Yesterday DL inaugurated A333 services from ATL-MBJ. DL last operated widebody services on the route with their B763ERs during the early 2000s.

So B6's love affair with Jamaica continues. By summer they will be operating 9x daily from JFK to the island. More than likely the majority of those rotations will be on the A321s.

"In what is being hailed as a huge boost to Jamaica's tourism industry, JetBlue will, by June, operate up to nine daily non-stop flights into Jamaica from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport."

Very impressive the number of wide bodies that have been operating to the island since the latter part of 2021 into the 2022 from AA, AC & now DL with the 787s & A330s respectively despite the challenging times with the pandemic. It should also be noted that despite Canada's planned restriction of flights to Mexico & the Caribbean for a few months, Jamaica was not on the list of destinations and flights will continue to operate as scheduled albeit recent adjustment with the 787s to KIN which now sees the A321s.

Jamaica is expected to start receiving three flights per week from the European countries of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Flights are scheduled to land in Montego Bay, St James, by TUI Belgium and TUI Netherlands by April of this year.

The development comes as Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett and a small team participates in FITUR, currently the world's largest annual international travel and tourism trade show in Madrid, Spain.

“These flights bring back the Belgian and Netherlands tourism markets to where we were prior to the pandemic which is really good news,” said Bartlett.

AA will launch year-round AUS-MBJ services. Flights are scheduled on Saturdays using an Envoy E175.

The outbound flight leaves at 8 a.m. and arrives in Jamaica at 11:23 a.m.
The inbound flight departs at 12:03 p.m. and arrives in Austin at 3:53 p.m.

So far:
- WS has cancelled a few flights to MBJ
-AC sent their B38M instead of the B787 twice this week.

I expect them to launch Mint Services to MBJ by winter.

So B6 launching Mint Service to MBJ next winter is highly unlikely.
They're wanting to launch Mint Service to Hawaii and that's delayed because we simply don't have enough Mint planes at present for extra flying.....sorry.

These were at 2 weekly. Recently an ad was posted promoting the route. Clearly an indication of their plans to re enter the Montego Bay tourist market.

This would be a game changer. However, an interesting market..

Minister Bartlett is scheduled to meet Ahmed Al-Khateeb, minister of tourism for Saudi Arabia, later today to finalise the deal.

Bartlett confirmed an air link between the two countries is the top priority for the memorandum.

Any route, likely to be operated by Saudi flag-carrier Saudia, would allow visitors from the Middle East to visit the Caribbean destination without the need to pass through the United States, reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

Re: Jamaican Aviation Thread - 2022

Frontier has announced a 3 weekly MIA-KIN service. Beginning May 5, 2022, flights will operate Sun, Tues and Thurs.

https://www.travelpulse.com/news/airlin ... miami.html

“We’re thrilled to launch service between Miami and Kingston, the bustling capital city of Jamaica,” Frontier senior vice president Daniel Shurz said. “Kingston is home to an array of fascinating tourism and rich historical sites as well as providing easy access to Jamaica’s stunning mountains and beaches.”

Last year their Sales Team travelled to KIN and met with JTB and local travel agents. The merger with NK will give them access to KIN-FLL.

Great that there will now be a choice of 2 carriers on the KIN-MIA route that AA enjoyed a monopoly on for many years. I would never have predicted that F9 would have grown so much at MIA

I saw it coming. The upcoming merger with NK will open many opportunities especially from the Northeast. I see EWR-KIN.

If Air Century is running flights to KIN and these arent bookable then it is some sort of charter. Even BW is running KIN Managua flights recently.

Arajet is announcing loads of routes and I bet that KIN isnt at the top of the list, given the very limited travel between Jamaica and the DR. Has Sky High begun its SDQ KIN route yet? Because with a 50 seater jet this is most suited to this route, and best replaces JYs services that they were forced to shut down on this route. They might even connect Jamaicans living on islands like AXA, EIS and SKB, none of which have direct service to KIN, through their SDQ hub, if they wish to properly align these flights. Sky High flies to those islands from SDQ to service the Dominican communities living there.

Europeans arent going to buy a package on TUI and then have to figure out how to get from PUJ to SDQ and then from KIN to the North Coast when they want the tour operator to handle all. They generally spend 2 weeks in the Caribbean. If TUI runs a weekly flight from Europe to PUJ to MBJ and back to Europe, this is how they will fly. They will spend a week on each location. So Arajet isnt relevant to this.

