I applaud your restraint in not creating yet another 'off the runway' thread.

PVD can likely support the return of WN PVD-DEN nonstop service as
(a) an average of more than 193 passengers/day in each direction were connecting to DEN or domestic destinations further west from PVD in Q2 2021,
(b) WN was able to make PVD-DEN nonstop service work after adding BOS-DEN nonstop service but prior to dropping PVD-DEN nonstop service, and
(c) WN has less nonstop service to the Western U.S. from BWI in Summer 2022 than it did prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BDL's daily nonstop to IAH goes from United Express (Embraer 175) to United mainline (Airbus 319) on March 4, 2022.

I wish WN felt the same way. I have no doubt that PVD-DEN would be successful on a year-round basis, but the 600 lb gorilla is 60 miles up the road. WN will take any means to keep demand high on BOS-DEN, especially during winter months, which means stripping PVD of virtually all of its westbound service for several months. BOS needs multiple frequencies on BOS-DEN to maintain a competitive product, and they need some of those 193 PVD passengers on them to fill them up.

That said, the calculus changes when a fleet of Max7s and DEN's new gates are operational. Until then, aircraft are a commodity that needs to produce maximum profit. Long thin routes need not apply.

That's a much more appropriate aircraft for that route. The economics of 76 seats flying 4 hours are atrocious

The first flight on the 4th per United's bookings, is showing a 739. After that, goes to A319.

The 193 passenger count does not even account for leakage to BOS that already exists on the route. The Southern NE passenger in general is willing to pay a modest premium all around for nonstop service out of PVD though up at BOS, flights are often priced in the cellar due to hammering competition from B6 and UA. One would think WN would move one DEN flight back South for a little better yield from an airport with much cheaper CPE but they are locked in that fight. I recall back in the PVD DEN days that WN was not so pleased with so many through PVD passengers that would continue onto destinations with fares lower than DEN, the connecting airport. Don't think that would be the case today.

great to see. the IAH flight was UA’s longest regional flight the last time i checked (a few years ago). although i slightly prefer the ride in the 175, superior IRROPS recovery for mainline ops is more significant to me.

IAH enables a ton of one-stop routes to central and south america from BDL, and complements many of the west coast connections currently served via DEN.

I agree. It is a shame United could not make SFO work but they have a decent operation that is right sized for the kind of market BDL is.

UA has operated E-175 regional jets on some routes longer than BDL-IAH such as ORD-FAT/EUG and SFO-MSN/STL, and UA still plans on resuming ORD-FAT/EUG and SFO-MSN/STL nonstop service later this year.

PWM’s primary runway will be closed for two months this spring. Should be interesting watching all commercial flights use the secondary runway.

The secondary is occasionally used when the winds are strong north /south, but it’s not particularly often. There is no ILs for the secondary. Only RNAV approaches.

I remember the last time they rehabbed the main runway in 2004 and all flights had to use the secondary for several months. I look forward to seeing Big boys use the secondary. Especially FedEx 757 and A300’s. I’ve seen both of use the secondary before. Nevertheless, it’s kind of near seeing the airliners only using runway 18\36.

I’ll be interesting to see how the airlines handle their late night scheduled flights that are planned and put in system months in advance During the time period when no flights will be accommodated after 10:30 PM

The secondary runway was extended to 6100' a few years ago which is at least an improvement over the last resurfacing project back in 2004. Will be better than landing at SNA (5700') or EYW (5000') and should be really entertaining for residents of the new cluster of apartment buildings (Riverbrook) that align with 18/36!

This far ahead, I would.presume carriers have the opportunity to adjust their equipment choices for that period or plan on reduced weight. SNA and EYW weather is a bit different than coastal Maine at that time of year to their benefit.

It’s not about equipment. Even FedEx A300s have used 18/36.

If you read the article it says all fixed wing operations will stop from 10:30p-6am during part of this reconstruction. And there are scheduled flights that arrive until after midnight.

May 16 is far enough away that it will allow the airlines to adjust accordingly. Most schedules aren't firmed past March at the moment. Having just gone through the exact same type of operational restriction at PVD with runway intersection work this past summer, I can say the airlines will absolutely be on top of advance scheduling changes and last minute issues. If any flight looks like it'll come close to not making it in before 22:30, that flight's respective SOC will be on the phone with PWM airport ops in a heartbeat.

