I would luv it if WN finally added IND-BNA, but me thinks it won’t happen until more gates are online at BNA.

Doubtful...
Too short of a route, with no real connection advantage over the existing non-stops.

Contour's service is getting 25-30 on peak days, WN could likely get 50?

I don't pay much attention to WN. Did they permanently drop IND-MDW and IND-STL? IND-BNA is much further than MDW and slightly further than STL. So I was wondering.

WN was already planning on dropping IND-MDW nonstop service prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and IND-STL nonstop service got dropped by WN due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WN still has daily nonstop service to MDW from GRR, despite WN having very little O&D on the MDW-GRR route, but GRR is a different market than IND is for WN with
(a) GRR being located north of Chicago whereas IND is located south of Chicago,
(b) GRR being a much smaller WN station than IND, and
(c) WN having nonstop service to AUS, DAL, HOU, LAS, and PHX out of IND whereas GRR doesn't have nonstop service to AUS, DAL, HOU, LAS, or PHX on WN.

Well that was fast . Start the New Route Counter already. ( yes I know there’s only 1 In/outbound flight of these but they count on my book)

Happy your going to the game and sorry I misunderstood but being on here for as long as I have, I’ve seen posts that seem to mean one thing but then mean something else. I didn’t mean to offend by capitalizing, I see now how that can look like I posted that to be a wise guy but that was not my intention.
Happy New Year.

well last year for 2021, I wrote "Florida, Florida, Florida" and i wasn't too far off.

i think for 2022, we'll continue to see more of the same and some of the carriers still battling it out on the Florida routes.

i will be curious to see if Spirit makes a move into Destin/Ft Walton Beach and cherry picks a few routes into the midwest. if so, i'd put IND on that list.

i'll toss out some guesses in Allegiant adding Melbourne/Orlando or possibly Asheville in a base-to-base connection. am curious to see what their intentions are for Rapid City in 2022.

American has a pretty solid existing network and i don't see it changing much.

Delta - i see the focus remaining on their major hubs and not much changing here.

United - i would love to see all their additions from last year stay. the more service, the merrier.

if there's positivity on the COVID-19 front, towards the end of the year we might start hearing some fun things on the 2023 schedule:

Alaska to Portland summer seasonal.

Transatlantic services being mentioned or announced. i will put my guess on Aer Lingus.

Here’s a good one. Say the Airport revealed a Improvement plan to be done by 2040. What would you like to see on it? Any Addition of Gates? More Baggage Belts? ( note can’t be I want X airline here.had to be about the airport rather than air service )

For me what i would want is. On-site Hotel, Clear ( great for Biz travelers) 2-4 more security lanes. 2 more baggage belts. Rail Station at IND ( Amtrak or Brightline )

For a 2040/2050 plan-

It would be nice to see air travel numbers bump up to see a build out of A and B with the addition of gates 1 and 2 on each side to be necessary with the means and reason to expand and rethink the CIS configuration.

A common-use airport lounge.

In the spirit of moving towards more sustainable options - a tram/passenger transit system from parking lots and drop off areas to terminal.

Repurposing of the security areas - send crew/pre-check/CLEAR/and whatever else we've come up by then through one side and everyone else goes to another.

Observation deck. :)

What was the expansion plan laid out in the original terminal designs? Would hope more than 2-4 gates will be needed in 30 years.....

The biggest change I desire is moving security before concessions

I can't find it, but I recall seeing a plan that allowed for 5 additional gates each at the end of A & B to have a total of 50 gates. It also showed an "X" shaped terminal to the north east of the current terminal to allow for additional gates. That's obviously decades in the future.

What they have now isn't going to work for IND for 18 more years. They will need to expand well before then.

  • Expanded customs/immigration facilities (should be easy by eliminating the green space adjacent to the existing facilities)
  • Light or elevated rail connection to downtown
  • Moving walkway between A and B concourses
  • Gate expansion (original plans cover this)
  • On-site hotel (was proposed in 2018)
  • Giant ball pit for use during delays (okay just kidding)

How many gates is this currently terminal suppose to have when fully built?

Do we really need more gate space?

Sticking the original design projections/dream/anticipations, each concourse is supposed to be, at least, expanded with an additional 10 gates each.

Also why did they build customs so small to start with? I remember going thru the “barn” at the old customs facility coming back from Cancun.

You'd have to call up the architecture and ask them directly. But in working in communications with a number of construction companies, I can tell you new builds often incorporate anticipated advances of technology and new, efficient procedures into the design.

I.E. - when they were designing the space, they weren't building it for the processes and procedures of 2005, but for the processes and procedures of the year 2025, or what have you - no reason to build a space of 10 lanes to process 200 people in under an hour when you can use new forms, software, etc., and have just 2 lanes and still process 200 people in under an hour.

I can understand the concept of planning for future technology, but this doesn't help answer why the baggage claim area is so small. All the technology in the world isn't going to help this issue. I think the quick and easy solution to that could be a moveable wall around the bag claim closest to the immigration exit door that can be used during peak times.