About TUI flying from PUJ to MJB those flights do not have rights to sell tickets between PUJ and MBJ, so If some body would like to spend one week on each destination must find out another way to do it. Actually the TUI flight to SDQ is also stopping in MBJ in the leg to BRU.

With the YJ hub in SDQ they stoped the plan and cancelled the process to register as Dominican Airline.

With Arajet you are right, the conection with KIN is not going to be the beggining list, lets see when will start and with wich city they will planning to connect, such a big airplane will be too much without conections.

So if a triangular trip on one airline isnt possible (i.e someone boarding in Europe, landing in PUJ/SDQ, and then continuing on to MBJ before the final leg to Europe) I do not think that this multi-destination travel will be a thing, except for the most adventurous.

JY was forced off of SDQ routes, other than to PLS and EIS, because Air Century, and Sky High, two Dominican carriers complained that a foreign carrier not be allowed 3rd country routes out of the DR. Sky High promptly announced SDQ KIN service, and I bet that they haven't started it, nor having any intention of doing so in the near term. With another DR airline, Arajet, now taking off I only wonder whether a foreign owned "Dominican" carrier will pass muster whether the existing DR carriers are concerned. They all run on similar routes, and JY competed against them before being barred.

The target market is multi destination, MBJ is the choice.

Both Air Century and Sky High have been running these charters on a frequent basis.

MBJ is the preferred due to the multi destination link.

Yes, they are relevant. DE,EW,WK and TB operate flights into MBJ with it being a tag on destination. Flying widebodies on such route routes will become uneconomical now that fuel prices are expected to soar. Arajet flights will eliminate the need for short hops. An airline would fly into SDQ and transfer pax to Arajet flights heading to MBJ..

It is the next big thing. The major resort destinations have all seen increases since the re-opening of their borders. It is a growing market, hence the destinations putting the proper infrastructure in place to reap the benefits. To reap the benefits, you need to operate a narrowbody aircraft 3-4 times a week linking the destinations.

The next round of flights will see regular services linking MBJ to CUN and HAV. Western Air and Cubana were scheduled to operate flights linking NAS and HAV to MBJ, then Covid hit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A new service targeting the premium market. OCJ was chosen due to it's proximity to the more affluent accommodations. This is the area frequented by celebrities and social media influencers.

Did Arajet say that they plan MBJ service? Mass multi destination will only exist within the context of these tour operators who currently fly Europeans to the Caribbean. So are the tour operators actively promoting these tours, using Arajet to fly PUJ MBJ routes?

Euro carriers are already flying widebodies between the DR and MBJ. They run it as a triangular route. Europe PUJ/SDQ MBJ Europe. If DR and Jamaica are serious about multi destination then they will allow package tourists to fly one way from one island to the other with the intent of splitting a 2 week vacation into one where the visitors spends one week in each.

A big part of travel between the DR and Jamaica is business travel. There isnt much VFR and I doubt that Dominicans and Jamaicans vacation in each other's country to a big extent. I bet that more people are traveling JY with a PLS stop between SDQ and KIN than the very occasional charters that these DR carriers fly.

Indeed, the triangulation between DR and Jamaica is applyed by airlines not only with PUJ also with SDQ with TUI. Would be intresting if tour operators can do multidestination plan. So far Arajet plan is to use SDQ as a Hub, but they said if can see some oportunites in other airports in DR will take actions. They did not mention MBJ only KIN, but who knows plans can change with the time.

We in the English Caribbean need to appreciate the immensity of the DR. There are 1.5x the population in the DR alone as there are in all of the English Caribbean, and I include non CARICOM places like the UK territories, SXM and the USVI. Its economy has also been the fastest growing in the Caribbean, aside from Guyana with its new found oil wealth. Dominicans have also migrated in larger numbers, second behind Haitians, to points within the Caribbean and northern South America. There is therefore ample opportunities for outbound business and personal travel OUT of the DR as well as the VFR.

All of this to say that DR airlines havent even begun to exploit their potential among Dominicans of all segments of the travel market. This is what Arajet will exploit, so I do not see MBJ or battling for low yield work such as subcontracting to Euro tour operators for multi destination work. which is highly seasonal on top of that.

