2:55pm
MCI - SEA 7:55pm

They're also adjusting their schedule temporarily. JFK-MCI is RON and departs in the morning MCI-JFK which means they're operating as turns as opposed to the normal BOS-MCI-JFK.

I'm wondering if this is more about aircraft availability over demand. E190s are probably being deployed elsewhere and A220s are in short supply. I would think that in 2 years I'd rather see extra frequencies as opposed to A320s. The A220 is a nice plane and I'd ride on that any day over an A320. I flew B6 out of MCI back in April after it just started and I heard JFK was stronger than BOS which makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see BOS drop later on in favor of another JFK frequency. I actually think it would work better that way down the road.

Any additional WN connections being routed through MCI with the new terminal opening?

I am sure it doesn't hurt. At this point looks like mostly just bringing flights back from pre-covid, which has been a system wide thing.

United added quite a bit of capacity over the summer at MCI via frequencies or larger aircraft. Good to see as they are the smallest mainline carrier at MCI.

Agree likely due to availability. BOS-MCI in particular has struggled, at least from a LF perspective.

Southwest is bringing back its nonstop flights from KCI to three additional cities this summer after the airport’s new single terminal opens. The airline has been increasing its services from Kansas City, and now it is slated to have seasonal, nonstop service to Milwaukee, Minneapolis and San Antonio starting in July.

“As we continue to add depth to existing markets in our Network, we’re happy to return this seasonal service,” Southwest spokesperson Chris Perry said in an emailed statement.

UA is exploring adding TPA/MCO to MCI with their new bases. Would be nice to have a full service carrier to Florida since DL ended MCO years ago. It's all LCC/ULCC currently.