I dunno, I guess someone missed the memo the baggage claim and customs area should be big enough for all 300 people at once can grab their bags simultaneously and make it out of customs at exactly the same time for the plethora of widebody international flights which are currently serving the airport.

I foresee a day where IND will see several widebody flights a day. I'm talking about several flights to Europe and a flight to Asia. There's no doubt in my mind that British Airways, KLM or Air France, Lufthansa or Eurowings, Emirates or Turkish, and Hawaiian could provide long haul widebody service from IND by 2030.

IND will likely get 1 more flight to Europe at most by 2030 (including BA), Emirates & Turkish have much bigger fish to fry in the US and IND isn't one of them

The discussion was assuming the area was designed to be forward-looking. You can speed up processing immigration a lot (and that certainly has happened). But you cannot do much to speed up unloading bags, putting them on a belt and having enough room for people to get them. Travelers (on this forum) have already reported the area being overcrowded.

By the year 2040 (yes, the discussion was what they should have by 2040 - 18 years from now) it is likely that Indianapois will have more than one international arrival nearly simultaneously (at least on occasion). Could be Cancun + London - or could even be London + Tokyo. Who knows? We are talking about 18 years in the future, it's speculation and nothing more. We'd probably have been laughed off the boards in 2001 for speculating that in 2019 Indianapolis would have daily nonstop service to Paris on a widebody, but there we were.

Which might explain why they didn’t have exhaust fans for the bag room in the original design, and had to add them later??

So someone experienced a baggage claim area as a baggage claim area and not the Dubai airport experience and someone had to sit and smell their own gas since an exhaust fan wasn't installed during the initial build.

I dunno -- tear it all down and rebuild?

To be fair I think stlgph is saying, IND with the new terminal was looking ahead on a lot of things, and look to progress in the new technology, but IND did probably miss things that should have been in the design but arent. Its always cheaper to build now, than later.
I am in the construction industry. I have seen interstates built, and within 6-10 years we have torn out the existing and added more lanes, and new exits with bridges, drainage, walls, list goes on. I was simply saying when I orginally asked why did they ( IND ) build customs so small, I have seen referenced here a few times, from folks that say it is small . If that is so, why not build bigger? Put up a temporary wall until that area needs to expand ? Obviously IND is not seeing widebody flights or international traffic currently.
I don't think IND will be tearing down this terminal for years to come. So why not build those areas, baggage / customs / space for lounges whatever just a little bit bigger for future growth?

Question: Is there enough room for AA to add a lounge if they wanted, but DL wanted to keep their lounge? Room for 2??

I agree that IND was looking ahead on a lot of things - and did a wondeful job of it. The discussion is about what should they look ahead to in 18 years - and for some reason stlgph seems to think that the current facilities are fine for now and for 18 years in the future. Sure, they are fine now. Just 2 years ago there were a couple times where 3 international arrivals were scheduled within a few minutes of each other. That was going to be a mess.

Like you said, it is cheaper to build now, than build later - I think not building a larger customs area (when the free space exists right next to it) was a bit short sighted. That taken into consideration - we aren't looking back, but looking forward - and looking forward says by 2040 that area is going to need to be larger, no matter what was thought about in 2005. It will be 2040, not 2005 or 2025. The space is there - the green space to the south or the first baggage claim (if using a moveable wall for the occasions when needed).

I think so - so long as they get creative. I'm not there to wander around looking, but, for instance you extend the customs area there is place for a club room directly above it (adjacent to Delta's). You could also build something in the elbow on the southwest side of Concourse B. Right now there is some sort of loading dock/parking area there - something you could slap something on top of (if you really wanted to).

Allegiant has had a big route announcement every year (sans 2019) for the past 5 years on the Tuesday of the second week of January.

IND has also had a non-G4 related route announcement every January(sans 2019) since 2014, and a G4 announcement every year sans 2019/2020.

Just saying.....

Incorrect. I never said facilities are fine now and 18 years in the future. Good god - the "new" terminal we have now (which is now already 14 years old) was designed in the mid-late 1990s and came into realization in 2008 with the ability to change/adapt facilities as needed, which it's able to do, as needed, but has proven to be fully functional as it has been needed.

But for whatever the reason you're entirely hung up on the size of a baggage claim area and apparently it's ruining *everything* about the entire airport, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I dunno what to tell you man, must be a hit at parties....that's for sure.

Ruining everything? Hyperbole much? I said it was short sighted and implied it needs to be fixed before 2040. I never said it was runing "the entire airport, yesterday, today, and tomorrow" or anything even remotely close to it.

NK having some fun with some last minute Spring Break boosts

For peak Spring Break:
IND-MCO is scheduled for 3x daily
IND-TPA is scheduled for 2x daily
IND-RSW will be 3x a day for Tu/Thu/Sun

In addition to previous boosts to FLL, NK will be up to 11 flights a day depending on the day of the week.

There are 52 flights to Florida scheduled for Saturday Spring Break time, and 15 of those are just to Orlando....