Also Dominicans Airlines all has diferent targets, Arajet is ULC, SkyCana is Charter Airline, SkyHigh and Air Century we could say are like small Legacy airlines and directly they are not going to have direct competition between them.

Sky High and Century compete. If Arajet targets the Dutch Antilles and SJU then they are also competing. The VFR will want to use the cheapest carrier as on those short routes with 50 seat jets its not as if any premium service will be offered.

All this will be revealed once they file their application with JCAA.

Things are at the advanced stage. As the article states, they will create a new level of multi destination tourism. If we are talking about Jamaica, DR and tourism, I assume MBJ( resort airport) will have preference over KIN.
https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/latestn ... _President

Also, the missing element needed to strengthen the concept was Arajet. Having Arajet on the route allows for more flexibility with vacation packages.
1. A person would now be able to split a week's vacation between Jamaica and DR.
2.Spanish owned properties with resorts in both countries have been lobbying for service as their guests will be able to split their vacation in both countries.
. This is one reason The Sandals Group paid a visit to DR seeking properties.

Frontier will operate DEN-MBJ later this year.

This is a second attempt at the route, however this time they have the support of The JTB, Frontier Execs met with the JTB and Travel Agents in KIN last year. Their CEO met with Ed Bartlett recently to discuss airlift. Meeting at this level, tell me F9 is poised for more expansion to Jamaica.

And I repeat. Has Arajet stated that they want t devote assets to run low yield seasonal routes for tour operators like TUI when carriers like TUI already run triangular routes that link DR and Jamaica to Europe? Arajet is a privately owned carrier so not beholden to the developmental imperatives of the gov'ts of Jamaica and DR.

All the tour operators need is permission to take visitors from Europe to one island, pick them up a week later and ferry them to another island, and then a week after that take them back home. The plane is flying any way, so no need to engage a 3rd party provider. Just permission provided by the gov'ts.

ST JAMES, Jamaica— Minister Edmund Bartlett on Thursday welcomed American Airlines' game- changing move to operate two weekly non-stop flights between the Miami International Airport and the Ian Fleming International Airport, outside of Ocho Rios, starting November this year.

The announcement comes following a recent meeting between senior executives of American Airlines and several Government and private sector officials in Montego Bay.

The meeting involved Bartlett, Transport Minister Audley Shaw; Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, Adam Stewart; Director of Tourism Donovan White; Senior Advisor and Strategist Delano Seiveright and Sandals Resorts International Senior Executive, Gary Sadler.

The flights will be operated by an Envoy E-175 aircraft, which can seat between 76 to 88 passengers in business and economy class and operate non-stop between Miami and Ocho Rios on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Also Sandals CEO met with Frontier's CEO.

SANDALS Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart and other company executives, alongside local tourism industry partners, held a series of high-level meetings with international airline partners recently as the global travel industry rebounds and tourism arrivals continue to grow in Jamaica and across the Caribbean.

The meetings strengthened relations with key airline partners to ensure the Caribbean remains top of mind among travellers so as to meet the pent-up demand. To date, separate meetings have been held with representatives from American Airlines Caribbean & LATAM as well as with Frontier Airlines. The meetings focused on tourism resilience, looking beyond the scope of tourism recovery, and what lies ahead for the future of travel.

Interesting! Native Portlanders and Portland bound tourists will welcome this profusely. Avoidance of the "Junction" Rd. from Kingston, or around the coast via Morant Bay or the loooong trek from Mobay. Even if it means longer lines to clear immigration.

Interesting! Native Portlanders and Portland bound tourists will welcome this profusely. Avoidance of the "Junction" Rd. from Kingston, or around the coast via Morant Bay or the loooong trek from Mobay. Even if it means longer lines to clear immigration.

The fares will be high....

The Jamaican Govt has plans to make the Eastern parts of Jamaica into an oasis catering to the more affluent market. Another carrier will kick off in June flying a 30 seater to FLL.

American, Joseph stated during an interview from his offices in Coral Gables, Florida, has built operations in Jamaica by flying from Miami, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dallas, New York and Chicago. “And with all of that additional flying that we’re doing into Montego Bay, our flights are still full. We’re still performing well above our expectations in Jamaica,” he revealed.