I would assume the W is from Westbrook, the community just west of the airport and perhaps the municipal boundaries previously included the airport

The "W" is for Westbrook which is a small suburb city to the west of Portland which was used as the last directional light/marker during the approach to the airport in the old days. The "M" actually stands for Municipal.

As somebody else mentioed, the “W” stands for Westbrook, which is the next town over from Portland.

When the airport was originally built back in the 1920s or 30s it was known as the Portland Westbrook Municipal Airport.
later changed to Portland International Jetport when Northeast Air “Yellowbird”introduced jet service in the late 1960s. and also to differentiate it from Portland international Airport in Portland, Oregon.
The international label indicates that there are Customs/Immigration facilities available to process international arrivals )

Thanks everyone for the replies about PWM.

I like that historical connection. It reminds me of the occasional instrument approach and enroute fixes that celebrate local lore. Like APPLE and RUUTH on the approach to New York.

It also puts PWM in a rare group where the 3-letter code isn’t simply made up of letters from the city name. ORD, GEG, MCI are in the group. I’m sure there are others.

Breeze Airways A220 will make its debut on flights out of BDL starting June 2. Not every frequency on the following routes will be operated by the Airbus A220. Nonetheless exciting as I think this will be the first A220 at BDL. https://thepointsguy.com/news/breeze-ai ... 20-routes/

Each month, PVD will gradually get more frequencies as reportedly, MX is quite pleased with performance thus far, and future potential there.

I always thought that was a oddball route for a ULCC. For the ULCC model it needs to be high O&D and usually leisure-oriented. AA is back up to 2x DFW on peak days, neither end has a leisure component and its high aircraft utilization (9 hours r/t with the turn built in). They should have beaten MX to the punch on MSY.

I'm wondering how dropping every route it started, except for MCO, is successful.

What routes has Frontier dropped from BDL since starting service in March of 2019? The only year round flight is MCO and some days 2x with A321 service, the rest have always been seasonal.

ATL 4x weekly
RDU 4x weekly
DEN 4x weekly
SJU 3x weekly
MIA 3x weekly

They have not dropped any route since they started service, and other than not starting the planned DFW route, all others have stuck. I’m guessing all is well with the station.

Frontiers model requires them to shift or cancel routes often. They only fly routes that make money and will shift to another that can make a penny more. Nothing at all specific to any city that's just being a ULCC.

In March JetBlue will be doing 3x daily BDL-SJU. Additionally Frontier will be flying that route 3x weekly.

So some days there will be 4x A320 to SJU.

These never went away. Most of their routes out of BDL have performed up to or better than expectations.

If not for the focus on LGA/JFK this summer, they probably would've launched more routes out of BDL. I think BDL-JFK/SDQ are some obvious ones they can try.

Well, they did for May 2020 until December holidays 2020, then SFO/LAS went away again from January 5, 2021 to May 6, and LAX from March 1 to May 6.

I have a question for anyone familiar with BDL. I'm flying a STL-BNA-BDL-BNA-STL day trip in Feb with a 2.5 hour wait in BDL before the return. It is my plan to eat lunch at BDL before returning to STL and there is a food court on the airport's website but I can't really see if it's before or after security. All help appreciated.

It is in the secure side. I don't know if everything is open.

F9 also
Adding BDL-CUN this Feb. This should be interesting, as BDL international terminal has one jetbridge. When B6 arrives and F9 still at gate…ow the drama!!

Last virtual pocket session B6 no new routes coming to BDL. Just added frequency to current schedule. March and February vacation times get more flights.

What are you talking about? BDL-SFO/LAX/LAS/CUN didn't even start until November/December 2020.

Most restaurants and shops are open at BDL minus a couple like Traveltini, iStore and Brooks Brothers.

Behind security you have Black Bear Saloon which is decent, Phillips Seafood, Two Roads Tap Room, Papa Gino's (decent pizza), D'Angelo's (decent subs), McDonalds, and Fresh City. There is an Escape lounge as well if you have an AMX Platinum card which is open fully now. There is also multiple Dunkin Donuts and a Jamba Juice which may be closed.

Before security there is a Starbucks and a decent restaurant inside the Sheraton Hotel which is connected to the airport.
