TG flew JFK-BKK nonstop starting in 2005 and I think axed the route in 2008. It used the A340-500 and the journey time was 17 hours on the JFK-BKK sector. High fuel prices and the Great Recession, combined with an uneconomical plane and a route that was more leisure focused, ended the opportunity. At the time of the JFK launch, Thai was also flying 3 weekly LAX-BKK.

The market is big but the fares between the US and BKK are pure garbage. The yields are terrible.

CrewBunk wrote:Looking at loads over the next couple of weeks, it must be a yield issue, as it certainly isn’t an issue getting people on the YYC-YYJ flights. It’s not surprising therefore, that with Jazz having a hard time finding pilots, the lowest yielding flights are being cut.
The Alberta market, being overrun with ULCCs, it’s probably best to let them battle it out among themselves. Tough break for Westjet, it being their new focus.

Yes, they could take equipment off of more profitable routes …. but why? (Btw, there’s a pilot shortage at AC too).
Go to statista.com. Search on “Air Transportation in Canada - statistics and facts”. There’s your answer right on page one. City with the lowest average domestic airfare? Calgary.
Sucks to be Westjet. A lot of eggs in one low yielding basket.
Polot wrote:Of course the fact that Westjet has a large presence (in terms of overall % of traffic) in Calgary might be one of the reasons why the city has the lowest average domestic airfare…
Funny enough cities (worldwide) with heavy (U)LCC presence have a tendency to have lower average fares then those dominated by legacy carriers

I can think of many reasons why Calgary (and Alberta in general) may have lower average airfares, but it doesn’t change the fact that fares ARE lower. So ….. when resources are tight, why chase after a losing market? (That would only get worse with more competition).
I have always held Westjet’s marketing with high esteem. One of the biggest facets is that the majority of travellers think Westjet is cheaper than Air Canada. A simple search shows that is not the case. So I wouldn’t put Westjet’s presence in Calgary as a reason why fares are low. Now …. Flair, Swoop and Lynx, different story.
Polot wrote:If it’s the latter reason than an airline like AC giving up and deciding not to chase the market anymore is good for WS and their basket of eggs, and makes criticism of WS to focus their odd if they are the victor.
CrewBunk wrote:
Yes, the victor of the lowest fares in Canada. AC is not leaving any of these cities, just removing some of the flights between them. Rest assured, if fares start to rise, AC will start connecting the dots again. One thing we have learned, the average Canadian traveller holds little loyalty.

yes I know, I was hoping for a nice neat package where I could see it all in one place rather than accessing employee travel and doing it one by one.

This shows nothing of the sorts... however, not being able to book any of those routes mentioned says all that needs to be said.

Their route map on that portal is pretty outdated, still showing all the regional routes like YYZ-YGK/YZR and YYC-YXC/YQL/YXH that were cut a couple years back.
otherwise I tend to find that timetables created by airlines are becoming pretty inaccurate nowadays since some of these flights are being dropped with very little notice.

I fail to see how they will be able to operate YEG-SFO which is still bookable. Where will the aircraft reposition from? YVR???

2 of AC's daily YVR-YEG will be on the CR9, so I'd assume the frame would come from YVR? Similarly out of the 4x daily YYC-YWG 2 are on the CR9, and YYC-YVR will have one CR9 flight.

Well YWG is linked via YOW and YUL not a big deal. I guess YEG-SFO will operate as long as there's a link to YVR. The moment there isn't... that's it for that as well.

I believe YEG-YZF is operated with a CR9.

Currently showing a June 17 return in the timetable, and the timetable appears to have the most recent round of cuts. There's probably more cuts to come but as of now it's still a go, at least seasonally.