American's success is due to the close relationship they have with the Jamaica Tourist Board and Sandal Resorts. Last year they had a meeting and shortly after B787s services started from PHL,MIA and DFW. Based on the aggressive marketing from JTB, this upcoming winter's capacity should exceed the numbers for last year. AUS and OCJ have been announced to date. I expect them to re open LAX year round, now that casinos are coming to Jamaica.

Aerogaviota to increase flights to KIN.

The Cuban aeronautics did not wait for the following month, to face the demand, increase its flights through the national company Aerogaviota, to Jamaica, from Havana, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba.

The “José Martí” International Airport in the Cuban capital has just surprised with more connections to this country, which can serve as a link to Nicaragua. So did the Santiago terminal with more connections.

As we have already announced in these pages, Jamaica does not request a transit visa from Cuban travelers if they are going to be in its airports for less than 72 hours. Due to these facilities, the demand for flights to Jamaica has increased considerably in recent days and Cuba has acted.

According to information from this April 20 from the Havana terminal, so far Aerogaviota will continue to operate with the following frequencies during the current month. José Martí International Airport (Havana). Monday, Thursday and Friday to Kingston, capital of Jamaica.

At the beginning of the month, the Cuban airport company known as ECASA had indicated that Aerogaviota would fly to Jamaica every Thursday from the “Ignacio Agramonte” Airport in Camagüey.

Now he will also do it from the “Antonio Maceo” of Santiago de Cuba, every Thursday. This announced increase in flights from this week would leave said national company doing five weekly routes to Jamaica.

Rapid expansion in the Jamaican market indeed by F9. I guess we will eventually see seasonal CLE-MBJ as well sooner than later.

Not surprised that AA started the DFW-MBJ route. But even with the west coast connections I never imagined them operating daily A321s & up to recently the B787s on this sector. Really impressive.

As usual AC has a stronghold on the KIN-YYZ route. I wasn't even aware that they also offer first checked bag free.

They're not playing at all on the KIN-FLL sector. I'm sure they'll easily fill those flights considering many who wanted to travel last year & couldn't due to the pandemic are doing so this year.

KIN has seen an increase in flights to MGA. To date I gave seen flights operated by Air Century and Sky High. Last week, Sky Cana flew their A321 between KIN and MGA on behalf of Air Century.
Inter-Caribbean has increased KIN-SCU to 6 weekly.

The Embassy Jamaica In Havana, she announced that she would present more Tourist visas For Cubans, as well as permits to make Crossing to other countries Without the need for a 72-hour visa, given the increased travel requests from residents on the island.

Emirates to sell Jamaica flights.

The decision for Emirates to begin to sell flights came out of two meetings held this morning.

Bartlett and White also met with Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the Emirates Group, to formalise the decision.

Emirates is the largest airline in the Gulf Coast Countries (GCC).

The flights are being sold for Kingston and Montego Bay and offer connections with New York, Newark, Boston and Orlando.

There is also an option to travel through Malpensa, Italy, which will boost Jamaica's access to the European market.

BDL is offering USD 2 million incentives towards flights to Jamaica.

They have been lobbying for the past few years.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development is receiving up to $2 million to support the establishment of direct flights to Jamaica. A spokesman for DECD said the money can be used to incentivize an airline to develop a route between Connecticut and the island but cautioned that it’s still too early to say how the funding will be spent.

Flight data from the Bradley service area, defined as a 60-minute driving radius around the airport, shows that on average 150 passengers per day back and forth between Jamaica — and that’s before any additional level of stimulation,” Dillon said.

There is a large Jamaican population in the Hartford metro area and along I-91 from Springfield, MA to New Haven. Back in the late 90's Air Jamaica was set to serve BDL but service never happened. I could see at 3-4x weekly service from BDL being successful.

BW also looked at this route when they first acquired JM.

This market is mainly middle class. The perfect opportunity for BW . They could operate the route as KIN-MBJ-BDL-MBJ-KIN.MBJ would cater to the VFR/Vacation market, while KIN is business/VFR.
In terms of movement, the majority is heading to KIN. They detest having to drive to BOS/JFK and then endure another 3-4 hours driving across the island. This is one reason they are throwing so much cash to get the route started.

No doubt with a longer runway, they could attract more long haul flights to Europe. I'm sure the runway now limits it in some way.

JY cannot do SDQ KIN. They were driven off by the Dominican carriers as they arent a Dominican carrier. Sunrise has some Dominican connections.

As to whether these Dominican carriers are serious about SCHEDULED service. Well we will see. Their focus seems to be on charters and irregular routes which fly to (but not from) Managua. Maybe KIN is a transit point for Cubans attempting to bypass the infamous Darien Gap in Panama by starting their US trek in Nicaragua instead.

Looking at the JCAA link, as per the report the number of aircraft movements of jan-mar 2022 vs the previous year(s) it has decreased whereas the numbers show it has increased (NMIA 5971 in 2022 vs 3952 in 2021 but still claiming a decline of 51%. The same goes for SIA with 9834 movements in 2022 and 5903 in 2020 and still claiming a decline of 67%. They also compare those number with another year (2020 instead of 2021) which is also strange).

The page with the Passenger Arrival by Region info also is confusing. It states that total passenger arrivals between 2022 and 2021 has a remarkable increase of 1% while this should be an increase of 191% based on the passenger numbers given on that page(?)

What am I missing here?

TUI to expand Jamaica flights for S23

Currently, TUI operates 10 flights out of Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham in the United Kingdom. These flights support both cruise and land stop over arrivals.
The plan is to have up to 8 flights dedicated to stop over arrivals by summer 2023.

“Each flight carries roughly 340 passengers which means about 3000 passengers weekly who spend 11 to 12 nights in the destination. This is a very positive step as we work towards full recovery from the fallout of the pandemic,’ said Director of Tourism, Jamaica, Donovan White.

Those loads are atrocious. I can see why it was axed. That is surprising though. There is a decent sized Jamaican diaspora in PHL and they could’ve also gotten connections from other northeastern cities. I wonder why it wasn’t a more popular flight.

I had high expectations for this flight based on the size of the diaspora. This is a case of bad timings .
However, rest assured F9 will be on that route soon. Notice the addition of ATL- KIN.

Those are very horrible loads indeed. I wasn't aware that it was so bad! I always wondered why they chose to use the A321N instead of the A319 (even though that would still probably not be sufficient to keep the route operational based on those stats). To be honest I had my doubts from day 1 when AA launched PHL-KIN, so it wasn't a surprise to me when it was dropped. It reminds me of when CO started EWR-MBJ & EWR-KIN back in the late 80s/early 90s. As much as there is a decent Jamaican population in the NJ area, they just could not make KIN work and it was dropped in no time leaving EWR-MBJ which of course is now operated by UA. Let's see if F9 will make a go at PHL-KIN in the future.

Very disappointing to see BA drop LGW-MBJ yet again. If they can't get MBJ to work for them during summer or winter, 2 of the busiest travel periods of the year at 2x weekly, especially with the influx of passengers travelling now that weren't able to do so over the past 2 years due Covid, then I don't know which other time of the year they could get the route to work. British Airways still makes LGW-KIN work three times a week. Despite KIN not being a resort destination (I would assume most of the tourist resort demand goes to MBJ) BA has sustained service to the city for many years now. Plus KIN has no flights to Europe outside of LGW. The KIN-Europe market doesn't seem to be as big as MBJ. Just the demand between the UK and Jamaica is enough to sustain LGW-KIN service.

Virgin Atlantic served LGW-KIN but cut the route. I guess two carriers on one route seems to be overcapacity. BA flops MBJ and VS flops KIN.

The service is scheduled to launch on December 15, 2022, and will operate year-round, four times weekly. This is the first time that a nonstop flight to Jamaica is being offered by any airline that services Bradley International Airport.

Connecticut is home to one of the largest Jamaican communities in the world, boasting the fifth largest population of residents with Jamaican ancestry among all U.S. states. According to census data, there are more than 56,000 residents with Jamaican ancestry in Connecticut.

“Connecticut has a significant population of residents with Jamaican ancestry, and I am proud to announce that this long-awaited nonstop service is being added at Bradley,” Governor Lamont said. “Today’s announcement with Spirit Airlines not only makes it easier for our state’s residents to directly travel to Jamaica, but it also strengthens Bradley’s reputation as one of the best and m
